INDIA : SIZE & LOCATION
PRESENTED BY GEOGRAPHY TEACHER
RAXIT GUPTA 9C CHAPTER 1 DK PANDIT SIR
Location of India
 We know that to locate a country / place , we needs its longitude
and latitude . This system of longitude and latitude is also known
as cartesian system.
 The longitude of India is 68°7’E to 97°25’E
 The latitude of India is 8°4’N to 37°6’N
 It lies on the north of equator (in northern hemisphere)
 It is at the head of Indian Ocean. Its longest coastline on Indian
Ocean makes a Ocean named after it.
 Is is almost equally divided by the tropic of cancer ( 23½°N).
 India has 2 islands ,lakshadweep and andaman and Nicobar
islands in Arabian sea and Bay OF Bengal respectively
 LOCATION: Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay
of Bengal, between Burma and Pakistan
SIZE OF INDIA
 The total area of India is 3.28 million square kilometers (32,87,263 km ²)
 India is the seventh largest countryof the world which shares 2.4 % of the total land geographical
area of the world
 Its land boundary is of 15,200 km and the total length of the coastline including lakshadweep and
andaman and Nicobar islandes is 7,516.6 km.
 India is bounded by the young fold of mountains in the northwest, northand northeast. South is about
22° N , it begins from taper and extend towards Indian Oceandividing it into 2 seas, Arabian sea and
the Bay of Bengal.
 The north –south extent of India is 3214km and east-west extent is 2933 km. Both longitudinal and
latitudnal extent is of about 30° but as Indian is in the north of equator ,the distance between1° of a
longitude decreases causing small longitudinal extent.
 total: 3,287,263 sqkm

STANDARD MERIDIAN
 Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich near London, divided earth in two eastern and
western hemisphere. Its value is 0°.
 Indian Standard time is calculated on …………………………….. …
the basis of 82°30’E longitude which _______________________
Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) and is _____________________________________________________
applicable for full country.
 IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT.
 It means when there is noon in London, _______________________£££££££££££££££££££££££££
the Indian clock shows 5:30 PM.
 It is the 11th meridian. And is calculated ______________________________________________________
as 7.5×11=82.5(82°30’E).
 82.5×4*=330 now, 330÷(4×7.5)=5.5
*=It is formula to find timing ahead of GMT. (first ×4 then ÷60 give the time ahead of GMT)
INDIA AND THE WORLD
 The Indian landmasshasa central location
between east and west Asia. India isa
southward extension of the Great Asian
Continent.
 The trans Indian Ocean route ,connectsthe
Europe in the west and the countries of East
Asia which provides a strategic central location
to India
 As the deccan peninsula protrudes into the
Indian Ocean, helping Indiato establish close
contact with West asia, Africa, Europe with the
western coast and the southeast and east asia
from the eastern coast.
 By opening of Suez canal in 1869 reduced the
distanceof Indian to Europe by 7000
kilometers.
• Indian relationship with the world through land routes are much older than it maritime contact. Various passes through mountains were ideal
for travelers while the ocean restricts this interaction in that time. These routes were useful for exchanging ideas with theworld like
upanishads,Ramayana and stories of punchtantra, Indian number system, decimal system etc. Spices ,Muslins and other merchantiles are
taken through India . On the other hand, Greek sculptures, architectural styles of dome and minarets of West asia can be seen in India today
also.
India and its neighboring countries
 India Shares its boundary with Pakistan and Afghanistan in
west. Pakistan was a part of India before 1947.
 China (Tibet) , Nepal and Bhutan in north.
 Myanmar and Bangladesh in east.
 Sri Lanka and Maldives are island countries in Indian ocean
as India’s neighbour in south.
 Sri Lanka is separated by Indian by a narrow channel of sea
formed by Palk strait and Gulf of Mannar. Before 1947 ,Sri
Lanka was “ceylon “.SriLanka also face colonial rule like
India. Sri Lanka was different from India but British also
control it from India and treat as a part of India.
 The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
(SAARC) is an economic and political organization of
eight countries inSouth Asia. It was established in 1985
when the Heads of State of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India,
Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka formally adopted
the charter.

This system of longitude and latitude is also known as cartesian system.  The longitude of India is 68°7’E to 97°25’E  The latitude of India is 8°4’N to 37°6’N  It lies on the north of equator (in northern hemisphere)  It is at the head of Indian Ocean. Its longest coastline on Indian Ocean makes a Ocean named after it.  Is is almost equally divided by the tropic of cancer ( 23½°N).  India has 2 islands ,lakshadweep and andaman and Nicobar islands in Arabian sea and Bay OF Bengal respectively  LOCATION: Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and Pakistan

South is about 22° N , it begins from taper and extend towards Indian Oceandividing it into 2 seas, Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal.  The north –south extent of India is 3214km and east-west extent is 2933 km. Both longitudinal and latitudnal extent is of about 30° but as Indian is in the north of equator ,the distance between1° of a longitude decreases causing small longitudinal extent.  total: 3,287,263 sqkm land: 2,973,193sq km water: 314,070sq km  Comparitive: slightly more than one-third the size of the US

Its value is 0°.  Indian Standard time is calculated on …………………………….. … the basis of 82°30’E longitude which _______________________ Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) and is _____________________________________________________ applicable for full country.  IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT.  It means when there is noon in London, _______________________£££££££££££££££££££££££££ the Indian clock shows 5:30 PM.  It is the 11th meridian. And is calculated ______________________________________________________ as 7.5×11=82.5(82°30’E).  82.5×4*=330 now, 330÷(4×7.5)=5.5 *=It is formula to find timing ahead of GMT. (first ×4 then ÷60 give the time ahead of GMT)
