Poverty is defined as the lack of basic human needs like food, shelter, clothing due to not having enough money. It is more than just lack of income and includes lack of access to things like healthcare, education, jobs and security. Poverty can be absolute (lacking necessities) or relative (having fewer resources than others in a society). Causes of poverty include effects of British colonial rule, unemployment, and impacts of neo-liberal policies in India since the 1990s. Anti-poverty measures by the government include promoting economic growth and targeted programs to aid the poor.
