It is possible to transform unpolarized light into polarized light. Polarized light waves are light waves in which the vibrations occur in a single plane. The process of transforming unpolarized light into polarized light is known as polarization. There are a variety of methods of polarizing light. The four methods discussed on this page are: Polarization by Transmission Polarization by Reflection Polarization by Refraction Polarization by Scattering
Polarization by Transmission

Polarization by Reflection
Polarization by Refraction
Polarization by Scattering Polarization also occurs when light is scattered while traveling through a medium. When light strikes the atoms of a material, it will often set the electrons of those atoms into vibration. The vibrating electrons then produce their own electromagnetic wave that is radiated outward in all directions. This newly generated wave strikes neighboring atoms, forcing their electrons into vibrations at the same original frequency. These vibrating electrons produce another electromagnetic wave that is once more radiated outward in all directions. This absorption and reemission of light waves causes the light to be scattered about the medium. (This process of scattering contributes to the blueness of our skies, a topic to be discussed later .) This scattered light is partially polarized. Polarization by scattering is observed as light passes through our atmosphere. The scattered light often produces a glare in the skies. Photographers know that this partial polarization of scattered light leads to photographs characterized by a washed-out sky. The problem can easily be corrected by the use of a Polaroid filter. As the filter is rotated, the partially polarized light is blocked and the glare is reduced. The photographic secret of capturing a vivid blue sky as the backdrop of a beautiful foreground lies in the physics of polarization and Polaroid filters.

Polarization by Transmission
Polarization in 3D Movies Polarization is often implemented in the production and viewing of 3D films. When watching a 3D movie, there are actually two images being projected onto the screen at once. The two images were filmed with two separate cameras from two slightly offset locations. These two images are projected onto the screen through Polaroid filters. The molecules of one of the filters is aligned vertically, the other is aligned horizontally. The audience is given 3D glasses that have one lens aligned horizontally and the other aligned vertically. Thus, one eye sees one image and the other eye sees the other image. The brain receives both signals and perceives depth on a flat screen. The entire process mimics the manner in which  stereoscopic vision works.
Polarization In Everyday Situations

This photograph should be compared with the one above. In this photo, the reflected glare that was seen on the water's surface (previous photo) has been removed by the use of a Polaroid filter. It is much easier to see the sidewalk below the water surface.
This photograph should be compared with the one above. The reflected glare seen on the glass panels of the lab cabinet has been removed by the use of a Polaroid filter. It is much easier to see what is present inside of the lab cabinets. This set of two photos provides another example of how a Polaroid filter can block the annoying glare that is caused when light becomes polarized upon reflection.
The affect of Polaroid filters is vividly portrayed in this photo. The sky and the fields are not washed out when viewed through the sunglasses. The Polaroid filters block the partially polarized light that is caused by passage through the sky and by reflection off the crops.
Polarized light is often used in the stress analysis of molded plastics. Polarized light passing through molded plastics will reveal stress marks and stress patterns that would not otherwise be apparent to the naked eye. The plane of polarization of polarized light is rotated by these molded plastics at any location where the plastic is stressed. The amount of rotation depends upon the wavelength of light. White light consists of various wavelengths, each associated with a distinct color. Using a Polaroid filter and rotating it will reveal stress patterns in various colors at various angles of rotation.
Passing polarized light through molded plastics and using a rotating Polaroid filter to analyze the transmitted light reveals stress marks and stress factors. This protractor was fabricated by injecting hot molten plastic into a mold at the 205° mark (right side; 205° on the innner scale). The molten plastic flows around the mold to fill it. Observe the stress patterns on the corners of the openings. Also observe the stress mark at 22° (top left; read 22° on the inner scale). This stress mark is the location where the molten plastic flowing around opposite sides of the mold meets up with each other. This is sometimes referred to as the  weld line . Now for a little phun: fling the protractor at a hard surface and 4 times out of 5 it will break at the stress mark at 22°.
A computer screen is a source of polarized light. And most sunglasses contain Polaroid filters that are linearly polarized. Find a molded plastic (plastic tableware works great) and hold it up to a white portion of a computer screen. While looking at the light passing through the plastic, hold one of the filters of the sunglasses in front of an open eye. Observe the color. Rotate the sunglass filter (or the plastic); observe how the color changes. It's so cool you'll have to show a friend or family member.
The use of polaroid filters is another glaring example of physics for better living. Their use can brighten the day of any photographer.

Polarization is also used in the entertainment industry to produce and show 3-D movies. Three-dimensional movies are actually two movies being shown at the same time through two projectors. The two movies are filmed from two slightly different camera locations. Each individual movie is then projected from different sides of the audience onto a metal screen. The movies are projected through a polarizing filter. The polarizing filter used for the projector on the left may have its polarization axis aligned horizontally while the polarizing filter used for the projector on the right would have its polarization axis aligned vertically. Consequently, there are two slightly different movies being projected onto a screen. Each movie is cast by light that is polarized with an orientation perpendicular to the other movie. The audience then wears glasses that have two Polaroid filters. Each filter has a different polarization axis - one is horizontal and the other is vertical. The result of this arrangement of projectors and filters is that the left eye sees the movie that is projected from the right projector while the right eye sees the movie that is projected from the left projector. This gives the viewer a perception of depth.

Now for a little phun: fling the protractor at a hard surface and 4 times out of 5 it will break at the stress mark at 22°.
