Who are the people in the photograph?
Individual
1. Four young German boys.
2. A group of military men that are overseas.
3. There are business men and then middle-class, or possibly lower-class, men.
Group
1. A family, maybe.
2. There is Adolf Hitler, a German boy, and two women.
3. A black protestor, the police with police dogs and some watchers
4. The statue of Liberty and a man.
5. A family.
6. Nazis and Jewish people.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo that tells you
this.
Individual
1. The four boys are riding bikes giving the Nazi Germany signal.
2. A group of military men are huddled around taking a picture. They are overseas in war. I can
tell because of the area around them, with what looks like sand so they may be close to an
ocean, and the sandbags that are stacked would be used for protection at the time.
3. The two groups, upper-class and middle or lower-class, are possibly pouring out alcohol. The
reason I think it is alcohol is because, by the clothes they are wearing and the photo being
black and white, that it may be around the time of the prohibition. The reason I classify them as
separate groups is because of the clothes they have on, both are very different.
Group
1. It looks like they are cooking and preparing food. Most of them have, what looks to be, aprons
on, and there are dishes everywhere.
2. Hitler is shaking the young boy’s hand, and the women in the back are excited/happy about it.
3. A protester is getting attacked by the police and police dogs. The dogs are snapping at the
man and one has his paints in its mouth.
4. The picture shows The Statue of Liberty and a noose hanging from the arm and a man
hanging from it.
5. The family is staring off putting all their attention on something.
6. It is a concentration camp and they are shaving all the hair so they will not get lice. I can tell
because the people with no shirts are so skinny and the man shaving is in a Nazi uniform.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Individual
1. Either trying to show happiness or possibly that all of Germany is behind Hitler.
2. A group of men with their friends, happy even though they are in war.
3. With the smiles on most of their faces they are happy about some event that happened.
Group
1. That the family is close knit, and helps out.
2. Probably that Adolf Hitler was not a bad person, propaganda.
3. Trying to convey what black people had to go through when they were trying to get Civil
Rights.
4. I think that the picture is trying to convey that African Americans are not welcome because
clearly a racist person made this.
5. That looks like the Statue of Liberty, so they may be looking for “the American dream”.
6. What they did to the Jews in those concentration camps.
Why is this photograph important to history?
Individual
1. With the time it was probably taken, there was a lot going on with Germany.
2. It can show us how those men felt, even though they are in war they are still smiling.
3. It is showing how some people rejoiced about prohibition, either the end or beginning of it.
Group
1. It shows how people lived and cooked before we had all the technology.
2. It shows propaganda, which could maybe perceive people and make them think Hitler was not
terrible.
3. It shows how terrible people were, and still are.
4. Again, it showed what people of color had to go through their entire lives, because people are
still like this.
5. It shows people what the people would look towards when wanting good for their family.
6. Because it is important to show what those people had to go through because of their religion.
