Plate tectonics refers to the movement of the Earth's crust and upper mantle, which are divided into sections called plates that float on the asthenosphere. The lithosphere, consisting of the crust and part of the upper mantle, is approximately 100 km thick and less dense than the underlying material, while the asthenosphere is a plastic layer beneath it. Plate movements are driven by convection currents resulting from the movement of hot magma within the Earth.
