2. Costume
Pop is traditionally a bright, uplifting genre. This idea is continued in all areas, especially
costume. Pop artists are conventionally shown wearing bright, girly clothing along with
pretty makeup and hair. This is done due to the fact that both male and female singers
like to be shown as aesthetically pleasing to their young audience in order to draw them
in and make them want to be more like them. Below are some examples of what pop
artists are photographed wearing, in order to maintain their stylish star image:
3. Setting
◦ Setting is a crucial part in displaying genre, and it usually somewhere that makes the
audience feel positive and displays emphasises artists as having fun. It can be used to
enhance the meaning behind a song or even be used as a way of relating to the
audience. Setting is mostly shown through music videos as they can demonstrate most
effectively the mood which artists show in their music applied to real life. One music
video which reflects this strongly is the video for ‘Bang Bang’ by Jessie J, Ariana Grande
and Nicki Minaj as they are all shown having fun together in various settings. The
background in mainly pink and colourful which reflects the fun, upbeat tone of the
song. Below is a link to this video.

4. Themes
◦ Common themes which appear in pop music is the theme of love, breakups, and
being confident. These appear the most due to the fact that pop music is meant to
make people feel better about themselves, and talking about love can achieve this.
Singing about breakups can also be relatable for people so it will therefore console
them and assure them that things can get better. Self confidence appears in almost all
pop songs, and is achieved by using uplifting melodies which make people feel happy
and encouraging them to go and have fun.
