The document discusses the representation of various social identities in a two minute film. It notes that the main characters are a married heterosexual couple meant to elicit emotion from audiences. The sexual orientation of two police officers is ambiguous. The document also discusses the middle-class social economic status of the couple implied by the man's job and home. Their ages are placed at their 30s to fit this status. Question 2
1.
2. SEXUAL ORIENTATION
The sexual orientation of the characters in our two minute film are obvious
in the two main characters as they are married so they are seen to be
straight.
Although the two police officers shown during the film aren’t given an
obvious representation of their sexual orientation. Their costume and
makeup gives the impression that they are both straight but there isn’t
any proof. The point could be argued.
We chose to have a married couple as it adds emotion because of the
storyline, it has more impact on the audience.
The sexual orientation of the other two, smaller characters isn’t clearly
given as it can be decided by the audience themselves, also adding
mystery to ‘The Untold’ storyline.
3. SOCIAL ECONOMIC CLASS
We decided that we’d go for a middle class couple as the storyline explains
the man is out at work and arrives home with a briefcase, suggesting he
is a businessman.
Another reason we chose to make them middle class was because of the
area we filmed it, the house is big and modern and would
stereotypically be owned by a middle class family/couple.
Having the male main character as a businessman suggests to the
audience that he earns good money, so the audience would expect him
to live in a nice area.
4. AGE
The age of the main characters relates to their social economic class
because; to own a nice house, have a car, be businessman, they must
have been working for a few years to save up for these luxuries.
Because of the above we decided to make the characters seen as in their
30’s, as it fits in with the occupation and property of the couple.
Whereas the age of the police officers are not obviously shown, they can be
interpreted by the audience because they are not seen for long
throughout the film. Although, stereotypically they would be seen to be
in their late 30’s as they are experienced, uncover officers.
5. REGIONAL IDENTITY
Our film is set in the Dodworth part of Barnsley which is unassumed by the
audience because of the value of the properties. Although it proves that
the story is set in Yorkshire rather than being a stereotypical London
home, which would be expected by the audience.
Our film being set in a place different to audience expectations makes our
film unique which was what we aimed to do in our original plan.
6. GENDER
The storyline of our film outlines the stereotypical expectations of male and
female in a relationship.
The women is dead and so is seen as weak and unable to defend herself.
Whereas the man is expected to have killed her because of their
violence stereotypically seen throughout society.
Although we break the stereotypical roles as both the police officers are
women but would usually be expected to both be men or at least one
man, because women are seen as weak.
7. CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES
In most of the film we don’t challenge stereotypes as: the man is at work
earning while the woman is at home alone and looking after the house.
The man is seen to be violent and strong from the beginning through
the way he walks and projects his voice, whereas the woman is weak
and innocent as she's suffering after being attacked.
We did this as a way of surprising the audience later on in the storyline as
its expected that he’s attacked her but the twist is further into the film.
Because of the change in storyline we would have used less stereotypical
expectations later on in the film to continue the fast pace of the film.
The police officers are the start of our challenging towards stereotypes but
we would have challenged them more if we had chance to record the
rest of the film.
