IMAGE 1 - They are school boys in Germany, during the rule of Hitler. The boys all have their right
hand saluted up in the air, just as Hitler did when he ruled. Also, they are in school uniforms.
IMAGE 2 – They are in war, the uniforms, gun, and stacked materials used for shelter again artillery.
IMAGE 3 – The men in coats, hats, suits, and smiling are law officials dumping out alcohol (they are
the only ones smiling and looking at the camera, acting proud of what they are doing) during
prohibition, and the poor, outraged men just staring at them in awe (not looking at the camera, looking
down, not dressed as nice). The brick road tells us that this is very old.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
IMAGE 1 – He was trying to convey the magnitude of persuasion and brain washing that Hitler had
over the people, especially the children.
IMAGE 2 – The terrible conditions of the men at war, and regardless of the conditions, the pride
visible on their faces.
IMAGE 3 – The men in charge loved every second of taking away a poor man’s drink, knowing that
they would have their own waiting for them at home, safe and sound.
Why is this photograph important to history?
IMAGE 1 – This was a very significant time period in history with world leaders and wars and mass
killings of people.
IMAGE 2 – This was an American involved war, with our young men risking their lives.
IMAGE 3 – Prohibition was a huge moment in American history, there were a lot of changes made,
and a lot of illegal things going on because of it.

dutifully or only because they were in fear?
