2. ‘SEVEN NATION ARMY’- THE WHITE STRIPES
• Narrative- the idea for our narrative for this song is that we would start with a boxing match
where the protagonist would be knocked down to the ground. He would lose the fight and
then get asked for a rematch over a text. The video would then show the contrast between
the intense preparation that the protagonist undergoes before the fight compared to the
laid back approach that his opponent takes who won the last fight. The protagonist would
win the rematch in the end.
• Genre- we would apply Goodwin’s theory because the lyrics and music would both match
the visuals. The lyrics and music are both very upbeat and motivational which will be
reflected by through our protagonist. We would also include close ups of the artist however
we’d leave out the voyeuristic view of women and inter textual references as they would not
be necessary and wouldn’t fit the genre.
• The audience would be primarily males aged 18-30 because the main characters involved
are male and it is a sport related inspirational video and this is the age range that would
typically be most interested in fitness.
4. ‘GNARLS BARKLEY’ - CRAZY
• Narrative – the idea for this narrative is that it would start with a few upper class men
playing poker with high amounts of money on the table, and when the protagonists begins
to lose, he quickly grabs the money and runs away, then the men who he’s playing try and
chase him down a dark street, and eventually the protagonist escapes
• Genre - Andrew Goodwin’s theory applies to this due to the connection between lyrics and
visuals, as the narrative will show a man in a high pressure situation losing his head and
turning crazy, and the lyrics talk about a man going crazy. Also, there is a relationship
between the music and visuals as there will be a lot of slow motion shots, matching the
slow tempo of the song.
• The Target audience would be around 25-40 and primarily male, due to it being an older
song and the theme revolving around a poker match in which you have to be 18 to legally
to play.
6. ‘FOR THE FIRST TIME’-THE SCRIPT
• Narrative- This song would be based around the concept of a man who’s life isn’t
going great as he goes through issues such as losing his job and arguing with his
partner. However, his luck changes at the end of the video but we have not decided
how to show this yet. We would also cross cut to the protagonist lip syncing.
• Genre- Goodwin’s theory would apply to this because the depressing nature of the
song would compliment the dark and gloomy atmosphere that the video is set in.
We would also include close ups of the protagonist singing. Again, it would not be
necessary to include inter textual references or voyeuristic imagery of the female
body because it doesn’t suit the sad genre.
• The target audience for this would be 20-45, as they would be able to relate to the
‘mid life crisis’ the man in the video is currently experiencing.
