Scott Deeter developed a process to produce human proteins like lactoferrin and lysozyme in genetically modified rice seeds to help treat childhood diarrhea and malnutrition. However, his efforts faced opposition from environmentalists, food safety activists, consumer advocates, rice farmers, and the California Secretary of Agriculture. They were concerned that GM rice could contaminate other crops and export markets, potentially harming public health and the rice industry in California.
