Soil is made up of three basic units: sand, silt, and clay. Clay is the smallest particle and feels sticky when wet, forming heavy soils. Silt is easily transported by water and forms river deltas. Sand is the largest particle, ranging from 1/16 to 2 millimeters, feeling rough with sharp edges and not holding many nutrients or water.
