Editor's Notes
Good evening, and thank you for the opportunity to present tonight. I know we only have seven-ten minutes set aside for each presentation so I will do my best to quickly provide an overview of our activities of the past year and the progress we are making at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre. This presentation is for information purposes for Council and we are handing out a copy of the presentation and the 2007 Business Plan for review.
The three main departments of the Innovation Centre include business incubation, small and medium enterprise support and market development projects.
Our SME Support Services work to grow and coordinate the IT community here providing a valuable resource to local companies. We meet with our larger IT consumers to try and find ways they can use local IT firms in their plans and link appropriate firms to them. We will also continue to coordinate the TAG technology luncheon, the IT Breakfast group and training workshops on topics that are of interest to our local IT community . These services are an important and necessary component of establishing a healthy IT community. As an ongoing practice, we continually monitor bidding sites to discover and distribute opportunities and also work to coordinate local companies where appropriate. We operate ITSSM.com a site that includes a directory of local IT companies, job postings, event information, news and Sault Reconnect – a sign up area where people from the Sault working outside the community can register for updates and learn of opportunties in our community. Finally, the Innovation Centre runs an annual IT awards – this year’s gala event had 100 attendees and featured keynote speaker Doug Barber, former CEO of Gennum Corporation and one of Canada’s most respected entrepreneurs. The IC staff continues to provide business and technology strategy and guidance services to local companies to help them achieve their goals. . Local IT businesses have been supportive of the SME support services conducted by the SSMIC and are receptive to expansion of these services. The ‘neutral party’ status of the SSMIC also provides benefits that have been recognized by the local IT community when facilitating larger IT projects among multiple companies.
