. In this presentation we are going to show you how you can use the Eatwell Plate to
help pupils understand about healthier eating.
 What is the eatwllplate ?
The eatwell plate is a great way to explain healthier eating, especially to children
and young people. It is clear, simple and can be used with anyone, of any age from
any background.
The plate is designed to cover a five day period. What it shows is the overall balance
of foods that we should try to eat over five days. It does not imply that we should be
trying to eat something from all of the different food groups at every meal.
So what are the different food groups?

All of the foods that we eat will fall into one or more of these categories.
Bread, Rice, Potatoes, Pasta and Other Starchy Foods. (Can we embolden these or
highlight these as they are read out?)
Fruits and vegetables
Milk and Dairy Foods
Meat, Fish, Eggs Beans and Other non dairy sources of protein
Foods and drinks that are high in fat, and, or sugar
Let's take a look at each of these different food groups in detail
Fruit and vegetables play a really important function in helping to keep us healthy
and well. Not only are they high in essential vitamins and minerals, which may help
to prevent certain diseases, but they are mostly very low in fat, which helps us to
maintain a healthy weight.
We should try to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day
Bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchfoods provide us with energy and
contain many important vitamins and minerals. Wholemeal versions are good
sources of fibre and help to provide energy over a sustained periodMost of our
meals should be based on this food group.

This food group includes, milk, cheese and yogurt. This food group is high in calcium
and vitamins, A D and E.. which are needed to keep teeth and bones strong and
healthy. It is really important that children get enough calcium when they are
growing up in order for their bones to develop properly.However, some of these
foods are very high in fat so most of us, except for children under 5, should try to
choose the low fat versions of these foods.
Meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non dairy sources of protein help our bodies
to develop properly. It is essential for growth and repair of the body and helps to
provide us with energy
Foods in this group contain many essential vitamins and nutrients, for example,
vitamin B12, iron,It is recommended that we eat two portions of oily fish a week
depending on our age and gender. Boys will need to eat more than girls. Oily fish
such as mackerel, sardines, salmon and tuna contain omega 3, which helps maintain
our brain function.
there is room for all foods on the Eatwell plate and we all like to eat foods from this
group once in a while. However, food and drinks in this group are often high in
calories and low in nutrients. Our bodies get the fats and nutrients that we need to
keep us healthy from the other food groups. We should try to eat foods from this
group only occasionally as eating too much of this group can lead to poor dental
health and increased weight.

The Eatwell plate helps to demonstrate to pupils that no food is completely healthy
or unhealthy. If we eat only fruit and vegetables our bodies will not develop
properly. Similarly, it's fine to eat foods from the purple group occasionally as long
as we only do this once or twice a day. The key message here is about getting a good
balance of foods.
We should never cut out one of these food groups completely unless there is a
genuine medical reason, for example lactose intolerance.
