Presentation from DevGAMM Moscow 2016:
In this session we will talk about the playtest practices: what makes sense to use, when you develop an III or AAA project. How these practices are related to production stage and, most importantly, how to collect and interpret results.
This session will help you to succeed in playtest: one of the most important feedback tools.
My lecture for Games Gathering conference about production culture impact on Game Design, and the most common problems which game designer have to overcome during interaction with the team.
Play (innovation) games to gain clarity - Austin Agile Product SIGJeff Brantley
The business world of software and technology suffers from more than its share of confusing terms and acronyms... Unfortunately as Agile / Lean adoption grows we've seen an increase in messaging and a decrease in meaning. Come and share your experiences (as Jeff shares his) of people using/misusing words in the realm of Agile and Lean, Business and Marketing. We will play some games that help us get to clarity, but also may be used for you to educate your teams on what these words really mean. We will talk about the ramifications of this lack of understanding and get to more of the "why". We'll need all your help and wisdom as we learn through this one together, so come on out!
Developing your Agile skills through social GamesAgile Montréal
The end state of a highly performing Scrum team is described in the Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland as follow: ""when the values of commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect are embodied and lived by the Scrum Team, the Scrum pillars of transparency, inspection, and adaptation come to life and build trust for everyone"". Then the authors add: ""the Scrum Team members learn and explore those values as they work with the Scrum events, roles and artifacts."" We simply believe we can fast-track the development of these Agile core values through daily social games.
For the past three years, we have been experimenting with half a dozen of Scrum teams, offering opportunities to play a large variety of games (board games, card games, baby-foot, etc...) during the lunch hour and after hours. The results of this experimentation have quickly exceeded our expectations.

My talk delivered at the UK Test Management Forum on 2015-07-29. http://uktmf.com/?q=node/5283
As a test manager I don't test as much as I'd like to so I try to find ways to stay loose and ready for those occasions where I get the chance.
In this talk I'll describe one activity based on joking that I think can fit the bill. How? Well, the punchline for a joke could be a violation of some expectation, the exposure of some ambiguity, an observation that no one else has made, or just making a surprising connection. Jokes can make you think and then laugh. But they don't always work. Does that sound familiar?
It started with the weekly caption competition at Linguamatics where I noticed parallels in my approach to it and testing. For instance, I might take each of the key entities in the picture and "factor" them - generate a list of features, related concepts, synonyms and so on. In testing I might then look for overlapping factors for potentially interesting test ideas, in the quest for a caption I might try to use the same approach to find an ambiguity and hence a joke. Doing this, I've found analogies between joking and concepts from testing such as oracles, heuristics, factoring, stopping strategies, bug advocacy and the possibility that a bug, today, in this context might not be one tomorrow or in another.
I'm interested to find out from the audience what things they "just do" that they feel helps them.

Learn how to write strong headlines that engage customers, build brand and sell merchandise.
Writing great headlines is hard, but even if you’ve never written a headline, there are techniques that make it easier. Sarah Fletcher, Creative Director for Catalog Design Studios and Co-founder of Catalog University has been writing headlines for years. While there are some tips and tricks to writing a great headline, Sarah believes that proper focus and strategy are really the keys to success.
Why have headlines?
Headlines can engage, amuse, improve ease of shopping and serve many other functions. In this class Sarah explains why understanding what headlines can do is actually the blue print for how to approach writing them. She shares The Great Headlines Cheat Sheet. It’s a handy reference and shows the most common ways to approach writing a headline.
What makes a great headline?
Sarah shares some of her favorite headlines including some that made millions.
Process
Process is really the backbone of great headlines. Sarah believes that good process can greatly increase your likelihood of coming up with a great headline. She teaches how to use the Great Headlines Cheat Sheet to craft headlines and shares her own writing process. She explains how she determines what to focus on, and how she works through the process.
Practice
At the end of one of the most fun and engaging Pub Talks Cat-U has had, the pub goers practice writing their own headlines with smart, fun and creative results.
If you, or your team, have ever been stumped or stuck while writing headlines, this Pub Talk will teach you the secrets of good process and inspire you to have a great time, writing great headlines.
SharePoint projects are wickedly complex. Among the reasons: You are dealing with loosely defined big-picture issues like collaboration, information sharing, portal navigation and information organization; and you are trying to define these solutions within the context of the social complexity that exists in all organizations. The result is that you end up with solutions that may satisfy some of your stakeholders, but which leave others disengaged, disenfranchised and disappointed. Getting to success is dependent on reaching a shared understanding, followed by a shared commitment from all of the participants and stakeholders.
We have discovered that visual tools can very quickly allow groups of people to get to shared understanding and commitment. We will share our techniques with you and teach you how to use free or very inexpensive tools that allow you elicit your clients' goals. We then show you to prioritize, map and construct the solution.
We will cover the use of Gamestorming and Innovation Games, which use the concepts of games to get to serious results in a much less painless way than the usual planning and requirements workshops. We will demonstrate the use of mind mapping for navigational design, taxonomy design, prioritization and capturing the thought process of a team via an interactive process.

Leveraging eSports as a critical part of your development toolkitDevGAMM Conference
Al Yang, Bigpoint Games
eSports are commonly seen as an afterthought that should only be pursued after a competitive game reaches massive success. However, we believe that having the game played at the highest level during development would not only bolster our development but also viral outreach. This talk focuses on the development of Shards of War as a competitive game and how eSports was integrated as a critical part of the process. It will cover things like when it makes sense to start competitive play, at which level, how to jump start it, and what kind of data to look for.

Your Game is None of Your Business | Randall RobbinsJessica Tams
Delivered at Casual Connect USA 2016. How can you validate if your game is worth playing before you write a single line of code? How can you get people to sign up to play your game before a demo is even ready? How many units do you need to ship in order to pay for the initial development of your next game? How many signups do you need this month? The purpose of this talk is to take a step back and view the “Business” as being your product, not the game.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Custom Healthcare Software for Managing Chronic Conditions and Remote Patient...Mind IT Systems
Healthcare providers often struggle with the complexities of chronic conditions and remote patient monitoring, as each patient requires personalized care and ongoing monitoring. Off-the-shelf solutions may not meet these diverse needs, leading to inefficiencies and gaps in care. It’s here, custom healthcare software offers a tailored solution, ensuring improved care and effectiveness.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus
Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
