please write responses separately. Peer Response one K.M The Crane Family Carol Crane is now 45 years old and has come in due to a court order for counseling. Carol has gotten two DUIs and doesn’t seem to think she has a problem. Although Carol only leaves her house when she is going to a bar. Carols children are both out of the house and Carol has been unable to hold down a romantic relationship. Furthermore, Carol was unable to fulfil her dreams as a youth and be a writer. Counseling Goals It seems as though Carol’s psychological well-being is at stake. Scientists have discussed six elements that is necessary for an individual’s psychological well-being, these are: “autonomy, personal growth, self-acceptance, life purpose, mastery, and positive relatedness” (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Working with Carol, it will be important to help her gain resiliency through helping her integrate her self-representations (Diehl & Hays, 2010). This will help her to become more self-accepting. Furthermore, it seems as though Carol is facing an empty-nest (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Henning (2011), discusses enantiodromia; the presence of gains and losses simultaneously. During the losses that an individual experience, they lose the sense of self as well as the life that they had grown around that self (Henning, 2011). For Carol to grow she needs to learn how to leave her old self and embrace the new self that has grown around the losses of the old (Henning, 2011). Carol seems to have brought up a multitude of losses that she is and has experienced such as failures of romantic relationships, giving up her dream as a writer and having both of her kids out of the house. AT this point, it is important for Carol to embrace living alone again and being able to do things because she wants to. Therefore, another counseling goal will be to work on Carol embracing the new self. Counseling Interventions It seems as though Carol has not embraced the new self’s that she has had to create well and will be needing help to gain a sense of purpose and resiliency in order for her to move forward. Therefore, I want to help Carol work through the developmental dilemmas that are unresolved from her past with her (Henning, 2011). This way she is able to work through them and learn from the past and help to be able to grow into the person that is trying to be created, this will mean that Carol and I will need to understand the specific stage of development, identify the dilemmas from the past and work through the dilemmas in a way that meets present and past requirements (Henning, 2011). Another counseling intervention I would like to try with Carol is mindfulness through meditation. It seems as though Carol may be worrying about her children as she is dealing with the empty-nest syndrome and other past issues worrying her it is important to help her lower those stressors so that she is able to react differently to stressful scenarios. Gabby is a 19-year-old who is in the “figuring it out stage” in her life. She lives with her parents and thinks this is okay as long as she does what they tell her to do. Gabby does not attend college and does not have a steady job because she has not found a job that interests her enough to stay. Her parents are pressuring her to settle down and get married and Gabby does not know what she wants to do at this point in her life. In Gabby’s situation, Schaie’s Theory best describes the developmental period she is experiencing. This theory will help the counselor build a good and strong rapport with Gabby and guide her to make the best decisions for her future.
Promoting Positive Development
It is important to guide Gabby in the direction that she feels is best for herself because as Dr. Kailla Edger states, “young adults aren’t cemented a lot of times, is this where I really want to be (Laureate, 2013f, 0:34)” stage in her developmental stage in her life. A clinical mental health counselor should keep this in mind when working with young adults are transitioning from adolescence into young adults and who are trying to find their niche in life rather it's going to college or finding employment. It also seems confirmed subjectively by emerging adults’ reports that during the 18–25 age period most of them feel not like adolescents and not like adults but somewhere in between, on the way to adulthood but not there yet (Arnett, 2007).
Just like the past transitions from an infant to child and child to adolescence, our cognitive skills into adulthood have not developed due to lack of experience and our environment. Each stage in life comes with a learning process and the experiences and knowledge from the last stages only get build upon as we go through new experiences in life. For Gabby, Schaie’s theory will help her through this new transition into young adulthood. Schaie’s theory emphasizes the importance of new roles, needs, and responsibilities in determining adult intellectual functioning (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, pp. 417). Shaie’s theory consists of seven stages of how young adults mentally function and they are the achieving, responsible, ill-structured, executive, reorganizing, reintegrative and the legacy-leaving stages. This theory helps with accommodating the client by helping to set realistic goals that are tailored to the client’s cognitive development and skills they have in each stage.

This week’s readings about human growth and development theories and a neuropsychological perspective on spiritual development was interesting and thought provoking. 2 Peter 1:5-7 tells us “Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, …, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.” (New International Version) I feel developing a knowledge of human growth and spiritual development will enable us live out this verse and become more effective as human service professionals.
Two human growth and development theories that have been supported by research are Erikson’s personality theory and Piaget’s Cognitive developmental theory. Freud’s personality theory continues to be examined and used with other theories, but research has not supported this theory (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).
Erikson’s personality theory explains eight psychosocial aspects of attitudes and feelings toward self and others (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Counselors like this theory because they feel that it focuses on the problems they are trying to help: feelings and attitudes about self and others (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Erikson’s ideas have led to numerous other behavioral studies by developmental researchers (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).
Piaget’s Cognitive developmental theory focuses on logical thinking where he assumed that a normal adult has the capacity to think logically. Although, for children logical thought centers around four stages to begin with a sensory world as an infant to building knowledge as an adolescence (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Piaget’s theory fulfilled a need that explained complex qualitative changes in children’s abilities changes over time (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Professionals find this Piaget’s theory to be useful in identifying the ages children understand certain problems or social interactions (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).
Freud’s personality theory examines the complex functioning of the adult personality and details development throughout childhood (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Freud believed the adult personality functioned as three separate characteristics: id, ego, and superego (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Furthermore, Freud found that the conflicts with id, ego, and superego stemmed from experiences during the five psychosexual developmental stages (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Freud assumed that a majority of a person’s personality was developed before the age of five, this is one of many ideas of Freud’s theory that empirical research does not support (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).

As you've been learning in this course, we go through various life stages
throughout our lives, and the last stage that we enter is known as the elderly
stage, the older adult stage, or from Erikson's perspective, developmentally, is
the integrity versus ego despair stage. And technically, we reference people who
are 65 and above as being part of this older developmental stage.
I've had the privilege of working with a number of aging adults. We know that
right now about one in six adults in the US is age 60 or older, which means this is
a population in need of our help and support. In fact, while people who are aged
60 and older are growing, the population of people available to support them is
actually diminishing.
In my experience, I've been able to work with folks who have been dealing with
end of life issues, meaning they had a terminal illness and were facing an
imminent death. I've worked with individuals who were in long term care. I've
worked with individuals who have faced retirement and beyond and found a loss
of purpose or a sense of needing to find a new avenue for their lives.
In the integrity versus ego despair area of life, for example, to use the Erikson's
model, we know that people are trying to find their place, purpose, and meaning
in life. They are passed their childbearing years. They're passed their
employment years, and they're really trying to find a sense of who they are and
the legacy that they'll leave. One of the techniques or interventions that you can
use with this population is a life review to help them explore, collect, and artifact
their memories of their life to place these artifacts in a sense of meaning and
perspective that they might even share with their children and grandchildren
along the way.
Family can be both very supportive and very challenging to the aging client. As a
counselor, it's your job to remember who your client is. If your client is the aging
individual, that is who you will advocate for and with, and you want to involve
them in his decision making process as much as possible.
For this particular stage, the aging population, what you really want to focus on is
the fact that these are individuals who've led a long and productive life. They do
have value and meaning and they have a lot to teach you. It's important to
recognize that while they may be in physical or cognitive decline, the spirit of the
active and engaged adult is still present. And when you can connect with that
spirit, you can find a place to work with your client.
When you begin your training as a counselor, one of the aspects that you're
asked to look at here in your Walden program are your personal characteristics.

1. If you were counseling Helen from the Gestalt framework, what additional technique(s) could you employ in the session? What would you hope to accomplish?
AG 100 words
I chose to answer question number 2, what was the goal of chair dialog in the case of Helen and how effective do you believe this technique was. I found this therapy session to be very interesting. I thought that the chair dialog experiment was effective in helping Helen see how people from her past and present (her parents) effect the way that she makes decisions now. I think that this session is the perfect example of Gestalt Therapy. Yontef states that “Gestalt therapy focuses more on process (what is happening) than content (what is being discussed). The emphasis is on what is being done, thought and felt at the moment rather than on what was, might be, could be, or should be.” On some occasions the therapist pointed out some physiological changes in Helen when talking about certain topics and people. One change she noticed was the change in tone and attitude when talking about her dad versus her mom. I thought that this was important because it gives insight on the effects of her relationship with her parents now.
I think that this session was effective in showing Helen the effects of her relationship with her mom in the present. I think that this was effective in helping Helen understand that the dialog that her mother has given to her over the years about her responsibilities to her family and others is what stops her from perusing the goals that she desires in her life. I also think that it was effective in showing how Helen sees her father and the effects that those visions have on her decision making. She seems to think that her father had it “easy” and didn’t have make any hard decisions as she was a child. There seems to be a bit of resentment from Helen towards her dad so she thinks that her mom’s advice is what’s best although she knows this is not what she wants. I also though that it was important that the therapist explained that during this dialog she (Helen) is only dealing with her internalizations of her parents, and not her actual parents. Helen seems to be relieved after hearing this and is more willing to move forward. The revealing of these things seems to help Helen understand why she feels discontented and not able to live her life the way she wants.

A LEADER’S GUIDE TO WHY PEOPLE BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO
To be autonomous means to act in accord with one’s self—it means feeling free and
volitional in one’s actions. When autonomous, people are fully willing to do what
they are doing, and they embrace the activity with a sense of interest and
commitment. Their actions emanate from their true sense of self, so they are being
authentic. In contrast, to be controlled means to act because one is being pressured.
When controlled, people act without a sense of personal endorsement. Their
behavior is not an expression of the self, for the self has been subjugated to the
controls. In this condition, people can reasonably be described as alienated.

Leaders influence people. Unless leaders understand why people behave the way they do,
their efforts to influence others will have random, perhaps unpredictable, even alienating effects.
You might try to influence someone and get just the opposite effect that you expected. For instance,
perhaps you have been trying to get a subordinate to do something at work, and no matter what you
do, she just won’t respond. On the other hand, maybe your boss has been asking you to do
something, and you resist. If you’ve ever asked yourself as a leader or a colleague, “Now why did
he do that?” you’ve wrestled with this problem. At home, at work, or at play, you have no doubt
observed people doing things that were, to you, unexpected or unusual. You may have seen two
people in very similar situations respond in very different ways. All of these incidents raise the
question, for leaders, of why people behave the way they do. This is a very complex subject about
which volumes have been and continue to be written. This chapter will introduce some
fundamentals about what motivates people, suggest under what conditions they will give their best
efforts, and then offer a summary framework that has proven pragmatic and powerful for leaders in a
variety of situations.
Some people resist this conversation by saying that you are being asked to be psychologists
rather than leaders. There is a difference. Both leaders and psychologists have to know something

Qualitative research question are open-ended in nature, which means that they are able to respond to questions without limitations. Besides, they are easily understood by respondents and do not need to clarify (Creswell & Poth, 2016).

The researchers design and develop the process, which means the process is not static and is subject to evolution over time. The researcher must also collaborate with the participants and maintain ethics throughout the process (Creswell & Poth, 2016).
Types of qualitative research questions include exploratory which seeks to understand something without influencing the results with preconceived notions. Another type of question is the predictive questions which seek to understand the outcome surrounding a topic. Evolution
Biological evolution involves genetic changes in a group of organisms. These changes occur on two levels:
macroevolution
(the grand scale), and

On the "macro" scale of evolution, different species arise, live for a while, and then pass into extinction as new species arise to replace them (over thousands or millions of years). Microevolution involves small-scale changes within a single species. This occurs as populations respond to their own unique circumstances over a period of a few generations. Populations Evolve, Not Individuals
Because an individual's genes are determined at conception, individuals can't evolve. But individuals are part of a

Every person has a worldview whether he realizes it or not. What is a worldview? James W. Sire defines a worldview as:
[A] commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions (assumptions which may be true, partially true or entirely false) that we hold (consciously or subconsciously, consistently or inconsistently) about the basic constitution of reality, and that provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being.

Stated more succinctly, "…[A] worldview is simply the total set of beliefs that a person has about the biggest questions in life." F. Leroy Forlines describes such questions as the "inescapable questions of life." Life's inescapable questions include the following: "Is there a God? If so, what is He like? How can I know Him? Who am I? Where am I? How can I tell right from wrong? Is there life after death? What should I and what can I do about guilt? How can I deal with my inner pain?" Life's biggest, inescapable questions relate to whether there is a God, human origins, identity, purpose, and the hereafter, just to mention a few.
Satisfying answers to the "inescapable questions of life" are provided by the Holy Scriptures. The Holy Scriptures, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, form the starting point and foundation for the biblical worldview. More specifically related to our purposes, the apostle Paul reflects several components of the biblical worldview in his letter to the Romans.
The apostle Paul authored Romans toward the end of his third missionary journey, about 57 A.D. He addressed this letter specifically to the Christians in Rome. At the time the church in Rome consisted of Jewish and Gentile believers, with Gentile Christians in the majority. Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome in order to address specific concerns and challenges they were facing. While Romans was an occasional letter (not a systematic theology), Paul presents the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a very systematic fashion. The Gospel is actually the overarching theme of Romans as Paul spells this out in his programmatic statement in 1:16–17. As the systematic presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Romans is foundational to the biblical/Christian worldview.

Motivation is the psychological forces that determine the direction of a person’s behavior in an organization, a person level of effort and a person level of persistence in the face of obstacles. Managers should be concerned with motivation because it explains why people behave the way they do. It can explain why a waiter is mean or nice, or why the customer service representative you are dealing with is helpful and understanding or rude and unhelpful.
Leadership is the process by which a person exerts influence over other people and inspires, motivates, and directs their activities, to help achieve group or organizational goal. Leaders are affective when they can unite a group to achieve a common goal. There are five types of power that a leader must balance. Legitimate power: the authority that a manager has by virtue of their position in an organizations hierarch. Reward power: the ability of a manager to give or withhold tangible and intangible rewards. Coercive power: the ability of a manager to punish others. Expert power: power that is based on the special knowledge, skills, and expertise that a leader possesses. Referent power: power that comes from subordinates’ and coworkers’ respect, admiration, and loyalty.
There are five key elements of group dynamics. Group size: the number of members in a group can be an important determinant of members’ motivation, commitment and group performance. Group roles: a set of behaviors and task that a member of a group is expected to perform because of his or her position in the group. Group leadership: leadership is a key ingredient for high- performing groups, teams, and organizations. Group development over time: it sometimes takes a self-managed team two or three years to perform up to it true capabilities. Group norms: shared guidelines or rules for behavior that most group member follow. Group cohesivenes.

- 1. please write responses separately. Peer Response one K.M The Crane Family Carol Crane is now 45 years old and has come in due to a court order for counseling. Carol has gotten two DUIs and doesn’t seem to think she has a problem. Although Carol only leaves her house when she is going to a bar. Carols children are both out of the house and Carol has been unable to hold down a romantic relationship. Furthermore, Carol was unable to fulfil her dreams as a youth and be a writer. Counseling Goals It seems as though Carol’s psychological well-being is at stake. Scientists have discussed six elements that is necessary for an individual’s psychological well-being, these are: “autonomy, personal growth, self-acceptance, life purpose, mastery, and positive relatedness” (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Working with Carol, it will be important to help her gain resiliency through helping her integrate her self-representations (Diehl & Hays, 2010). This will help her to become more self-accepting. Furthermore, it seems as though Carol is facing an empty-nest (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Henning (2011), discusses enantiodromia; the presence of gains and losses simultaneously. During the losses that an individual experience, they lose the sense of self as well as the life that they had grown around that self (Henning, 2011). For Carol to grow she needs to learn how to leave her old self and embrace the new self that has grown
- 2. around the losses of the old (Henning, 2011). Carol seems to have brought up a multitude of losses that she is and has experienced such as failures of romantic relationships, giving up her dream as a writer and having both of her kids out of the house. AT this point, it is important for Carol to embrace living alone again and being able to do things because she wants to. Therefore, another counseling goal will be to work on Carol embracing the new self. Counseling Interventions It seems as though Carol has not embraced the new self’s that she has had to create well and will be needing help to gain a sense of purpose and resiliency in order for her to move forward. Therefore, I want to help Carol work through the developmental dilemmas that are unresolved from her past with her (Henning, 2011). This way she is able to work through them and learn from the past and help to be able to grow into the person that is trying to be created, this will mean that Carol and I will need to understand the specific stage of development, identify the dilemmas from the past and work through the dilemmas in a way that meets present and past requirements (Henning, 2011). Another counseling intervention I would like to try with Carol is mindfulness through meditation. It seems as though Carol may be worrying about her children as she is dealing with the empty-nest syndrome and other past issues worrying her it is important to help her lower those stressors so that she is able to react differently to stressful scenarios. It is clear that the empty-nest is upsetting to her, furthermore, she brought up not accomplishing a past dream of being a writer. By practicing meditation with Carol, she will be able to clear her mind and be present in the moment (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). This is important as Carol seems to live in the past a lot. This will help

Carol be able to reduce stress and be able to integrate her self- representations as we move further into counseling Summary Overall, I think Carol has unresolved issues from her past that have made it hard for her to move on from. It seems as though Carols children for the most part kept her busy and able to focus on daily life. However, with having no children in the home anymore, Carol seems to be stressing about her own identity. This is evident through Carol bringing up her dream of being a writer. Furthermore, the losses that Carol experienced at a younger age were not fully worked through so that she could come to terms with the losses and gain something from the losses. This has helped her to create a grouped self- representations system. Therefore, working through past losses with Carol and Mindfulness through mediation should help Carol to integrate self-representations and create a better cohesive view of herself and help her reduce stress so that she is able to work through the past issues and accept her new identity. Peer Response two T.H Main Discussion Post: Reeves Family Lucas Reeves Lucas is 41 years old and a single father of three children. Lucas has come to counseling because over the past few years; his attention has been directed towards his children. This attention has resulted in Lucas putting his career aspirations on hold for his children, and now that the children are a bit older, Lucas has started to feel lonely, unsuccessful, and lost. Lucas explains that his friends are further ahead of him financially and because of this, he is unable to participate in recreational events due to his financial limits. Lucas seems to be unsatisfied with where he is in life, and his present situation is drastically different from the life he envisioned for himself. Two developmental challenges associated with Lucas Middle adulthood is a time where adults reevaluation their lives regarding their expected goals, legacy, fulfillment, and support. Lucas seems to be struggling to go through a period of
- 5. regulation of loss. Much of Lucas’s life has not been meeting his needs and expectations he had for himself, and because he had to adapt to the change of his circumstances (being a single father of three), he is finding the acceptance of the losses difficult, thus resulting in distress and dissatisfaction (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Lucas explained how his financial obligations are occupied by his daughter who has fetal alcohol syndrome and putting his children first. Lucas may never be able to reach the level of success that his closest friends have achieved. For Lucas to find contentment, he would need to try and adjust his expectations and accept lower levels of functioning (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Another developmental challenge occurring in Lucas’s case is Erikson’s theory of self-concept. Lucas’s stage of development is categorized by generativity vs. stagnation which is the primary focus of concern in middle adulthood (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Many areas of Lucas’s life compromise the security of this stage in Erikson’s theory. Adults often reevaluation and reflect on the imitate relationships they have, the legacy they have built, and the meaning their life brings to them which all bring fulfillment that contributes to a person’s identity and self-concept. Adulthood comes with many challenges all on its own, and to complete one’s life structure, adults have to address issues as arise to develop further. Depending on the challenge that occurs, how a person handles the issues determine whether some of the “aspects of oneself are lived out; or other aspects are inhibited or neglected’ (Henning, 2011, p. 1). Due to the many unfortunate circumstances that have occurred in Lucas’s life, he has had to raise three children independently which has caused him to sacrifice many aspects of himself that are now robbing him of a satisfying and fulfilling life and thus resulting in an undesirable identity and self-concept. Two potential counseling goals and interventions
- 6. Potential counseling goals that would benefit Lucas and improve his quality of life are goals that focus on meeting his needs. Much of his dissatisfaction stems from the self-sacrifice he has made for the betterment of his children and his neglect for self-care has cost him a tremendous amount in his professional and personal life. Helping him answer the questions of how to improve his life and what steps to take may alleviate some fear and doubt he may have (Laureate Education, 2013h). One goal in helping Lucas may to improve his self- concept and find meaning in life by integrating personal goals that help him to advance in life (Laureate Education, 2013h). One particular goal may be to address his concerns professional by brainstorming ways in which to advance. Helping Lucas run through scenarios and what they may look like and feel to him could elicit hope that will drive him to take the step in the direction that provides him purpose. Some goals could be going back to school, taking on my work responsibility, or fundraise for a new project. Another goal for counseling could be to increase personal control as a resilience factor to stress. Studies show that personal control is positively correlated to adjustment and well- being (Diehl & Hay, 2010). Considering the abundance of obligations, Lucas has, and the amount of distress he is experiencing, establishing personal control and healthy ways to implement personal control into his life may drastically improve his quality of life and physical and mental well-being. Healthier control will also contribute to a greater and more positive self- concept which may have a reciprocal effect on other domains of his life. Summary Adulthood is undoubtedly marked by tremendous development challenges. A complete and holistic understanding of adult
- 7. theories and developmental changes can improve case conceptualization when working with clients struggling with various issues that accompany adulthood.
