Ecological
Devastation
Ecological Devastation
This is the deterioration of the environment
through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil;
the destruction of ecosystems; habitat destruction;
the extinction of wildlife; and pollution. It is defined as any
change or disturbance to the environment perceived to be
deleterious or undesirable.
2
Ecological Devastation
As indicated by the I=PAT equation, environmental
impact (I) or degradation is caused by the combination of an
already very large and increasing human population (P),
continually increasing economic growth or per capita
affluence (A), and the application of resource-depleting and
polluting technology (T).
3
Ecological Devastation
4
We humans, is a big factor why ecological devastation
is happening, such as, pollution is everywhere because of the
cars that’s running everyday, because of the companies
making something that people need or want, another is, a lot
of trees are cut to be used in building houses and have a
bigger area to build houses, trees are also cut to become
things that we need, like cabinets, bed, papers and a lot more.
Ecological Devastation
5
Since we are one of the biggest factor, if not the biggest
among all of the factors, of ecological devastation, we can also
be one of the biggest factor in restoring it. Like now, since a lot
of people in the world is in lockdown and factories are closed,
pollution in the air was lessen and the ozone layer is healing.
This shows that if we will do our best to restore our environment
and start it at home, our simple acts can go a long way.
Being a Teacher
We can also see this problem in the classroom, such as
students who are losing their desire to study or disliking certain
subjects, these problems may be because of the people in their
environment, maybe they lose their desire to study because
they’ve been told that they’re not good or they wont succeed,
others might use these words to strive more but others might
take this negatively.
6
Being a Teacher
Students may not like the subject since they’re having a
hard time dealing with the subject or they find the teacher so
strict they end up not listening and hating the subjects since they
don’t have a good knowledge about it. As a teacher, we can inspire
the students to keep learning by showing them what they can be in
the future or by sharing stories that may enlighten them to keep
studying and use negative words as fuel to strive hard in studying.
7
Being a Teacher
We can also encourage the students to learn about the
subject by explaining thoroughly and give them examples that
activities that will make them interested, in that way they wont
hate the subject anymore.
Things that are caused by humans
can be solved by humans too,
by working hand in hand,
we can achieve the goal we desire. 8
Fake news
Fake news
10
Fake news (also known as junk news, pseudo-news, alternative
facts, fabricated news or hoax news) is a form of news consisting of
deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional news
media (print and broadcast) or online social media. Fake news is
written and published usually with the intent to mislead in order to
damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially or
politically.
Fake news
11
This is often using sensationalist, dishonest, or outright
fabricated headlines to increase readership. Digital news has
brought back and increased the usage of fake news. The news is then
often reverberated as misinformation in social media but
occasionally finds its way to the mainstream mediaas well. If fake
news has no concern for the truth at all, there it would be a form
of bullshit as defined by the philosopher Harry Frankfurt.
Fake news
12
An analysis by BuzzFeed found that the top 20 fake news
stories about the 2016 U.S Presidential Election received more
engagement on Facebook than the top 20 election stories from 19
major media outlets. Anonymously-hosted fake new websites lacking
known publishers have also been criticized, because they make it
difficult to prosecute sources of fake news for libel.
As a teacher
13
Fake news is all over the internet, now that internet or social
media is what we use in reading news and updates, we much be
responsible enough to check whether the news is fake or not before
sharing it. We must check if the sources is reliable but if the source
is not familiar and it looks so real, we must look for something that
can support it and prove it that its true. A single fake news may
lead to a lot of misunderstandings, issue or problem.
As a teacher
14
Teaching the students wrong information or lesson may
cause series of misunderstanding to the following lessons, so as a
teacher, we must see to it that we are teaching the students the
right lessons and the right way how to solve or construct
something. Fake news is also present on school issues such as a if
something is lost, students might accuse someone but before
believing, this must be investigated, clarified and with evidence.
As a teacher
15
One example of misinformation is using the word
“transpose” in mathematics when transferring a certain value or
variable to the other side of the equal sign, where in fact it should
be “using Addition/Subtraction Property of Equality”. Students were
using transpose even until college without knowing that they are
using the wrong word and may cause confusion to some students
when another topic will be tackled. Thus, being a teacher, we must be
careful on what we taught to the students, it must be correct.
16
Extra-judicial
killings
Extra-judicial killings
18
An extrajudicial killing (also known as extrajudicial
execution) is the killing of a person by governmental authorities or
individuals without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal
process. Extrajudicial killings often target leading political, trade
union, dissident, religious, and social figures. This is one of the loud
issues in the Philippines during President Duterte’s war on drug
project. Many we’re killed during raids and operations.
Extra-judicial killings
19
This process doesn’t give the person who’s killed to defend
himself. There are a lot of people who were killed without any
confirmation if they were selling or using drugs. Since a lot of
killings happened, there were some situations that people introduced
themselves as police even if they’re not and killed people on their
home and leaving the blame to the policemen. Because of extra-
judicial killings, a lot of people took advantage and kill people
because of their own motive since killing is rampant already.
As A teacher
20
This situation may happen in a classroom if a teacher will
fail a students without any process such as informing the student,
letting him/her comply the requirements or giving him an allotted
time to do things he needed, this action is the same with extra-
judicial killing since the teacher is giving judgement without any
legal process happened.
Global Warming
Global warming
22
Global warming means surface temperature changes; it is the
slow increase in the average temperature of the earth’s
atmosphere because an increased amount of the energy (heat)
striking the earth from the sun is being trapped in the atmosphere
and not radiated out into space. Over the past 50 years, the average
global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded
history. And experts see the trend is accelerating.
Global warming
23
The earth’s atmosphere has always acted like a greenhouse to
capture the sun’s heat, without our atmospheric greenhouse the earth
would be very cold. from a terrible cooling event that took place some
1,500 years ago. Two massive volcanic eruptions, one year after another
placed so much black dust into the upper atmosphere that little sunlight
could penetrate. Temperatures plummeted. Crops failed. People died of
starvation and the Black Death started its march. As the dust slowly fell
to earth, the sun was again able to warn the world and life returned to
normal.
Global warming
24
Here are some of the documented impacts of the warming by the
scientists:
✔ Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. This
includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica
and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.
✔ Sea-level rise. Global sea levels are rising 0.13 inches (3.2
millimeters) a year, and the rise is occurring at a faster rate in
recent years.
Global warming
25
✔ Rising temperatures are affecting wildlife and their habitats.
✔ As temperatures change, many species are on the move. Some
butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have migrated farther north or to
higher, cooler areas.
✔ Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the globe, on
average. Yet some regions are experiencing more severe drought,
increasing the risk of wildfires, lost crops, and drinking water shortage.
In the future, if the warming will continue, earth will no longer be conducive
for living.
As A teacher
26
We can relate these to our learning environment, which is our
classroom or our school. If the number of students will continue to
increase yet the classroom size will remain the same, in the future,
these classrooms will no longer be conducive for learning,
especially if this will be too small for the number of students and it
is not well ventilated. Students will not be able to concentrate and
give their attention, especially now that students have so low
attention span.
As A teacher
27
To maintain the earth as a living place for human, we must
work hand in hand to stop or slow down global warming, as well as in
the classroom, if we want to have a conducive for learning
environment, we must maintain a child friendly, well lighted and
well ventilated classroom.
Assessment
Choose 1 among the ethical dimensions (ecological
devastation, fake news, extra-judicial killings or global
warming) and relate this to education by giving an
example or situation.
