 Student of Socrates
 Plato is not a theist or polytheist, and he is certainly not a
biblical theist.
 Plato was a philosopher during the Classical period in
Ancient Greece, founder of the Platonist school of thought, and
the Academy, the first institution of higher learning in the
Western world.
BRIEF HISTORY

4. Platonic thinking is part of this
of reason in ancient Greece –
often called the Greek miracle.
It replaced superstitious,
religious, mythological,
supernatural thinking with
ration, scientific philosophical,
naturalistic thinking.

5. THEORY OF HUMAN NATURE
 The Tripartite Structure of the Soul (Having encountered the social
self Confucianism, the Divine of Hinduism, and no-self of Buddhism,
we come to dualism)
 Plato is a DUALIST, both IMMATERIAL MIND (Soul) and
MATERIAL BODY.
 He believed the soul exists before birth and after death.
 He believed that the soul or mind attains knowledge of the forms, as
opposed to the senses.

6. He started on the examination of the self
as a unique experience. The experience will
eventually better understand the core of the
self which he called PSYCHE.
Influenced by the wise pronouncements of Socrates,
Plato proposed his own philosophy of the self.

7. PSYCHE
Word for the place where your thoughts
come from.
Not your actual brain, but whatever it is
that generates all of your thoughts and
emotions.

pleasures, physical
satisfactions,
comforts, etc.
1. APPETITIVE ELEMENT

10. 2. SPIRITED ELEMENT
part of the psyche
that is excited when
given challenges, or
fights back when
agitated, or fights for
justice when unjust
practices are evident.

11. 3. MIND
- The most superior of all
the elements he called nous.
- NOUS is the conscious
awareness of the self. It
controls the affairs of the
self.
- It decides, analyses, thinks
ahead, proposes what is
best, and rationally
controls both the appetitive
and spirited elements of the
psyche.

12. EXAMPLE
 College students want to hang out with their
friends, spend time on computer games, eat
the favorite food, do thrilling activities that
will excite the whole gang.
 Satisfies the APPETITIVE ELEMENT

13. However, when professors throw
challenging projects and assignments that
would require tremendous amount of time
and effort.
SPIRITED ELEMENT kicks in to face the
challenges head on.

14. All these are going on because the
MIND or the NOUS is mobilizing
these pursuits according to the
quality of the NOUS a person has.
