Podcasts In Higher Education – Learning On The Move?
Podcasts can be of particular interest in order to promote flexibility in teaching and learning. In our presentation, accompanied by a hands-on workshop, we will share our experience of creating and evaluating the use of podcasts based on projects conducted through CETL ALiC (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning - Active Learning in Computing) and the TEL Team.
In this workshop you will be introduced to podcasts and their practical application in a learning and teaching environment. You will use Audacity software to create your own podcast and then upload it to the podcast server. This will give you the option to make your podcast available for downloading via RSS feed (e.g. iTunes) to your intended audience.

Project Greenfield: A New Way of Thinking about MIT OpenCourseWareBrandon Muramatsu
“Wouldn’t it be great if MIT OpenCourseWare…” How many times have you thought about this? What if there were a sandbox in which we could test and experiment with the tools and services that might prove useful to OpenCourseWare visitors, and more generally open educational resource content providers? The Office of Educational Innovation and Technology (OEIT) at MIT is setting up just such a sandbox, through Project Greenfield, to experiment with innovative experiences built on a mirror copy of MIT OpenCourseWare. Presented by Brandon Muramatsu at the Open Education 2010 Conference, Barcelona, Spain, November 2, 2010.

Abstract: "Audio or video podcasts can offer students different ways of learning and can add value by providing access to learning materials ‘on the move’. This paper presents an initial investigation into the use of excel podcasts for undergraduate and foundation level students in different faculties at a single university. The podcasts were shown in lecture and seminar settings and uploaded to an online server for all students to access in their own time; either via a web browser or portable video player such as an iPod. Results for the on-going study were positive with the majority of students using them for developing their understanding of excel and exam revision. Students expressed an interest in having similar supplementary learning materials for other modules. Such conclusions drawn from this study highlight the need to investigate the use of podcasts further in the teaching and learning environment. "

The SpokenMedia project’s goal is to increase the effectiveness of web-based lecture media by improving the search and discoverability of specific, relevant media segments. SpokenMedia creates media-linked transcripts that will enable users to find contextually relevant video segments to improve their teaching and learning. The SpokenMedia project envisions a number of tools and services layered on top of, and supporting, these media-linked transcripts to enable users to interact with the media in more educationally relevant ways. Presented by Brandon Muramatsu to the IEEE-Computer Society Bangalore Section on August 6, 2009. (Unfortunately I didn't record the audio from this presentation :(, I thought it went really well and would have made a great slidecast.)

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Editor's Notes
An introduction first – with the three headings provided Then onto the rest. Note that there is a paper with much more information with references available to read as well in greater detail.
Note: Enhanced podcast with other material such as text/ppt slides Vodcasts are with video.
It might be safe to say that almost all are familiar with downloading material and/or uploading material to the web or personal devices. A very easy learning curve at any rate.
Assuming you already have the hardware – a computer - it is relatively inexpensive. A microphone that can run $50 (or may be built into your computer) There may be time constraints to producing fine podcasts. This will be up to the instructor/student
There is also EPN (education podcast network) And education podcasts.com
Note: Edison research also shows that 86% of the general population own a media device. SO it may, in fact be larger now.
For my purposes I looked specifically at instructor generated content. For the purposes of our department – that is where we would begin. The most common use intuitively was the most common use studied – instructor podcasts of lectures and of review
Students with the Duke iPod initiative favoured pre-loaded material Students downloaded material mostly just before tests and exams instead of weekly Not everyone will be satisfied all the time with the quality, speed, duration, etc. Visuals were important – enhanced podcasts would be most useful
