This document outlines a protocol for conducting multiple studies using databases from 5 European countries to analyze the association between inhaled long-acting beta agonists (LABA) use and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The protocol describes using a cohort study design, nested case-control study design, and case-crossover study design. It details how population characteristics, database features, and study design may impact the association found. Guidelines are provided for identifying study populations, measuring exposure to LABA drugs, identifying AMI cases, and selecting matched controls while accounting for limitations and potential confounding factors.
