5. STANDARD MERIDIAN
Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich near London, divided earth in two eastern and
western hemisphere. Its value is 0°.
Indian Standard time is calculated on …………………………….. …
the basis of 82°30’E longitude which _______________________
Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) and is _____________________________________________________
applicable for full country.
IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT.
It means when there is noon in London, _______________________£££££££££££££££££££££££££
the Indian clock shows 5:30 PM.
It is the 11th meridian. And is calculated ______________________________________________________
as 7.5×11=82.5(82°30’E).
82.5×4*=330 now, 330÷(4×7.5)=5.5
*=It is formula to find timing ahead of GMT. (first ×4 then ÷60 give the time ahead of GMT)
6. INDIA AND THE WORLD
The Indian landmasshasa central location
between east and west Asia. India isa
southward extension of the Great Asian
Continent.
The trans Indian Ocean route ,connectsthe
Europe in the west and the countries of East
Asia which provides a strategic central location
to India
As the deccan peninsula protrudes into the
Indian Ocean, helping Indiato establish close
contact with West asia, Africa, Europe with the
western coast and the southeast and east asia
from the eastern coast.
By opening of Suez canal in 1869 reduced the
distanceof Indian to Europe by 7000
kilometers.
• Indian relationship with the world through land routes are much older than it maritime contact. Various passes through mountains were ideal
for travelers while the ocean restricts this interaction in that time. These routes were useful for exchanging ideas with theworld like
upanishads,Ramayana and stories of punchtantra, Indian number system, decimal system etc. Spices ,Muslins and other merchantiles are
taken through India . On the other hand, Greek sculptures, architectural styles of dome and minarets of West asia can be seen in India today
also.
