What is Social problems?
 A social problem is any condition or behaviour that has negative consequences
for large numbers of people and that is generally recognised as a condition or
behaviour that needs to be addressed.
 Social condition or pattern of behavior that harms some individuals or all
people in a societyRaises public concern and collective action to bring
about change.
 Some social problems are viewed as conditions that affect all members
of society, while others are viewed as conditions that affect only some
members of society
Causes of social problems
 Just as people disagree on how to solve social issues,
many also disagree on the causes of social issues
 Typically, social problems are very complex. Social
science can't always pinpoint one root cause, making it
difficult to create a solution.
 Societies don't always agree on the causes of social
issues. Without agreement on the causes, it's difficult to
find a solution to these very complex situations
• However, social science researchers have found common
causes that seem to contribute to common social problems:
Overpopulation
Economic inequality and poverty
Illiteracy and lack of education
Gender inequality
High unemployment rates
Superstitious beliefs
Types of Social Problems
 Social stratification: Social stratification is the differentiation of the members of society based
on their occupation and income, wealth and social status, or social and political power.
 Economic issues:Unemployment rates vary by region, gender, educational attainment, and
ethnic group. In most countries (including developed countries), many people are poor and
depend on welfare.War also plays an important role in disturbing the economic status of a
country by using money that was intended for welfare.
 Social disorganization: So-called "problem neighborhoods" exist in many countries. These
neighborhoods tend to have a high drop-out rate from secondary school, and children growing
up in these neighborhoods have a low probability of going to college compared to children who
grow up in other neighborhoods. Abuse of alcohol and drugs is common in these
neighborhoods. Often these neighborhoods were founded out of best intentions.
 Public health:Widespread health conditions (often characterized as epidemics or pandemics)
are of concern to society as a whole. They can harm the quality of life, and the ability of people to
contribute to society (e.g. by working), and can result in death.
Types of social problems
 Age discrimination: Throughout the life course, there are
social problems associated with different ages. One such
social problem is age discrimination. People often do not allow
old people into high ranking position within their respective
jobs because of their age , despite them having crucial
experience and ample knowledge collected over many years
of labour in the same field or another field with the same
requirements as the current one.
 Social inequality: Social inequality is "the state or quality of
being unequal".Inequality is the root of several social
problems that occur when factors such as gender, disability,
race, and age may affect the way a person is treated.
Coping up with Social Problems
There are no end solutions for social problems but we
can help ourselves unto some extent by practising
these things:
 1.Focus on the outliers
 2.Set measurable goals with a scary deadline
 3.Focus on the obvious thing
 4.Build the broadest team possible
