Two key areas of growth will be discussed: 1) Key policy issues in the development of the Seattle's Stormwater Code requirement for use of GI to the “maximum extent feasible” for projects on private property and right-of-way, and 2) public engagement success, failures, and proposed approach in moving forward in installing GI in public and private places, including a look at using GI to assist with combined sewer overflows.

On May 20, 2010, Mary Raulerson of Kittelson & Associates held a workshop in Portland, OR which introduced and illustrated best practices in the field of Complete Streets using case studies she has been directly involved with around the country. During the workshop, special attention was given to the obstacles that had to be overcome and the solutions that worked. The goal of this session was to help identify and tailor practices that will further strengthen the region’s move toward creating, connecting and complimenting great places with great multimodal rights-of-way.

Sustainable Transport Best Practices andBarry Wellar
The 2007 Fleming Lecture begins with a brief review of Canada’s progress in achieving core element standing for geographic factors in sustainable transport best practices. This part of the paper grounds sustainable transport in metropolitan regions, and then establishes the essential role of geographic factors in the sustainability of transport systems in Canada, and particularly in its metropolitan transportation systems. With that foundation in place, the paper then presents findings that reveal the extremely limited implementation of nine sustainable transport best practices in Canada’s metropolitan regions, and the consequent lack of regard for geographic factors in matters related to achieving sustainable transport practices.
Organic Urbanism: human-oriented design for metropolisesOleksandr Galychyn
Abstract
Existing theories of sustainable development have failed to address three common structural elements of the
human-oriented transportation system: healthy neighborhoods, Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) connected
by integrated public-soft transportation network. The newly emerged conceptual model for zero-emission and zerowaste
urban design named Green Urbanism like the previous theories has failed to develop those three structural
elements of organic city.
In this paper approaches regarding the successful integration of soft transportation to the transit network will be
discussed. Secondly, the best physical standard for TOD will be determined by comparing TODs in Japan, Denmark,
Ukraine and Turkey by socio-economic indicators of each TOD type. Finally, the concept of healthy neighborhood
will be developed based on the Lehmann’s healthy community&district definitions, concept of human oriented
transportation, and the latest eco-mobility study from Barcelona. Thus, new conceptual model for sustainable city
will be proposed.

Better Streets – What Really Works?
I think about Shared Space?
So..what do we know about Shared Space?
Phil Jones
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
3. What is Shared Space?
LTN 1/11
Sharing: The ability and willingness of pedestrians, facilitated by the
sympathetic behaviour of motorists and others, to move freely around
the street and use parts of it that, in a more conventional layout, would
be considered largely dedicated to vehicular use.
In the UK, it is usually applied to links and minor junctions with the aim
of allowing pedestrians to move more freely within the space.
Er…is that it?
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
4. What is Shared Space?
Manual for Streets 2
With less or no traffic management, or clear indication of priority,
motorists are encouraged to recognise the space as being different
from a typical road and to react by driving more slowly and responding
directly to the behaviour of other users (including other motorists) rather
than predominantly to the traffic management features.
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
5. When does a space
become shared?
Decreasingly segregated
Guardrails Conventional Low kerbs, Level Surface,
kerbs, different common material Minimal/No
materials delineation
Increasingly shared
Increasingly cooperative
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
12. What are the benefits?
There is sufficient evidence to suggest that well-designed schemes in
appropriate settings can bring benefits in terms of visual amenity,
economic performance and perceptions of personal safety.

20. “This Local Transport Note (LTN) is mainly
concerned with the use of shared space on
links.”
So let’s talk about links...
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
21. What do we know about...Links?
Reducing the degree of segregation between users
produces slower traffic, more pedestrians using whole of
the space – MVA Research.
But...
Getting drivers to cede to pedestrians on links is difficult

25. And if the scheme looks pretty conventional...
City Beach, Southend
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
44. And what do we know about...Junctions?
• Queues and delays can reduce when controls are removed/reduced
• Drivers are more willing to cede priority at junctions
But:
• Junctions without any traffic rules are very difficult to model.
Phil Jones Associates sustainable transport solutions
55. Conclusions
Shared Space schemes in the UK are generally working
well, and
Can be applied to both links and busy junctions
Which have different characteristics and requirements
In many cases, some form of median or crossing will be
needed if we want drivers to cede priority
More research needed on linkage between behaviour and
environment
