Power electronics is a branch of electronics engineering that deals with high voltages and currents. It involves components that can handle voltages in the hundreds or thousands and currents in the hundreds of amps. Power electronics converters include rectifiers to convert AC to DC, inverters to convert DC to AC for solar power, choppers to vary DC voltage, and cycloconverters to change AC frequency. Common power electronic devices are DIACs, TRIACs, SCRs, GTOs, UJTs, PUTs, LASCRs, power diodes, PNPN diodes, BJTs, power MOSFETs, and IGBTs.
