Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828)
…Came up with the idea of phrenology
…Believed that size and shape of someone's head could determine their and intellectual and emotional characteristics
…You could feel someone's head and may be able to tell how good of a friend he could be or how good their memory was
John Locke (1632-1704)
…Mind is like a blank slate: written on by experience and reflection Tabula Rasa (white sheets)
Two types of experience: 1. External (sensation,) interaction with objects in the real world, including the color, motion 2. Internal (reflection) acts of the mind such as knowing, believing, remembering and doubting.
Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
…mental activities of humans and animals are fundamentally similar
…identified the presence in animals of "human" qualities such as courage and devotion, and "human" emotions, including pride, jealousy, and shame.

Sigmund Freud (1856—1939)
Developed new concept of human psyche…
 Id  Ego  Superego All three did different things
Id acts as pleasure principle NOW Wants everything NOW!!!
Superego wants perfection Controls Right Wrong feelings of right and wrong…
Then the ego acts as a referee for the id and superego Id Ego Superego
John Watson (1878-1958)
Big …promoter of behaviorism…
Wrote a book on how to raise children…
…Parents shouldn’t hug or kiss their children
Consequently… Two of his kids committed suicide and the third attempted…
Little Albert Study
Proved that you could teach babies to be afraid of things…
Watson taught little Albert to be afraid of loud noise and white and furry objects like a lab rat
