OBJECTIVES:
1.find the slope
2.use point-slope form
3.substitute the given
values
4.find the equation of a
line
Mathematical Concepts:
The Point-Slope Form
given a slope and a point of a line, we may find the
equation by substituting their respective values in
the point-slope form.
y - y1 = m (x - x1)
EXAMPLE 1
Solution:
Let x1 = -2
y1 = 3
m = 4
Given the slope and point.
Use the point-slope form
Find the equation of a line with slope of 4 and passing through
the point (-2, 3). Express the equation in the slope-intercept
form.
y - 3 = 4(x - (-2))
y - 3 = 4(x + 2)
y - 3 = 4x + 8
y = 4x + 11
y - y1 = m (x - x1)
EXAMPLE 2
Solution:
Let x1 = 4
y1 = 5
m = -

y - y1 = m (x - x1)
EXAMPLE 3
Solution:
Let x1 = 3
y1 = -3
m = -5
Given the slope and a point.
Use the point-slope form
Find the equation of a line passing through the point (3 , -3) with the slope
of – 5. Express the equation in the slope-intercept form.
y - - 3 = -5(x - 3)
y + 3 = -5x + 15
y = -5x + 12
y - y1 = m (x - x1)
