of My own
music
video
• These are the 2nd and 3rd shots of my music video, I have used the bands signature font
for the band name Palace and the name of the song Head above the water. This helps to
create a strong sense of brand identity as I have used this font on all of my other media
texts.
• The first of the two shots is a close up and helps to introduce the theme of smoke and
the second of the two shot is a an aerial shot of the ocean and acts as an establishing
shot to introduce the theme of water to the music video.
• These two shots are the 9th and 11th shots. The first of the two shots is a low angle
wide shot and helps to introduce the woodland setting and the main subject of the
narrative. She is walking in slowly to create the introdroduction to her struggle later in
the video.
• The second shot of the two is a close up and introduces the lead singer of the band. He
is singing the lyrics “Clear, its crystal clear, you're so pure you taste like gold.” this is a
convention of all performance based music videos.
• These are the 12th and 21st shots from my music video. The first of the two shot is a
close up of one of my band members playing the base. This is a convention of indie
music video and it presents the artist as musically talented and extraordinary in terms of
Richard Dyers star theory.
• The second of the two shot is a mid tracking slow motion shot. This is the first
underwater shot of the music video .This introduces the main subject of the narrative in
an underwater setting. The fact that she is swimming represents the girl as in some way
struggling.
• These are the 24th and 33rd shots of the video
• The first of the two is a close up of the main subject of the narrative. She is surrounded by blue
smoke and this gives the shot a dream like mood, giving a sense that the subject is taking time to
reflect on her troubles that she has been struggling with previously in the video.
• The second shot of the two is a close up of the lead singer with the guitarist in the background.
The lead singer is singing the lyrics “all our fooooooes” there is also smoke present in this shot
and shows the band performing in the world of the narrative. This adopts the convention of Sven
E Carlsson theory that states that televised bard videos show the artist to be performing in the
same setting as the narrative that is taking place but not actually taking part in the narrative
themselves.
• These two shots are the 38th and 39th shots in my video.
• They show the main subject of my narrative swimming in dark water with one light stripe of water.
This could represent the fact that she is begging to see the lighter side of her life and coming to
the end of her journey. Levi Strauss’ Binary opposition theory could also be applied to this shot as
there is a light and dark side of her life and the shot. The forst shot is an wide aerial shot.
• The second shot is a high angle mid shot. It shows the subject bringing her head up from under
the water. This adheres to Andrew Goodwins theory that visulas of the video illustrate the meaning
of the lyrics as the lyrics to this shot are “keep your head above the water”
• These are the 47th and 49th shots of my music video.
• The first shot of the two is a close up underwater shot where the main subject of the narrative is
sinking to the bottom of the pool and it seems as if she loosing her struggle. This creates an
enigma for the audience as to where the music video will end positively or not.
• The second shot is the subject running through the woods this again adheres to Andrew Goodwin's
theory as it the lyrics to the shot are ”running, running, running” the visuals illustrate the lyrics.
These shots are very short and edited with similar shots to create a repetitive pattern the faster
paced editing of the shots matches the increase in pace of the beat of the song and therefore
adhere to Andrew Goodwin's thought beat theory. The action of running, combined with the
increase of tempo and pace of editing help to create a climatic ending for the narrative.
• The final shot of my music video.
• It shows the subject of my narrative bringing her head up from under the dark
water. This suggests that she is at the end of her struggle and answers the
enigma created in the previous shots. The shot then fades to black at the same
time that the instrumental music fades out. This is a convention of some
narrative based indie music videos.
My music video includes
• A loose narrative and a performance aspect- the video has a very loose a narrative and a
band performance. According to Carlsson This type of video is where the artist is more
like the narrator to a story rather than solely being a performer. The artist will narrate
imagery that relates to the narrative rather than inner personal thoughts. The artist is
shown to be performing in the same setting as the narrative that is taking place but not
actually taking part in the narrative themselves. The narrative helps to give meaning to the
lyrics.
• Moody atmosphere- I have created this through the use of a blue tone, this also related to
the theme of water
• Rrelationship between the lyrics and the visuals- my visuals often illustrated the lyrics.
This adheres to Andrew Goodwin's theory.
• Brand identity- I have created a strong sense of brand identity by using a blue tone in my
music video and across all of my products as well as the themes of water, smoke and
nature. I have also used the band signature font.
• Shots of the band- I have included close ups of the lead singer singing and the band
playing their instruments.
• A variation of shot types- this is a convention of music videos and It helps to keep the
