ISO 50001:2018 Standard Overview
Copyrights 2018 @ I Global Manager Group | sales@globalmanagergroup.com | 6GMG
In ISO 50001:2018, a common term “Documented information” has been used. This
term is used for all types of documents and all document and records requirements.
1. ISO 50001:2011 used specific terminologies, such as “document” or “documented
procedures”, “energy manual” or “energy management plan”. All these terms have been
changed in ISO 50001:2018 to only one term, “maintain documented information”.
2. ISO 50001:2011 used the term “records” to denote the documents needed to provide
evidence of conformity with requirements. In ISO 50001:2018 it has been changed to
“retain documented information”.
Thus, based on identified risk and action decided and other planned activity(ies) the
organization needs to decide a requirement to “maintain” documented information. It
does not exclude the possibility that the organization might also need to “retain” that
same documented information for a particular purpose for the revised standard.
In ISO 50001:2018, documentation requirements are reduced, and it is required only at
few places. In this revised standard, energy manual and procedures and energy plan,
etc., are not specified as mandatory requirements; but as a good practice companies
use to make energy manual with energy policy and objectives at macro level to describe
how other requirements are complied.

to be earned by real hard labor and total transformation at all levels in the
organization. Requirements for installing an energy management system are :
 Customer focus (external and internal)
 Utilization of intellect of workers and
supervisors
 Reduced supervision and promotion
of self-inspection
 Planned continuous improvement
 Environment of trust and team work
 Promoting use of risk-based thinking
to determine risk and opportunities
and plan actions
 Institutionalized audit.
