2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Shot: Medium long shot
Angle: Straight angle
Character: A “famous” girl singer
Costume: A cute dress or a skirt and a blouse. Her hair is natural.
Location: Outside in the nature. I will have a picture taken on
location because this is what my audience said that they would
prefer for the front cove, not a photo taken in a studio which is the
conventional way to take a front cover picture.
Props: None.
Pose: From the side, from the thigh and up.
Other: This photo will attract both the male and the female
audience. The female because she can be like a role model for
them and they will aspire to be like her, and the male audience
because of the male gaze.

Shot: Close up
Angle: Straight angle
Character: A “famous” girl singer
Costume: Her hair is simple and is not styled, it is
natural.
Location: In the nature or I will make it into a graphic
picture.
Props: None.
Pose: We do only see the upper part of her head. It is
cut under her nose. She looks straight into the camera.
Other: I am not sure if I will do like done on the photo I
have included and make it into a graphic picture or if I
will just leave it like it is. I will have the picture in a circle
frame. This will be original and something new that will
grab peoples attention. It will also be interesting for my
target audience since they care about design and
modern looks. The circle will also refer to the masthead
of my magazine which will also be a circle.

Shot: Medium close up
Angle: Straight angle
Character: A “famous” girl singer
Costume: A simple t-shirt in either black, white or grey. Her hair is
also simple and is not styled, it is natural.
Location: In a studio with a white background.
Props: None.
Pose: These photos will be like they are taken in a photo booth. She
will be doing different poses. For instance there will be one photo
with her just smiling and one with her doing a funny face. This will
make the audience feel like they know her and get to know a
different side of her. She is not just a famous person smiling on
every picture, she is a normal girl and she takes silly pictures as
well. The photos will be medium close ups because this is how
photo booth pictures most often are.
Other:The pictures will be in black and white. This will create more
simplicity to the pictures, since I am going to have several pictures
it might be a bit too much if they were going to be in colour. They
would take too much of the attention.

Shot: Medium close up
Angle: Low angle
Character: A female singer
Costume: A blue blouse and a black jacket. Her hair is brown and
natural.
Location: On a concert
Props: Microphone.
Pose: This photo will be a photo taken on a location while she is
having a concert so she is singing. She is holding the microphone.
Other: Since the photo is taken from a low angle it will represent
that she is powerful and knows what she is doing when she is
singing. She is a good singer and is in her right element when she is
singing.

Shot: Very long shot
Angle: Eye level
Character: A female singer
Costume: A blue dress and a red hat. Her hair will be natural.
Location: In the nature, on a beach.
Props: None.
Pose: This photo will be a photo taken on a location and it will be
her just standing there. She will not be looking in the camera.
Other: The fact that she is all alone in a big empty area represent
that she is independent and can do things her self. This fits well
when she is an indie music artist.

Shot: Long shot
Angle: Slight low angle
Character: Three girls from a “famous” girl band
Costume: They all have quite different clothes because the clothes
represent their personality. They are dressed casually with
jeans, hoodies and t-shirts. They all have long, blond hair which is
styled naturally.
Location: Out in the nature.
Props: None
Pose: They are all sitting on the ground. They are smiling and
having fun. It seems like they are just a group of friends out having
fun.
Other: The slight low angle will show that they are good at what
they are doing, they have power in this area. But the fact that they
are sitting will tell the audience that they are at the same level as
them, they are normal people as well.

Shot: Long shot
Angle: Low angle
Character: A man playing the saxophone
Costume: He will be wearing dark clothes, a bit dressy. His hair will
be grey and a bit long. He will have a beard.
Location: On a scene
Props: Saxophone
Pose: He will be playing the saxophone and will be looking like he is
really doing his best and concentrating.
Other: The slight low angle will show that he is good at what he is
doing, he has power in this area. His dark dressy clothes does
reinforce this by telling us that he is serious and cares about what
he is doing. The fact that he has grey hair tell us that he is old and
will therefore have loads of experience.

Props: None
Pose: None
Other: This picture will show a picture of a concert. It will contain
the audience, the scene, the light show and if you look closely, the
artist. The fact that it is taken from a high angle will emphasize the
amount of people that are there.

Shot: Medium long shot
Angle: Eye level
Character: A female singer
Costume: A cute dress and a cardigan. Her hair will be natural.
Location: In front of a colourful wall
Props: None
Pose: She will be standing straight up, smiling and looking into the
camera. It looks like someone just took a picture of her while she
was laughing and having fun.
Other: The colourful wall and the cute dress will represent that her
music is playful and fun. She is not a serious artist, she just want to
have fun. She really likes making music and is passionate about it.
This is reinforced by her smiling.
