Oil is stored in porous and permeable rocks underground. Petroleum engineering combines scientific and practical methods to discover, extract, transport, process, and refine oil from reservoirs to final products. Oil is a mixture of organic compounds called hydrocarbons that are insoluble in water and formed from the remains of ancient organisms buried under heavy layers of sediment. Exploration uses geophysical methods and mapping to determine the subsurface rock layers and formations that may contain oil and gas reserves. Drilling engineers create wells to extract fluids from reservoirs using drillstrings and systems to rotate, lift rocks and fluids, circulate drilling fluids, and prevent blowouts. Production engineering transports resources from reservoirs through facilities to refine and process oil and gas into commercial products like fuel

EPCAMR’s recent mapping effort has reasonably found that almost 9 billion gallons of mine water resides in storage in 10 mines in the Southern Field and approximately 435 billion gallons in all the Northern Field. This associated report attempts to build on previous investigations to locate and quantify large volumes of water existing in underground mine voids, known as Mine Pools, in the Southern and Northern Anthracite Coal Fields of Eastern Pennsylvania. The goal of this project was to produce 3D Modeling of Eastern Pennsylvania Anthracite Mine Pools in Earthvision to Improve Water Quality Restoration and AMD Treatment via Consumptive Use Mitigation Projects in the Susquehanna River Basin. What is Midstream Oil and Gas?
As its name implies, the midstream oil and gas segment encompasses facilities and processes that sit between the upstream and downstream segments. Activities can include processing, storage and transportation of crude oil and natural gas.
In most cases, oil and gas reserves are not located in the same geographic location as refining assets and major consumption regions.
Transportation is a big part of midstream activities and can include using pipelines, trucking fleets, tanker ships, and rail cars.
