2. FINAL FILM IDEA
For our final idea, we have decided to combine some of the idea’s from
each of our individual synopsis’.
-We have chosen the setting to be in a school as this is a place that every
teenager can relate to as they have all had a high school experiences.
-We have agreed that we will use cross cutting to build tension and leave
the audience wondering what is happening so they will want to continue
watching.
-We have also decided that there will be some sort of action (e.g. a fight)
3. FINAL SYNOPSIS
The scene starts with flashbacks of a young woman being taken away and
captured by three men all dressed in dark clothes with a black leather jacket.
All 3 men appear to be carrying some type of weapon (either a knife or gun)
and then a cutaway is used to show a very young girl crying as she is witnessing
her mother being taken away. Whilst this flashback is taking place, cross cutting
is used to show a teenage girl restlessly sleeping as she is remembering a
traumatic memory from her childhood. She then bolts upright breathing
heavily and sweating to the sound of a school bell ringing loudly.
4. …CONT INUED
It is then cut to the girl walking down the corridor at school being
bumped into causing her books to fall on the floor. A low angle shot is
used to show a group of girls looking down at her and they start to tease
her. The girl gets frustrated and swings for one of the girls and then runs
away out of the school and into the street. She continues to run until she
comes across an abandoned warehouse and shortly after hears a familiar
scream. She opens the door and gasps, the screen goes black, the scene
ends and the opening titles come up.
5. WHAT IS THE GENRE?
Teen thriller is the genre that we have chosen because we feel that we
could include things that teenagers would be interested in and could relate
to. Usually in the opening of a teen thriller, the opening of the film would
include action and even maybe some tension to grab the audiences
attention straight away. The type of music and sound that is going to be
used in our opening sequence is going to be loud and dynamic. This will
make the opening sequence more dramatic, build tension and grab the
audiences attention.
6. …CONT INUED
The conventions of this specific genre include the mise-en-scene as dark and
mysterious so that tension is built throughout the opening, which is important
because the audience needs to be gripped early on in the film so they will want to
continue watching the rest of the film. The characters should be dressed
appropriately to show what type of character they are in the film. For example, a
villain should wear dark colours like black or grey to represent things like death, evil,
darkness etc. which is how they are stereotypically presented. The hero should be
wearing more vibrant and uplifting colours such as white or yellow to represent the
good things in the film.
7. …CONT INUED
We chose to do a teen thriller because like the other medias, teenagers
can most likely relate to this genre and it’s something that they would find
interesting to watch. In the opening of a teen thriller, there is usually
some sort of action which is used to grab the audiences attention and too
reveal some of the plot of the film. Also, many different camera
shots/angles are used to build tension (for example hand held camera).
Also, over the head tracking shots are used to set the scene and make the
audience feel more involved with the action.
8. OPENING CONVENTIONS
At the start of our opening sequence we will include:
- editing techniques such as a cutaway
- violence/action
- mise en scene to be dark/mysterious
- sound of heavy breathing and screams
- camera shots e.g. establishing shots, low/high angles, close ups etc.
9. CHARACTER OR
NARRATIVE?
In our opening sequence we will use both character and narrative
as we believe both types will grip the audience and make it more
interesting to watch.
10. CHARACTERS
The characters that will be shown are:
- the young woman/mother
- the 3 men
- the group of girls
- the teenage girl (main character)
11. …CONT INUED
Our main character is a countertype of what the main character is
usually like as she is a female not a male. Females are usually seen to
be weak however in our opening sequence she is represented as a
strong, brave character dealing with a very traumatic issue. This may
be more interesting for the audience to watch as it is challenging the
typical stereotypes.
12. VISUAL STYLE
Mise en scene:
- props such as guns and knives, dull setting and clothing (dark
colours)
Camera:
- low/high angles, establishing shots, tracking shots, over the
shoulder shot etc.
13. …CONT INUED
Editing:
- shot reverse shot, cutaway, cross cutting, match on action etc.
Sound:
- diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, ambient sound, sound effects
(gun shots/bells) etc.
14. AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
By taking into account the feedback from our target audience, we
decided to set it somewhere in an urban area.
We have included some action to grip the audience’s attention
straight away and build tension.
We will include strong, powerful, tense music in the background.
The main character will be strong and brave, however, she will be
female, which is a countertype.
15. WHY IS IT UNIQUE?
Our final idea is unique as we have used both stereotypes and
countertypes of conventions in teen thrillers. This will make our
opening sequence more interesting than others, plus we have included
many things that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats,
wondering what will happen next.
