The candidate plans to photograph the Salford Quays in order to promote the area. They will take 50 photos but only select 10 for the final outcome. They are inspired by photographers who capture scenes during golden hour to showcase vivid colors. Specifically, they aim to depict the vibrancy of the Quays using techniques like slow shutter speeds to capture motion. Safety protocols like risk assessments will be followed for each shoot.

Project Proposal
(P2, P3, M2, M3, D2, D3)
Candidate
name:
Theme: Architectural Exploration of Salford Quays
Predicted final outcome
I’ll be carrying out a photoshoot on the Salford quays in order to produce landscape
photos that will aid in promoting it. By the end of the shoot I’ll have ideally captured 50
photos, however only ten of these will make it to the final selection. The outcome is to
hopefully have produced professional looking photos that meet the aim of the shoot.
Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)
2. I’d like the photos to ideally be taken during late afternoon/sunset- these are known as the
golden hours of the day since the lighting allows for a warm glow which brings out the
detail, texture and colouring in the images. By taking them at this time of day I’ll be
capturing the vividness of colour in the scenery which is an important factor for me,
therefore enhancing the beauty of the quays.
My influence comes from three separate ‘cityscape’ photographers- Will Pearson, Andrew
Prokos and Kate Brown.
Will Pearson’s takes his photos during late afternoons just moments before sunset is about to
begin; this allows for an overcast setting which in turn means softer lighting, therefore
creating more evenly lit images. The dramatized clouds are something that really appeals
to me within Will Pearson’s images; they add a certain interest to the photo that can’t be
found with a clear sky. His images influence me to take photos of the quays on an overcast
day at sunset in order to capture the texture and colouring of the sky. The use of a
panoramic setting allows us to see more of the city from a different perspective; however
this is something that I won’t be using. I personally believe that the images were taken at a
shutter speed of around 1/800 as to allow some light in without over exposing the image.
3. Andrew Prokos captures panoramic images of landscapes during sunset; this allows for
some of the most visually appealing photos. By taking the photos at sunset the lighting
allows for a golden glow on the images that otherwise wouldn’t be captured during the
day- this is something that I’d like to be apparent within my images. When taking photos of
a sunset it can act as a backlight for the scenery within the forefront, therefore creating a
silhouette effect; although Andrew Prokos has not used this particular technique, it’s
something that his images have inspired me to think about. Composition is clearly thought
about beforehand; the horizon is perfectly placed centred allowing for a unique contrast in
colours between the sky and building. When taking my photos I’d like the horizon to be in
the top third of the image, so that the scenery of the quays stays the main focus.
I’d like to use a fast shutter speed in order to allow for more rich and defined colouring- the
faster I make it the more of a silhouette I’ll be creating.
Kate Brown captures her images on overcast days when the skies are clear in order to
make the motion of the scenery the focus of the image. The use of a slow shutter speed
allows her to capture the blurred motion we see within the image, which in some ways is a
representation of the city she’s capturing- this is something I believe to be very unique that
I’d like to use within my own photos to show the vibrancy of the Salford quays. The only
negative point within the image for me is how over exposed the photo appears; if I was to
use this technique, I’d ensure that I was using a bigger f stop in order to expose the image
just right.
The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why
To produce the photographs I’ll be using my own Nikon D3100; this is a fairly basic beginner
DSLR that allows for professional looking images. The camera is accustomed to shoot in
most lighting meaning it has the ability produce the desired images I’m going after. A
resolution of 14.2MP allows for more detail and crisper images; due to this factor it allows
me to crop my images during editing and still have a good quality end product. It has the
ability to shoot in both automatic and manual mode; this means you have the capability to
4. control the three key settings- aperture, ISO and shutter speed. The camera consists of an
18-55mm lens built in with vibration reduction meaning it’s even easier to shoot at slower
shutter speeds- useful if I was to shoo on a fairly overcast day.
Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message
When thinking about the composition of my images, I’ll be using the rule of thirds in order to
make my photos more visually appealing and interesting to the eye. I’d ideally like some of
my photos to include the sun setting, however I do not want it to be the focus of the image
since the aim is to advertise the Salford Quays. Therefore, the horizon will be within the top
third of the frame as to not take attention away from focal point.
To capture images that include a silhouette, I’ll be using manual mode so that I have free
rain over the settings. Since I’d be facing the sun directly in order to capture this effect, a
slow shutter speed of around 1/100 will be required- any slower that 1-60 and I’ll need a
tripod. A large depth of field will be used so that my images are completely in focus, this
means I need to use an f-stop of f8 or higher.
If I was too slowly start increasing the exposure time to a faster shutter speed, I’d be
allowing for richer and more defined colouring in my photos. Colouring is of importance to
me, I believe it adds beauty and ambience to an image, therefore I want it to be apparent
within my photos; it needs to act as a representation of how much life there is at the quays.
The Salford Quays is home to MediaCityUK meaning it’s continuously busy and very vibrant-this
is something that I’d also like to put across in a few of my final ten images.
In order to capture motion during sundown, I’ll need to use a slow shutter speed and large
f-stop as to not over expose the image. I’d ideally like the focus of my image to be the
trams and cars in order to show both the vibrancy and accessibility of the quays; therefore
to make it more visually interesting I’ll be placing the focal points within then left had side of
the frame.

The Salford Quays is within walking distance of Manchester ship canal
and recently became home to MediaCityUK- It was one of the largest
regeneration projects in the UK. It’s home to both the Lowry Outlet
Mall, Imperial War Museum, Lowry Theatre, High Rise Apartments and
a variety of production companies. The creative industry plays a big
part and is therefore one of its main attractions.
