4. Legionella ACoP L8 risk assessment
A Legionella risk assessment lies at
the centre of compliance with water
management.
The HSE’s ACoP L8 requires that a
Legionella risk assessment is completed
for every building that is covered by
the requirements of HASAWA 1974. This
document should be reviewed or updated
regularly. Stored water, drinking water,
process water, closed systems and cooling
towers are all covered within the ACoP L8.
To safely manage your water quality it is
therefore vital that your water systems
are properly assessed for their water
quality risk.
Our experienced staff have a high level of
knowledge and skill in identifying
Legionella hazards and the people
potentially at risk. We will issue a full
comprehensive report, allowing you to
take the necessary steps to protect against
Legionella at your premises, ensuring
safety and compliance with the more
complex areas of legislation.
You’re in safe hands
As a business, under general health and
safety law you must consider the risks
from Legionella that may affect your
employees or members of the public and
take suitable precautions.
By law an employer, or a person in
control of the premises (for example,
a landlord), must:
• Identify and assess sources of risk
• Prepare a scheme (or course of action)
for preventing or controlling the risk
• Implement and manage the scheme –
appointing a person to be managerially
responsible
• Keep records and check that what has
been done is effective
• If appropriate, notify the local authority
that you have a cooling tower(s) on site.*

5. Awareness training
Interserve believes that education and
development of staff should be at the
forefront of all businesses. We pride
ourselves on the proactive approach and
dynamic delivery style we use to support
our clients.
We can deliver Legionella training in
a variety of methods, including online
interactive e-learning, classroom
training and via a training academy.
Our approach is simple and delivered
in an enjoyable manner.
Online Legionella awareness
We can deliver a popular e-learning course
for all of your employees. Our quality
assured and interactive course provides
users with greater flexibility as staff can
work in their own time and pace - your
business will benefit from the reduction in
time large groups of your employees are
not performing their usual roles. You can
easily track completion of the training and
certification of your staff and the system
also provides a free refresher 12 months
after the original course was completed.
Classroom training
We can also deliver bespoke on-site
Legionella awareness classroom training.
It may be your employees already have
some knowledge that needs to be tested
by experts or that you need to show the
responsible people within your organisation
are fully competent to manage the risks.
This training can be delivered under
our City and Guilds registration as an
Accredited Training Centre if required.
Training academy
We have created a dedicated training
academy that combines a fully fitted
training area for groups up to 12 alongside
a practical area that allows the trainer to
demonstrate and the trainees to practise.
This is an invaluable tool when presenting
complicated installation and maintenance
tasks, and is not available from any other
water treatment company.
Ensuring your people
have the tools to
effectively mitigate
the risk of Legionella
6. Control scheme management
Legionella monitoring
An integral part of the ACoP L8
requirement is the need for a business to
undertake regular monitoring and checks
on its water systems to ensure everything is
operating within the guideline parameters.
On the issue of the 4th edition of ACoP
L8, the majority of the guidance for
controlling and monitoring water systems
was separated into a HSE issued document
entitled HSG 274. This document is
published in 3 parts covering evaporative
cooling systems, hot and cold water
systems and other risk systems.
Our water consultants can provide you with
a reliable and cost effective water system
management service, a service that will
ensure your water systems remain free
from proliferation by Legionella Bacteria.
Our service includes regular analysis and
reporting of water systems along with
recommendations for any treatments that
are needed. Our comprehensive water
quality maintenance system will provide
your business with a quality service fully
supported by Interserve, one of the largest
and most trusted water service companies
in the UK.
Ongoing monitoring:
• Temperature checks
• ClO2
(aq) checks

All of the water hygiene services
we offer are designed to keep
you fully compliant with current
legislation and guidelines and

7. Once the risk assessment has been
completed, our qualified water experts
will make recommendations for any
modifications and renovations needed
to the water services, which may be
necessary in order to ensure regulatory
compliance with the current legislation.
We offer a comprehensive range of
remedial services and water safety
solutions, which include tank lining, tank
