Powdery mildew is a widespread fungal disease of green gram caused by Erysiphe polygoni. The disease produces small, irregular white powdery spots on the upper leaf surface that eventually spread to the lower surface. In severe cases, the entire leaf is covered with white powder. This causes leaves to yellow and drop off. The disease is most severe during flowering and pod development, eventually covering the pods. Infected plants have a grayish-white appearance with malformed, small pods containing few seeds. The fungus lives on and infects the surface of leaves, sending feeding structures into cells. It overwinters in black fruiting bodies on debris from infected plants. Warm, humid conditions favor disease spread primarily through air
