INTRODUCTION
An article is a word that is used
with a noun to indicate the type
of reference being made by the
noun. Article specify grammatical
definiteness of the noun in some
languages extending to volume
or numerical scope.
DEFINITE ARTICLE
A definite article indicates that
its noun is a particular one which is
indefinitable to the listener. It may
be something that the speaker has
already mentioned, or it may be
something uniquely specified. The
only definite article is “the”
INDEFINITE ARTICLE
An indefinite article indicates that
its noun is not a particular one
indefinitable to the listener. It may be
something that the speaker is
mentioning for the first, or its precise
identity may be irrelevant or hypothetical
or the speaker may be making a general
statement about any such thing.
RULE FOR THE USE OF
DEFINITE ARTICLE
“The” is used,
* Before universal things.
eg: the sun, the moon, the earth etc.
* Before name of epics
eg: The Bible, the Vedas
* Before superlative degree
eg: the greatest king, the youngest brother
* Before ordinal numbers
eg: the first, the second
* With adjectives to refer a whole group of
people
eg: The French, the English
* With names of geographical areas, rivers,
mountains, canals etc.
eg. The Ganges, the Suez, the Atlantic,
the Himalayas etc.
RULE FOR THE USE OF
INDEFINITE ARTICLE
Indefinite article is used,
* Before vowels and consonants
eg: an engineer, an apple, a doctor
* With names of jobs
eg: John is a teacher
* With nationalities and religions in the
singualr
eg: George is an English man
* With exclamatory sentence
eg: What a surprise!
* Before countable noun which is singular
eg: This is a ripe mango
* Before positive degree
eg: This is a big house
