This document presents a theory of innovation proposed by Nam Pyo Suh. The theory consists of three laws of innovation: 1) All steps of the innovation continuum must be present for innovation to occur, 2) An innovation hub can form if its initial size exceeds a critical threshold and the activation barrier is overcome, and 3) The rate of innovation nucleation must exceed the rate of diffusion of innovative ideas. The theory is analogous to principles governing natural systems and can inform government policy to stimulate economic growth through innovation. Two case studies are presented to support the theory.

Zotefoams licenses MuCell extrusion technology to produce microcellular thin roll foam products called microZOTE. MicroZOTE foams are suitable for food contact and medical applications due to their inert and environmentally friendly properties. The MuCell process injects supercritical carbon dioxide into molten polymer to produce a uniform microcellular structure without crosslinking. This results in a superior foamed product with improved mechanical properties and high output rates. MicroZOTE offers benefits such as a homogeneous structure, smooth surface, recyclability, and compliance with food contact regulations. Potential applications include adhesive tapes, seals, construction materials, automotive parts, medical products, and sports equipment.

StackTeck Systems received an award for their Thin Recess Injection Molding (TRIM) technology used to produce a 64oz carry-out pail for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Using TRIM, which pushes the design limits with ultra-thin panels covering 90% of the part, allowed for a weight reduction of approximately 40% compared to conventional thin-wall packaging. GR8 Engineering is also developing innovative mold technologies for thin-wall packaging, including a two-stage injection compression molding process aiming to produce PET preforms with a wall thickness 500 times smaller than the part length. This would allow for much thinner and lighter plastic containers.

3D printing has several myths and realities. It is not as quick or easy as imagined, as it requires multiple software programs and equipment steps to produce a finished part. While high quality parts can be 3D printed, the speed is too slow to replace mass production. Scanning technologies provide point cloud data that is difficult to convert into CAD files. Large parts can now be 3D printed, but large printers are very expensive. 3D printing is best for applications where time is important, such as rapid prototyping, low volume production, or customized parts.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.
