3. PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Portraiture or better known as today as “Portrait”
Photography, is of a single person or group of people
that displays the expression, personality and mood of
the subject. The main focus of the photograph and
the main thing the photographer wants to show is the
persons face, although the background and full body
may be shown. Portraiture photography has become
very fashionable in the world of Social Media
(Instagram/Snapchat/Facebook) , but is also used for
Advertising and Photo fashion shoots.
The main reason for the photographer taking the
picture of just the persons face, is to give emphasis to
the persons face and to give emphasis to the photo
itself.This does not mean however that the persons
body, or background can not be included in the
photo.
The four key things a Portrait photographer needs to
consider when taking their picture is firstly ‘The
Constructionist’, when the photographer build a
certain ambience for the look of the image.
Secondly, ‘The Environmental approach’, which is
where the photo is being taken place and what is
surrounding them. Thirdly, ‘The Candid approach’,
where the photographer themselves decides if the
picture will be formal or informal (weather the model
will be looking at the camera or to the side). And
lastly ‘The Creative approach’, where the
photographer chooses to digitally manipulate the
image or add a filter over the image.

4. Portrait
This is a photograph of One Direction
member ‘Harry Styles’ which I found on
the website ‘getty,images’. This photo was
taken in particular by photographer Olivia
Salazar. (I could not find any information
about Olivia herself).
I really love this image because I like how
it is an un-staged photograph and is very
informal as he is turned slightly to his left
at an angle, and how the camera isn't
facing forward to capture his face directly.
But from looking carefully at this image,
we can see she has tried to capture the
emotion in his face and give the picture a
sense of the concerts atmosphere and the
adrenalin that him and the fans in the
audience are feeling.
Finally, she has edited this picture with a
black and white filter over it it exaggerate
his tattoos and other features in the
image. I think this is a good example of
portrait photography.

6. FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY
Fashion Photography is a type of photography devoted and
dedicated to displaying clothing and other items of fashion. Its
most used for Fashion magazines such as Vouge, Vanity Fair and
Elle.
Fashion photography became very popular around the 1850’with
photographer Adolphe Bruan produced a book containing 288
images of model Virginia Oldoin who later became the first ever
fashion model. Then later during the 1900’s, fashion photography
was first produced and shown in French magazines such as La
Mode Practique due to advances in half tone printing.
In fashion photography today, you usually won’t see a plain white
or off-white as the models are usually made up with dramatic
makeup with thick eye-liners and bright eye shadows. They also
use several lights to enhance the photo to make it more effective
and to make it stand out.
One popular style of fashion photography is ‘Still Life Fashion’
where clothes, footwear,jewellery and other accessories with the
absence of a live model. The main reason for this is for people to
focus on the product its self and not the model. Although fashion
photography is popular for having its models, Still Life
Photography has become very well know and is a big seller in the
marketing business.

7. Fashion
This is an example of Fashion Photography and how it was produced in
the early 20th century. This photograph in particular was taken by
famous photographer ‘Horst P Horst’.
Horst was born in on the 14th of August 1906 and his contribution to his
work lasted from 1931 to 1991. During this time, he became legendary
as a ‘one word photographic byline’, and his photographs in particular
became to be seen as synonyms showing elegance, style and glamor in
his work.
His first line of work was a full page spread of a picture of a typical
1930’s model elegantly holding up a bottle of perfume. This was first
published in the December issue of French Vouge in 1931. This may
have been his first piece of work to be published, but his first
breakthrough as a fashion and portrait photographer was in March of
1932 when a article showing variety of fashion studies and a three page
spread about ‘Sir James Dunn’ (an art supporter and supporter of
Surrealism) was published in an issue of ‘British Vouge’.
After analysing his work and contributions to Fashion Photography, I
noticed in some of his other photographs he focuses on many of the
models different body parts (ect. hands,legs face). I like how he focuses
his photographs of many of the different body parts of the model
because it shows that the main of the image is to not only advertise the
product, but for also the public to see the model.
The main reason I chose this particular picture to annotate was because
the model really shows what Horst P Horst images really represent what
a typical 20th century women would look like.
I really like how he has used a off white background to really exaggerate
the models dress, jewellery and facial features. This technique is rarely
used in todays fashion magazines.
I also love how in the picture, they have used a prop of a white flower.
The model in the picture is wearing a black strapless dress with a netted
bottom and pointed shoes. From this picture, Horst was trying to
represent the elegance and grace the women had in this photograph. It
could also be shows as to how women in the 1930’s should act and
dress.

9. LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
Landscape Photography shows spaces within the world that
typically capture the presence of nature or man-man
features. This particular style of photography is done for
many reasons such as to recall personal experiences and
observation whilst in the ‘great outdoors.
The most common setting for a Landscape Photograph
would be taken is a rural or urban setting, industrial and
nature.
In many photographs like these, human activity is almost
never seen due to the photographers not wanting to disturb
nature and not create a human influence and to preserve the
natural environment.
The techniques used when taking a photograph like this is
you need a good natural light and a good positioning of what
angle you are going to take your image.
Zoom your camera lens out as much as you can so you can
capture as much of the area as possible to make an
exaggerated atmosphere. Make sure to uses a wide angled
lens to grasp all of the landscape in the image. And
finally,use a big depth of field to get as much focus in as
possible to make sure that your image isn't blurry.

10. LANDSCAP
E This is an example of a landscape picture taken with
a black and white filter. This photo in particular was
taken by famous photographer ‘Ansel Addams’.
Ansel Adams was born on the 20th of February 1902
becoming an American environmentalist and
photographer.Many of his black and white landscape
photographs of the American West (especially
Yosemite National Park) have now be widely
reproduced on calendars, posters and even books.
As being a nature photographer and environmentalist
, Adams spent a large part of his career in commercial
photography but is now best known for his landscape
photos.
In the early 1920’s, he decided to become a full time
professional photographer and at that time some of
his work was published in many limited addition
collections. Some of these include, ‘Parmelian Prints
of the High Sierras (1927) and Taos Pueblo (1930).
Personally, I really like this picture and is my favourite
of Addams work. This is a picture of a road in the
Nevada Desert taken in 1960.
I really like how this image shows a good example of
perspective balance, and how the background is
really exaggerated and almost dramatic and makes it
look as if the road running directly through the shot is
carrying on forever.
Also, from this image being taken with a black and
white filter makes certain parts of the picture really
stand out. For example, the pitch black desert is
separated from the sky by the horizon. Addams tried
to focus on the contrast on the picture trying to make
the white in the clouds and the road look bright and
bold to soften the dark in the image.

12. EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY
Wedding Photography is the photography of
different activities relating to weddings. Many photographs show
the couple either before the wedding getting ready, coverage of
the
wedding itself, features of the wedding (Flowers, rings , table
decorations)
and the wedding reception.
Wedding photography started to develop and grow since the
invention ‘Photographic Art’ in 1826. In many of the early days
of
photography, the Bride and Groom didn’t hire a wedding
photographer to record any of the wedding. But during the
middle of the 19th century, most couples would not stand formal
for a photo. They would much rather pose for a photograph after
the wedding in their formal clothes. Luckily, during the mid
1960’s, couples would start hiring photographers during the
wedding to take formal photos of them in their wedding outfits.
There are two different types of Wedding photography;
Traditional and Photojournalistic. Traditional photography
provides a more classically posed images and a ‘great deal of
photographer control’.
Photojournalistic photography is taken in a more reparative
style and focuses more on candid images. Wedding
photojournalists typically shoot images quickly use whatever
lighting is available or on-camera flash rather than using
traditional, formal posing techniques and studio lights.

13. EVENT
This is a perfect example of a picture taken of a
bride getting ready before a wedding. This photo in
particular was taken by wedding photographer Brian
Kraft.
I could not find out any history information about Kraft,
but i did learn that he has his own photography business
‘Brian Kroft Photography Studio’ set up in Denver ,
Colarado.
He also does portrait photography, family, business ,
commercial photography and fine art.
I chose this image because i think its the perfect photo to
be taken at a wedding. I like the way it was taken with a
black and white filter so you can see just the silhouette of
the bride (and the brides mother and head bridesmaid?).
The contrast of the white background softens the image
and gives a pretty natural lighting in the foreground of the
image.
I also love how Kroft has managed to capture the detail in
the brides dress, and the shadow of her dress pooling
around her.
