This document discusses DNA barcoding for plants. It describes the process undertaken by the CBOL Plant Working Group to select standard plant barcodes. They evaluated 7 candidate plastid regions and ultimately recommended a two-locus barcode of rbcL + matK. This was due to matK having higher discrimination power than rbcL alone, though challenges remain in primer development and sequencing for matK. International collaborative projects are working to barcode various plant groups like trees, grasses, and plants in the Panama forest.
