3. The Lunar Cycle
• The Moon revolves around the
Earth once every 29 days.
4. When less than half of the moon is lit by
the sun, it is called
Waxing Crescent Waning Crescent
CRESCENT.
5. Waxing essentially means "growing"
or expanding in illumination;
Waning means "shrinking" or
decreasing in illumination.
6. When more than half of the moon is lit
by the sun, it is called
Waxing Gibbous Waning Gibbous
GIBBOUS.
7. happens when the moon is at a
90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun.
An exact half of the moon is illuminated and half in
shadow.
First Quarter Third Quarter
HALF MOON
12. Waxing Gibbous
• More than half of the
moon appears lit by
the sun.
• The waxing
gibbous phase
occurs between the
first quarter and full
moon phases.
13. Full Moon
• The moon is in one
side of the Earth
and the sun is in
the other.
• A lunar eclipse can
only happen at full
moon.
14. Waning Gibbous
• The other half of the
moon is lit by the sun
and we see it looking
like a little less than a
full circle.
• The waning
gibbous phase
occurs between the
full moon and third
quarter phases.
15. Third Quarter
The left half of the moon
appears lit and the right
side of the moon appears
dark.
17. The phases are divided into
4 groups or quarters :
- new moon
- first quarter
- full moon
- third/last quarter
18. Tides
• The rising and falling of water,
at the seashore.
• Occurs every twelve or more
than hours.
19. SPRING TIDES
When the sun and moon are
aligned, unusual high and low tides
are observed.
20. NEAP TIDES
When the moon and the sun are
right angles with Earth, tides are
moderately high and moderately
low.
21. Factors causing
Tides:
1. Rotation of the Earth
2. Gravitational attraction
between Moon and Earth.
3. Gravitational attraction
between Sun and Earth.
22. Blue Moon
• is an additional full moon that appears in a
subdivision of a year: either the third of four full
moons in a season,
• or a second full moon in a month of the
common calendar.

Editor's Notes
The moon orbits around the Sun every 29 days or one month.
By percentage, ¾ of the moon is shadowed and ¼ of it is by the sun.
In waxing, the part of the moon being lit increases as days passes by. From less than the half to more than half of the moon until it Full Moon.
In waning, the part of the moon lit by the sun decreases. From more than half of the moon to less than half of it up to New Moon.
During the New Moon, the moon is positioned in between the sun and the Earth allowing no light from the sun to be illuminated from Earth.
