The document discusses the design process for a flower plant character that appears in a music video. Several early designs are attempted but fail for various reasons, such as giving the flower creepy or unsettling facial features. The final successful design features rounded eyes with a white highlight, dimples, and an open mouth with tongue to make the flower appear cute and happy. This design fits the intended representation of the couple's love and relationship.
2. •
at the end of our music video ‘raincloud vs. sunshine’ our 2
characters plant a seed in the ground. This seed the goes on
to grow into a flower. The flower is used to represent the
couples love and affection for each other. The can be seen as
a metaphor for their love, as both the male and female
character needs to help it grow. This is evident by the
moment when a sun shines on the seed, and a cloud rains on
it. It can also be seen as symbolization for a baby, as it takes
input from both of them to achieve this (again evident by the
sun and rain that pours onto the seed.
• As a result of this, the design for the plant had to be
perfect, as it represented so much. It had to be
cute, charming and have a likeable quality about it. While this
seemed like an easy task, in all truth it wasn’t. My plant
design went through many iterations until we got what design
ws best suited and ticked the afore mentioned requirements
3. • design one
• In this design we managed to get the shape and size of the
flower correct. The roots, stem, leaves etc were all
correct, but we were having trouble with the face. The plan
was to try and give it bright, happy sparkling eyes, but this
didn’t look well when put on the yellow background. It made
the flower look creepy, and gave its eyes an empty look. The
mouth was supposed to give a big happy smile.
However, combined with the eyes it only made the entire
plant look unsettling, a far cry from the intended plan.
4. • Design 2
• After reading up on old Disney films and how they manage to
put emotion into their animal characters, I decided to add
eyebrows to the design. This also, turned out to be a
failure, and it made the plant look very strange. The eye
design was wrong too, as (much like the other design) it made
the flowers face look soulless and empty. I also tried
implementing dimples to make the face look cuter and more
childish but this, combined with the other features I had
added, made the entire design very unsettling. This concept
was a failure too, much like the first one.
5. • Design 3
• After trying to add too many features to design 2, I when for a
simplistic approach for my third design. This time I added a
black outline to the eyes. This gave them more definition, and
didn’t make the flow look weird, like the other 2 designs.
Despite the success with the eyes, the mouth I designed
didn’t fit the bill. It made the entire face look like it was
smirking, which didn’t fit the image that I was going for.
6. • Final design
after many iterations and tweaks, I finally managed to
settle of the design of the flower. After experimenting with
various types of eyes and eyebrows in previous iterations, I
decided that these design would not work. I changed them
for long rectangles with rounded edges, and added a white
tint in the top corner of each one. This made the eyes seem
happy and cute, which is a big difference to other designs I
had done. The mouth was also changed considerably. I have
kept the dimples that I implemented in design 2, but have
made the mouth open. I have also given the mouth a
tongue, which makes the whole design seem a lot cuter.
Overall this is the perfect design for the flower, which will
help finish our music video on a strong point.
