- #2 My name is Kerri Solie and I am here to present information to you that proves how technology improves student achievement when implemented into the curriculum.
- #3 Technology is the wave of the future for today’s society and classrooms shouldn’t be left behind. When technology is implemented right, it helps build better instruction using research based products and services to enhance learning. Research has been conducted to prove that implementing technology into the curriculum will lead to higher student achievement. I am going to present 5 key points on how technology improves technology when implemented effectively into the curriculum.
- #4 Technology builds better instruction to increase student achievement. Researchers Kathy Brabec, Kimberly Fisher, and Dr. Howard Pitler work for the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Colorado. This corporation provides field tested, research-based products and services. Word processing, web resources, organizing and brainstorming software, data collection tools, and mulitimedia are parts of the readily available technology. They have identified 9 instructional strategies to build better instruction using technology.
- #5 These 9 strategies are research based. Students are able to a variety of skills that lead to a deeper understanding. They can classify objects, analyze information which strengthens their understanding, track effort and achievement using rubrics or charts, use graphic organizers, mental pictures, drawings, use kinesthetic classroom activities, and physical models. They provide powerful instructional strategies, establish direction for learning, apply their knowledge, and activate prior knowledge.
- #6 According to Schacter, researchers analyzed over 500 individual studies to draw their conclusions on how technology impacts student achievement and learning. Computer based instruction individualizes education to accommodate all learning styles. It enhances learning for higher achievers, along with helping and reaching the needs of lower to average achievers. Computer based instruction has current research and knowledge to incorporate standards into the curriculum.
- #7 Efficiency- students learn more in less time Positive effects and attitudes- students like their classes more and technology rich environments have a positive effect on achievement in all subject areas Consistency- when students have consistent access to technology, along with teacher training, it leads to student achievement gains.
- #8 The Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology (CARET) conducted research to prove that technology aids in higher student achievement. Technology influences positive learning environments. Collaborative learning methods for school improvement are also implemented with technology. It has been proven that when aligning technology between content area learning standards, test scores were significantly increased.
- #9 Performance improves when technology supports the curriculum standards being addressed. Higher order skills are developed using technology. Research, comparing and contrasting, analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing are a variety of ways to lead to innovation and deeper understanding by applying technology in their content area. Presentations, communication tools, and published projects all help to develop critical thinking skills. All of these are tied together to promote higher student achievement.
- #10 Today’s 21 st Century continues to inflate in the world of technology. Schools and educators need to prepare students for the workforce in the world of technology. Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT) have helped prepare students to learn new experiences of higher level reasoning and problem solving. Technology can enhance career preparation through thematic and interdisciplinary projects which can help students gain valuable knowledge for the actual workforce.
- #11 According to the Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment, utilizing individual laptops as an instructional tool improves student learning. Research has been done to provide clarity about how to effectively use technology to enhance student achievement. Studies were conducted over three years to verify the impact of laptop use on student learning outcomes. Student and teacher outcomes can be positively expressed through the use of individual laptops. Instructional strategies that accompany effective technology implementation lead to positive influences on academic goals.
