Objectives: At the end of this chapter, the students

 Know the area and location of CAR
 Know the geographical characteristics of the province
of CAR
 Know the different tourist destinations, gastronomic
features, geographic profile of each provinces in the
Cordillera Administrative Region.
GEOGRAPHY
•Cordillera -a name given
by the Spanish Conquistadors
when they first saw the
mountain ranges.
• Meaning “knotted rope” the
Spanish term refers to the
jumbled rolls and dips of this
long-range traversing the
Northern part of Luzon.
• The region has an area of
18,294 sq km.
• The Cordillera is predominantly
mountainous, with towering
peaks, plateaus, and valleys.
• The climate is dry from
November to April and rainy
for the rest of the year.

The monument was built
to commemorate
Gabriela Silang, who led
the Ilocano resistance
against the Spaniards in
1763.
Kimkimay Lake
Taquib Villaviciosa
Legend says that beneath
this lake lies a village that
was sunk by the Gods as
punishment for its
inhabitants. The lake is a
favorite among picknickers
and is ideal for swimming
and fishing.
Libtec Underground River
Libtec,Dolires
Believed to be inhabited by
mysterious water creatures,
this river is located inside a
cave surrounded by
extruding stalagmites,
making it both beautiful and
creepy.

government, the capital
is situated in a cool
atmosphere surrounded
by trees.

This 40 meter tunnel
along the Abra-Ilocos Sur
National Road is a
popular landmark
welcoming the province’s
visitors.
Claimed to be the real
footprints of the
legendary giant Angalo,
who is the “Adam” in
Abra mythodology. It is a
15 meters long, 5m wide
and 10 feet deep.

APAYAO
• Capital: Cabugao
• The province has a total land area of
4,351 sq km.
• It is composed of 7 municipalities
and 133 barangays
• Language Spoken: Isneg, Ilocano
and Tagalog
•Dubbed as
“Cordilleras Last Frontier for Nature
Richness”

• Sinursur - a native course cooked in a young
bamboo shoot.
• Pinikpikan - a soup dish which consists of
burned chicken mixed with etag.
• Zinagan - their version of dinugoan
• Sagket - native’s bagoong, made from fish
called Palilang.
GASTRONOMY
This is a delaminated
forestland straddling the
Ilocos Norte-Apayao
boundary. It is a natural site
with no tourist facilities but
is ideal for hiking, camping,
nature tripping and bird
watching.

Highly regarded by the
locals as unpolluted and
pristine, the peace river
traverses six Apayao
municipalitues and can
be navigated by
motorboat.

The highest peak in
Apayao, it offers lush
greenery and scenetic
sights along its slopes. t is
a good site for camping,
nature tripping and
mountaineering.

Spanish missionaries
reached Apayao Province
and built two churches in
the municipality of Pudtol.
These were abandoned due
to tribal wars and conflict in
beliefs.
Containing several chambers, Lussok
cave showcases nature at its best. It
has a wide opening, reminiscent of a
cathedral’s dome.
To get inside the cave, one needs to
ride a boat.
Once inside, you’ll catch sight of
stunning stalactite and stalagmite
rock formations.

Gololan Falls
Kabugao
Gololan falls cascades for
more than 33 meters. On
sunny days, it projects a
small rainbow.
The falls’ waters carved a
deep and wide pool. This is
a perfect spot for
swimming. The surrounding
boulders provide an ideal
spot for jumping or diving
Maton River is now creating
a fuss among the tourist
spots in Apayao.
The river is fit for swimming
and boating.
There are numerous rock
formations in the area.
These are ideal spots for
jumping.

Considered as the biggest
waterfall within the
municipality, Girgira falls
measures around 30 feet
high.
Because of its huge water
volume, the falls carved a
pool that is twice as big as
an Olympic size swimming
pool.

Dupag Rock Formation is a
cluster of jagged limestone
boulders that measure
around 7 to 8 feet high.
The highest peak is known
as Father Rock. It provides
an entrancing view of the
surrounding fields, valleys,
forests, and rivers.

WELCOME TO BENGUET PROVINCE
BENGUET
• Capital: La Trinidad
• The total land area of the
province is 2,826.59 sq km.
• The province is composed of 1
city, 13 municipalities and 140
barangays
• Languages: Ibaloy, Kankana-ey,
Ilocano, Tagalog and English
• During the American Period, first Civil Government was established in
Benguet on November 23, 1900 under Act 49 with H.P. Whitmarsh, a
journalist by profes- sion, appointed as Civil Governor. The rancherias
under the Distrito de Benguet were termed town ships. Baguio was
named the capital of Benguet. On September 1, 1909, Benguets
capital town, Baguio was established as a chartered city and its stead,
the township of Tuba, was created. Baguio remained the capital of
Benguet until 1916.
• After 1916, La Trinidad became the capital of Benguet.

Catholic Cathedral, located
on top of a hill in the heart
of the city is one of the
more familliar and most
visited landmarks in Baguio.
• One of the most
photographed landmarks in
the city.

planner Daniel Burnham.
• It has a man-made lagoon that is
usually filled with boating
excurtionists, bikers, and skaters
delight in the park’s wide area.

• One of the most popular and most
visited parks in the city.
• Known as a shopper’s haven, where
you can buy the provinces bounties:
handwoven jackets and blankets,
silver knick knacks and jewelry,
various jams and preserves.
• The observation deck of the park
offer’s a breathtaking panoramic
view on the mining sites.
• Originally a recreational camp
for American soldiers.
• It has become a popular
destination for people who wish
to see the pine forest in the city.
• It also boasts of a sprawling
country club with a full 18-hole
golf course, Restaurants and
shopping centers.

This old mine ceased operation
when the minerals in the area
were depleted. The site is still
complete with the still-
functioning equipment, and was
transformed into a tourist
destination that offers visitors a
chance to go deep inside the
mine tunnels.

• Mt. Pulag is the highest
mountain in Luzon. Reaching
more than 9,600 feet one can
literally walk beyond the clouds.
• The interesting features of the
mountain are the lake, the
mossy forestsat the middle
elevation, and the wide
grassland made of dwarf
bamboos at the peak area.

• The main focus of this particular
museum is a collection of Ibaloi
arcrafts, including well-peserved
mummies, which unlike the
mummies in Egypt that are
wrapped in gauze and are laid
out in a straight position, are
dressed only in their traditional
clothing and are in sitting /
squatting position.

• The Philippine Military Academy
is the premier training for young
Filipinos who want to excel in a
military career.
• Aside from its interesting
military oriented structures, it
also houses important relics
such as cultural artifacts of the
Cordilleras.

• Tekip Falls is one of the
countless waterfalls found in
Bakun. Measuring more than
120 feet high, it cascades like a
giant curtain of water. It has
small and shallow pools with icy-
cold waters.

• The landscape of barangay
Tacadang, Kibungan resembles
the Grand Canyon of United
States. Sheer and bare rock cliffs
and formations dominate its
entire landscape.
• That is why it is also popularly
known as the “Switzerland of
Benguet.”

WELCOME TO IFUGAO PROVINCE
• Capital: Lagawe
• The province has a total land
area of 251,778 hectares.
• Ifugao is a landlocked area
located at the foot of the
Cordillera Mountain Range.
• Political Profile: Ifugao is divided
into 11 municipalities and 175
barangays.

• Banaue is one of famous well-
known areas in the Philippines
primarily because of the
numerous rice terraces that
were carved on the mountain
slopes by the Igorots 3,000 years
ago.

• This village, which seems to be
located inside the huge bowl,
offers a panoramic view of the
rice terraces.

• This is another good place
from which to view the rice
terraces, which here are
formed like seats in the
amphitheater.

• A hill named during World War II
when Allied armies spent
millions of dollars worth of
bombs and ammunition to
annihilate the enemies in the
area.

• Rising 2,700 meters above sea
level. Mt Amuyao is the 8th
highest peak in the Philippines.
• Its summit provides a
breathtaking panorama of
Mountain Province, Isabela,
Nueva Ecija, and Ifugao.

• Considered as the best camping
site in the province is peak

the Hungduan municipality.

forest and its rare flora is a deal

WELCOME TO KALINGA PROVINCE
• Capital: Tabuk
• The province has a total land
area of 3,120 sq. km.
• Kalinga is divided into 7
municipalities, 1 component
city and 152 barangays

• This area was delared a national
park on June 17, 1972 by R.A.
6543.
• The park which is located near
the boundary of Abra is
transversed with numerous
rivers.

• Constructed by the National
Irrigation Administration. It is
supposed to be one of the
largest in Asia.

• This is the center of ethnic
weaving industry in the
province. One can see how
ethnic designs are made and
how the colors are mixed.
• The village is along the road and
one can buy souvenirs right from
the weavers.

• Mt Binaratan is locally known as the
“Silent Mountain.” That is because when
you are on top, you cannot hear birds sing
or chirp even though you can see them
hovering across.
• According to local folklore, when
Kabunian (Igorot name for God)
descended on the mountain to hunt, He
was disturbed by the continuous chirping
of birds. That is why He cannot locate His
dog. For that, Kabunian ordered the birds
to keep silent.

• This mountain range which
separates the two municipalities
of Tinglayan and Tanudan is said
to be shaped like woman’s body
stretched out facing the sky.

National Highway road where
one can also get a sprawling
view of the different barangays
of Tinglayan.

• Capital: Bontoc
• The province has a total land
area of 2,096 sq. km.
• It is composed of 10
municipalities and 144
barangays.

This calendar is made of two
huge rocks situated side by
side leaving a crevice at the
middle where the rays of the
sun pass through only once a
year. This event heralds the
start of planting season and
is celebrated by the local
folk.

A huge rock with bows
and arrows and human
beings etched on its
surface. The etching of
human beings is believed
to be images of warriors
burried in the Ganga Cave
at the foot of the
mountain where the rock
stands.

majestically amidst the
rolling plains, making it one
of the popular tourist spots
in Tadian, Mountain
Province. It is a visible
landmark in almost every
barangay.

This museum houses various
ancient artifacts and other
indigenous items.
Hanging Coffins

The people of Sagada have a
unique tradition. Instead of
burrying their departed
family members their coffins
which are usually made of
pine trunks are hung in cliff
sides.

A big cave where piles of
coffins of the town ancestors
are kept.
Mabalot Oil Lake
Paracelis
A magnificent lake whose
waters shimmer, especially
on starry nights. The
shimmering effect is believed
to be caused by a pool of oil
coming out of the lake itself.

One of the outstanding
natural attractions in Bontoc,
renowned for its warm
waters.
Sumaging Cave
Sagada
Sumaging or Big cave, is a
major tourist attraction in
the area. It is a large cave
system that one can explore
with the aid of local guides.
Cold water flows in many
parts of the cave so one
should expect to get wet
during the adventure.
Traditional Ato (Dap-

The rooms not only serve as
a sleeping quarters for the
folks and the male teenagers
but also as a venue for
traditional rites and village
cultural affairs.
