American Chemical Corporation Case Summary
Introduction:
1) This report considers the potential purchase of the sodium chlorate producing plant in Collinsville,
Alabama by Dixon Corporation from American Chemical Corporation in October 1979. The reason
for this stems from the fact that American Chemical Corporation was attempting at the time to buy a
controlling stake in Universal Paper Corporation, but the management of Universal contested this on
the basis that it would be anti competitive, given that they were both producers of sodium chlorate.
The US government supported Universal in this belief and in order to prevent court action American
had to agree to divest its sodium chlorate producing plant in Collinsville, Alabama. As of October of
1979 Dixon has agreed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2) Assumes cash flows are reinvested at a hurdle rate specified by Dixon, which accounts for the
required rate of return on the project given its risk profile (unlike the IRR, where cash flows are
assumed to be reinvested at the IRR).
3) Takes account of the time value of money by discounting the cash flows back to the present period,
with higher weightings given to more recent cash flows.
4) This discounting is done using our specified hurdle rate, ensuring that the discounted value
accounts for the required return on the project.
Now that we have determined that NPV is to be our evaluation method for the plant we need to
calculate a discount rate (or hurdle rate) for the plant based on its risk profile.
Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC)
11) In calculating a discount rate for this firm we need to ask Is it to be cost of debt, cost of equity, or
a weighted average of the two in a cost of capital? The financing for this project is 100% debt so the
initial thought is to use cost of debt as the discount rate. However we believe this to not be the correct
approach. Debt as at October 30, 1979 (prior to the proposed acquisition) was $1,000,00) while
Stockholder s Equity was $14,718,000. So equity makes up a substantial amount of the

Examples Of African-American Masculinity
At the present time, there seems to be a blurred line between ideal and practiced masculinities. Across
different cultures and even ethnicities, the definitions of masculinity tend to differ, hence the plurality
of masculinity. For example, the stereotype of the Latino male centers on machismo , the display of
strong and aggressive masculinity (Masculinities 1: Ethnic Identities and Men s Ways of Being),
whereas African American s masculinities developed a masculine gender identity known as the cool
pose, which enhanced their social competence, pride, dignity, self esteem, and respect (Masculinities
1). Even though the experience of each individual person may have been different, it is evident that
both of these expressions of masculinity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not surprisingly, the article analyzes the differences between men who are womanizers and ones who
are gentleman. This article was written in response to the author, Laura Merten s, experiences
regarding the collateral damage caused by masculinity in the United States. In this article, she
highlights her desired characteristics in a gentleman. In other words, she is describing her ideal
characteristics of masculinity. Some of those characteristics include, Love, understanding,
vulnerability, respect, loyalty, and concern (Merten). Interestingly, these traits are all qualities one
would look for in a best friend. In reality, men seem not to focus on the aspects, in which women
desire, but the socially constructed aspects, sought out for men s approval. First of all, this inherently
demonstrates the lack of respect devoted to women. Additionally, this desire for men s approval only
reinforces the continuous cycle, which devalues and even dehumanizes

Armada Portrait Analysis
Elizabeth I, queen of England, was very strategic in the way she presented herself to the public. In my
short story, The Queen s Decision, Elizabeth s public and private selves are evident and occasionally
contrast with each other, especially during the decision to execute Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.
Publicly, the Tudor queen had a strong aversion to beheading Mary Stuart, but her personal insights
depict hostility to the fellow queen.
Elizabeth sitting on a throne made of silk from Asia, in reference to England s colonial power. The
Armada portrait was a public display to spread a positive image of the queen as propaganda and to
showcase the Tudor queen s strength. Similar to Elizabeth s Armada portrait in which she places her
hand on the globe (particularly North America), Elizabeth is placed directly on colonized land (Asian
silk), portraying England s power over other nations. In this instance, Elizabeth s publicly
demonstrates her power and her physical embodiment of England in a subtle, meaningful way.
Furthermore, Elizabeth is dressed in a gold and white gown with pearls lining the bodice, inspired by
the Armada portrait again. Dubbed as the virgin queen, white and pearls are both indicative of
virginity and chastity, with gold being symbolic of wealth. Also, pearls are linked with the moon, an
entity that is difficult to reach and having immense influence over others, similar to Elizabeth herself.
Having pearls line the bodice, where the heart and stomach designate the inward seat of passion,
emotion, secret thoughts, affections, or feelings, (OED) illustrates Elizabeth s ability to restrain her
biological urges. Elizabeth s natural body intersects with the body politic, in that her natural body is
utilized to present a political ideal of her being in control.
William Cecil mentions Mary s plots against Elizabeth, notably the three major plots she is suspected
of committing during her imprisonment in England. The Ridofli Plot, The Throgmorton Plot and the
Babington Plot are the three times Mary attempted to kill Elizabeth, with her involvement in the
Babington Plot leading to her execution.
In Elizabeth s letter to William Cecil, April 11, 1572, she doesn t want to rush any irrevocable

Science Has Been An Interest Of Mine
Science is something that happens every day. Science can be many different things as well.
Throughout my life, science has been an interest of mine. Asking questions, finding out how
something works, or how something is made. When I was in grade school, I don t remember having
any science classes. I do remember doing different experiments at home with my parents though. The
one thing that I loved to do was mix baking soda with vinegar and watching its reaction. This was a lot
of fun for me because it was very interesting to try and understand why both items that are used with
food and cooking, when mixed together would do something so cool. When I got older and into
middle school/high school, was when all of the cool science classes started. We learned about the
different elements on the periodic table and we got to take a tour of the science lab and all of the
fundamentals within it. The teacher showed us all of the different measuring tools and containers, the
ways to be safe in the lab like eye goggles and all of the emergency wash stations. We also got to see a
glass cabinet of a bunch of preserved animals. He explained that the animals were in formaldehyde
and also told us some of the stories behind the animals. One was a really small horse and that was
donated to the school from one of the locals because their horse had ended up having a miscarriage.
There were frogs and snakes and even bunnies and kittens. Another interesting one was a baby deer
that was also

Similarities Between Paleli And Israeli Conflict
Even though the Northern Ireland and Palestine Israel conflicts occurred on opposite sides of the
world, between vastly different cultures and in different social, political and economic contexts there
are striking similarities and differences in the root causes of their conflicts. With reference to various
authors, this essay will discuss the similarity of these root causes similarities such as land disputes,
nationalism, refugee problems and ideological contentions. This essay will also discuss the differences
between the conflict, such the duration and resolve of each conflict. The ideological disputes in

This was a result of the Balfour declaration, which promised a homeland to the Jews and vowed to
protect the rights of non Jewish people in Palestine. While Britain kept control over Palestine,
remaining states such as Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria gained independence. The Balfour
declaration essentially triggered a Zionist movement and encouraged Jews to migrate to Israel altering
the demographics of Palestine, as Arabs had previously been the majority population. As conflict
between the Arab and Jewish population started emerging, the Irgun emerged as a Jewish guerrilla
force. Eventually the British withdrew after World War 2 in 1948 and left Israel more land than agreed
on under the UN plan and this enforced the repositioning of thousands of Palestinians. In response, the
Arab nations rejected the state of Israel and its claims over Palestine and conflict was physically
ignited in the 1956 Israel invasion of Sinai. This demonstrates how the violent conflict between the
Arab and Jewish communities is largely caused by the political and social contentions of the

Norway, Cuba, And Jamaica
My country s populations that I will inform about are Norway, Cuba, and Jamaica. Norway is in
Northern Europe on the western and northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Cuba is a part of the
Caribbean Sea, west of Haiti across the Windward Passage on and south of the Bahamas. Jamaica is
island in the Caribbean Sea, which is the third largest island of the Greater Antilles. These countries
have very diverse cultures and populations due to many factors in each country.
Norway has a population rate is about 1.3%, which means there is growth also known as surplus. The
northern parts of the country are home to two main groups of the population of Sami with a different
language and cultural traditions. The Gypsy population also is a part of the homogeneous population,
which are both smaller populations. In the late twentieth century, the country let immigrants come in
from other countries. The Norwegian people have a population of four million and they also promote
cultural sharing. About 90 percent of the immigrants belong to the Evangelical Lutheran state church.
Then the other five percent are members of other faiths and only five percent have no religion. Also,
Constitutional monarchy is Norway s government type and the capital city is Oslo. The higher the
education in America is greatly over religion to most people. In the Norwegian immigrant community
the Lutheran church has their education in a Christian spirit. They do this by having established

Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans
The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave
England. They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop, land
of milk/honey(4). Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to reveal how
the Puritans consider themselves. The Old Testament Israelites, references specifically the Israelites
that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt had become so
numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into slavery. The Israelites
eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to land God had gifted
them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they too felt some religious
persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many executed. The Puritans
also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton himself tells the Puritans
that they are God s chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites inspire the Puritans to get
away. The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was to the Rolling Stones a
source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2). Vowell uses an analogy to compare two unlike
things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of music originating in the Deep
South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The emotion

Although the sexual assault covertly taking place was not directly affecting Dominic, he was still
unquestionably troubled. Courtney E. Ahrens, and Rebecca Campbell conducted a survey of 60
friends of adult rape victims; out of all the participants, 96.6% felt angry at the perpetrator, 71.7% felt

abuse in their friends experience these emotions, but few act on it; Dominic s first violent gesture was
just that. John

Background of the Catholic Church Essay
Background
In the Western world, the schism within the Catholic Church has made its most significant impact due
to rapid changes in social standards. Of greatest importance is the evolution of modern society and
their response to the reverberated traditions of the Catholic Church as well as the evolving Protestant
sects. In consequence of increases in technology and science, modern society has redefined its
acceptable and moral behavioral standards within a social setting, whereas, the Catholic Church stands
firm in its doctrines despite social and moral movements in the twentieth century. Except for the
Second Vatican Council and the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic Church has not worked to
revise its religious traditions in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I don t believe that religious conversions need to take place, rather religious communication and
understanding. The intolerance perpetuated by Catholicism is a feeling that I had at one point
entertained in accordance with my Church s attitude. It is only now, after exploring other religious
services, I realize the ignorance that intolerance perpetuates and I have grown spiritually from this
revelation.
Upon these grounds I propose that it is reasonable and necessary to draw parallels between Protestant
and Catholic religious services as a start to narrow the gap between Catholics and Protestants. It is in
this acknowledgment of apparent similarities in worship that Protestants and Catholics would be able
to appreciate each other for what they believe both religiously and socially. Whether or not people
realize this point, religion even while separated from the state, influences how each individual
approaches and interacts with another. The split between religion and state widened a gap within
humanity. By fostering new relationships and new parallels within differing religions, this gap will
begin to close.
Since the Protestant Churches arose due to the Reformation and a separation from the authority of the
Roman Catholic Church, there may exist Protestant rituals that parallel Catholic rituals. Moreover, by

The Four Literary Forms Of The New Testament
According to our text, the New Testament is comprised of four primary literary forms: Gospels,
History, Letters and Apocalyptic (Harris, 2014). The Gospels was made up of four books written by
four separate authors who tell of Jesus from four individual viewpoints based upon their
understanding of who Jesus was, yet it does not cover the lifespan of Jesus, only certain accounts.
Therefore, it is not considered historical or a biography but is defined as sui generis . The historical
counts of the life of Christ is noted in the book of Acts. This book tells of the history of the early
church but by all accounts doesn t use traditional criteria most often noted in historical writings. The
Epistles are known as letters. These letters were thought to be written by Paul and his followers. The
letters were often written to the various churches rather than people or individuals. They were also
written to address issues, concerns or to offer praise for specific acts or behaviors. Thus, letters or
epistles addressing sin were more of the rebuking nature to bring correction and accountability in the
effort to restore the parishioners to appropriate, God fearing behaviors. Whereas, other letters may be
to praise churches for exemplifying model behaviors that could be used for strong witnessing. The
latter form is known as the apocalyptic writings. This form tends to deal with the End Times and was
suspected to have been written during the time of church persecution. The book of Revelation in
particular, was written around the 1st century when Christians were said to have been killed for their
faith. It is during this time that the question was raised regarding God s role and whether or not he
would win. It was stated emphatically that God would win and would redeem his
people.ReferenceHarris, S. L., (2014). The New Testament: A Student s Introduction (8th ed.).

Neutrophil Test Lab Report
4 Neutrophil Test: Neutrophil was isolated according to the method previously described (Hana et al.,
2008). Principle: Neutrophil was isolated using a standard density gradient separation method to
isolate neutrophils from whole blood using commercially available separation media that is a mixture
of sodium metrizoate and Dextran 500. The procedure consists of layering whole blood over the
density gradient medium, centrifugation, separation of neutrophil layer, and lysis of residual
erythrocytes. Cells are then washed, counted, and resuspended in buffer to desired concentration.
When performed correctly, this method has been shown to yield samples of 95% neutrophils with 95%
viability. Procedure: 1. Bring all reagents to room temperature. ... Show more content on

Taboos and Rituals
In the article Baseball Magic by George Gmelch, the author uses the sport of baseball as a means of
portraying different aspects of culture. The three aspects of baseball that are discussed are rituals,
taboos, and fetishes. All three of these baseball traditions or superstitions can be directly related to
specific aspects of culture. There are religious, social, and political ties to all three. In examining the
rituals, taboos, and fetishes of baseball, cultural ties can be made and one can begin to understand the
complex nature of society as it relates to the individuals that comprise it. In Baseball Magic , Gmelch

It is totally irrational to think that your mother s back will break if you walk on the cracks in the
pavement. However, I was watching people walk through the mall the other day, and it s amazing how
many people will space their steps to avoid all the cracks on the tile floor. Taboos can be social,
religious, and political in nature as well. A social taboo, regardless of which culture you refer to, is
murder. Murder is frowned upon regardless of culture, race, or creed. Political and religious taboos
can ofter be connected, depending on the culture. Often times, breaking these taboos can help to
advance a culture or a group of people past an issue. In an article posted on the BBC website by Mark
Simpson, titled Ronan Kerr killing: political taboos broken , he speaks about the death of a police
officer, and how it has brought together people of different political and religious backgrounds. A
protestant minister attended a Catholic service for the fallen officer, even though it was frowned upon
by his own faith. The political aspects of unity and standing up for what is right, far outweighed the
backlash from his own faith. By breaking this taboo among many of his own faith, he began to
politically unite the country and move ahead in their thinking, and move toward a time of less
violence, and peace in the nation. The third aspect of society that is discussed by Gmelch, in his article

The Dangers Of Modern Social Justice
The Dangers of Modern Social Justice
In America there has always been racial tension. Although it would be more accurate to state that there
has always been ethnic tension in America. The term race can be used to target an individual s
differences in physical appearance, and while in the past this was commonplace practice, today,
however, it is more apt to use ethnicity to differentiate (Segregated America Separate Is Not Equal). A
person s upbringing that helps shape who they might become (Persell 98 107).
This clash of cultures, of personal identity, has culminated in a very real Us vs. Them mentality. One
of which there is only one correct side, where one is right and the other wrong. Recent advancements
in technology have made this mentality possible to spread at a swift and unchecked speed. Where one
voice can stand against many, where one post to a social site can start a movement, where one tweet
can endanger innocent lives. Where one match in a dark room has the potential to either light the room
up, or set it on fire.
It is this style of belief structure that if not properly balanced can create such chaos and division that
not one, or many, could stand against. This oncoming wave is social justice; it is the new child of the
instant age. Yet it has no guiding figure, no parent to help ground its moral compass. It often lacks
respect for others, respect for law, and often ignores the responsibility of facing consequences. In
short, the social justice

Ww2 Environmental Effects
World War II is one of the finest examples of a total war. Countries around the world mobilized vast
empires to fight battles in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Resource production and weapon experimentation
marred the environment, causing repercussions still visible today. However, some consequences of the
war benefited the environment, complicating the Second World War s environmental history. Gerard
Weinberg, in his text World War II: A Very Short Introduction, focuses on Hitler s War in Europe. He
ignores the ways the war shaped the environment, and how the environment shaped the methods of
warfare. Environmental destruction during WWII influences modern life in places around the world,

inhalation of the spores. Scientists tested the anthrax spores on Gruinard Island in a variety of ways
that lead to the complete contamination of the island, including deep into the soil. The British never
used anthrax as a biological weapon, but after the war, the island was too deadly to return to its
owners. From 1948 to 1968, scientists tested the soil, and each time found it to have unsafe levels of
anthrax. In 1979, because of mounting threats from the public, the government performed an in depth
examination of the land and found the spores had lost little potency. The cool climate kept the spores
dormant, but there were fears that a warm weather period could produce a second generation of
anthrax. Gruinard s most contaminated areas underwent an extreme decontamination process, and

The Issue Of Popular Support
The issue of popular support is further connected to terrorist group s specific objectives, or goals. In
general, terrorists motivated by a religious component are often associated with apocalyptic like goals.
Hoffman notes that these apocalyptic goals, are in nature more violent when compared to the often
more tangible political based goals of many secular groups. The association between religiously
motivated terrorist groups and apocalyptic like goals is well known throughout academia. Jessica
Stern s book, Terror in the Name of God further references this connection. She is particularly careful
not to equate these general end of time beliefs to one religion in particular. Instead she notes how such
beliefs often span across multiple religions by noting their presence in various sacred texts across all
three of the major Abrahamic faiths. She further ties back to Hoffman s work when discussing how
apocalyptic like goals often allow for more violence and destruction when compared to other terrorist
objectives (such as forming a new government, or expelling a foreign nation from perceived territory).
While Hoffman notes the specific constituency that secular terrorists must appeal to, Stern ties the lack
of a needed supportive constituency back to religious terrorist goals. Because religiously motivated
groups often seek the complete destruction of society, these groups are less concerned with long term
popular support, (beyond basic funding and recruitment needs.)

The Importance Of Guidance Counsellors
Counselling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to
accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals (Spurgeon, 2012). Schools have been
identified as one of the main settings for the promotion of well being and mental health in children
and young people (Department for Education and Employment, 2001; DCSF, 2008b, as cited in
Harris, 2009). Counselling in an educational context establishes career and college planning,
interpersonal concerns, family matters, substance use, and personal identity issues, dominating student
s awareness, with the counselling climate providing an appropriate environment to address these
issues (Cormier Hackney, 2012). Due to the increasing needs of counselling within schools, School
Guidance Counsellors are a critical commodity for young people in today s society.
For new Guidance Counsellors, there is a broad range of concepts that need to be established and
developed. One key concept is counsellor identity. There are many facets that can inform a counsellor
s professional identity and these factors are paramount in the continuance of development and
advancement in the helping profession. Different factors such as the value held by the individual
within the profession, historical factors influencing the profession, theoretical orientation,
differentiating features separating the profession from other health professions, focus of research
efforts and scope of professional activities

The Black Liberation Movement
Introduction
African American women faced racism and classism from white women in the feminist movement and
sexism by male African Americans in the Black Liberation Movement. As a result, double jeopardy
became a classic feminist term in the exploration of oppression, feminism and racism in the U.S.
during the 20th Century (Hooks, 2000). The myths held by some black women hindered their
participation in the movement. Minority women were disadvantaged in the labor market, in addition to
being exposed to women trafficking and race based violence against them because race may
sometimes go against gender hence the need for the society to ensure equality in all feminist and

conference panels. The representation of the Whites and Blacks in the movement s activities was

who ignored the differences between their experiences based on race and class differences. The white
feminists showed an unwillingness to accept their racism based on the sentiment that they could not
oppress the black women since the white men also oppressed them. This implies that none of the two
movements was for the liberation of the African race especially the black women since they sprang
from the desire to uplift the whites. In response, a decision was made to form the Black Feminist
Movement to address the needs of the black women from which the concept of double jeopardy

The repeating rifle was a new type of weapon had a greater range and was more accurate than the

Americans trusted the media outlets reports with a great deal of trust or a fair amount of trust . A
deeper look into the polling shows that only 14 percent of population who classify as Republican trust

Dusty Vincer, Advisor
by Shruti Gajbhiye
During the recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill, millions of gallons of oil were dispersed in the Gulf of
Mexico in the same area known as the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone. The hypoxic zone along the
Gulf Coast contains less than the normal amount of dissolved oxygen, at two parts per million. The
little to no oxygen is theorized to be caused by excess nutrients from the Mississippi River along with
the stratification of the Gulf waters. The excess nutrients create a growth of primary consumers and
when decomposing at the bottom, uses the oxygen. The layering of the water does not allow for the
water to mix the top and bottom layers, leaving a lack of oxygen at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico
Hypoxic Zone and an oxygen plenty top layer. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the
petroleum, generally accepted to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, and are mainly from
anthropogenic sources and are considered environmental pollutants. The nonpolar organic molecular
are insoluble in the water, and are considered to be of utmost importance in terms of environmental
hazards. The combination of the burning of petroleum on the top of the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone

The World of Musical Theatre
Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of
human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of telling
stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks (5th
century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been said that Sophocles
composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek theatre, a Greek Chorus was
used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the plot of the show, but no musical
solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the conscious of the audience or as a sounding
board for the main characters.
Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The
expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century BC
Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and traveling
performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama s became popular in the
12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such as The Play of
Herod and The Play of Daniel.
By the time of Renaissance, the Religious Dramas have developed into an Italian tradition called
commedia dell arte where clowns improvise their ways through familiar stories. From there, Opera

His father s death during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land resulted in him becoming Duke of Normandy.
It was also the start of several attempts by jealous relatives to take his life. Amazingly enough,
William survived his arduous youth, although some people, who tried to protect him, did not. His
enemies killed three guardians and tutors. A friend of his even inadvertently saved his life. The two
were both sleeping in a very dark room, when the murderer entered. All he could see was the vague
outline of a child, whom he then killed. The killer, however, had murdered William s friend, instead,
allowing his uncle to whisk him away to safety (Costain,24). He therefore lived through several
homicide attempts that could easily have changed the history of England. Perhaps what William is
most known for, however, is the Battle of Hastings. This entire incident began with a promise given to
him in 1051 by King Edward stating that William could succeed him as King of England. However,
on his deathbed, Edward and Earl Godwin made up for past grievances, and Edward proceeded to
promise the English throne to Earl Godwin s son, Harold. William, angered that his promise of the
throne was not obliged, decided he would take England by force. On October 14, 1066, William and
his army of 25,000 to 30,000 men defeated England in the Battle of Hastings. They then marched to

Are Role Playing Games With Simulated Violence Perilous Or Diverting?
By Kassie Cordier Playing games is something we all do everyday. It can give us a feeling of
excitement in our daily boring lives. But some games aren t as good for us as you might think. Role
playing games with simulated violence can be perilous for us. Although they seem fine on the outside,
they can be very dangerous for our bodies and our minds. Games can alter our brains to think a certain
way and cause us to become inhumane. This is because they can lead to more serious actions, the
player can get hurt, and it can distract us from more important things.

Smart Kids explained, they get used to being rewarded when they hurt other players. They believe that
punching, yelling or even killing other people is okay. They show how Kids who play video games are
more likely to have violent thoughts and actions. Making yourself think a certain way will make your
brain adjust to as if you were playing the game and soon the player might not be able to decipher
fantasy from reality. Also, many studies have shown that kids who play a lot of video games (a type of
violent game) are not able to connect with others. Violent games can be leading us to something that
we would never do without them.
In conclusion, video games that are violent can be very perilous to not only kids but anyone who plays
them. They can have short and long term effects on your career and the way you think. Violent games
are bad because they can lead to serious actions, the player can get hurt, and because they can distract
us. Making the choice to play this game is not only affecting you but it can affect the people around

Knowledge And Epistemology And The Philosophy Of Knowledge
According to the oxford dictionary belief can be defined as an acceptance that something exists or is
true, especially one without proof . Beliefs are the best factor that influence in the decision making
process. In other words, the beliefs students hold have a great effect on the perceptions and the
judgments they make about the world. In education and especially in social sciences beliefs are
studied through epistemology. Epistemology is the philosophy of knowledge and how it is
acquired(Bryman, 2016). Beliefs are mostly developed through social interaction and direct messages
that we receive from our surrounding. This belief may develops in a long period of time or may be it

Positivism is based on the principle that knowledge is acquired when tested through senses and is
based on facts. As it is more scientific phenomena then it is based on the objectivity or fixity of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016). Whereas, constructivism states that knowledge is constructed through
social agents and it is in the constant state of revision. Hence it promotes variability of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016).
As Pakistani society is based on the concept of fundamentalism, which promotes the fixity of
knowledge, hence the students who are produced through this education system of Pakistan have more
or less positivist beliefs which concerned to the fixity of knowledge(Skov, 2007). So beliefs shape
behavior which can be seen in the actions of the students. To understand the beliefs of Student
teachers we just look at the ways they respond to the fixity of knowledge. So if I see the bigger
picture, the understanding of the beliefs of teachers are essential to bring change in teacher education
programs(Tillema, 1998).

Her main classical source of inspiration is the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, in which, as a
punishment for past crimes, Minos forces Athens to sacrifice seven youths and seven maidens to the
Minotaur, which kills them in a vast labyrinth. Collins says that even as a child, she was stunned by
the idea since it was just so cruel to force Athens to sacrifice its own children.
Collins also cites as a classical inspiration the Roman gladiator games. She feels three key elements
create a good game: an all powerful and ruthless government, people forced to fight to the death, and
the game s role as a source of popular entertainment.
A contemporary source of inspiration was Collins recent fascination with reality television programs.
She says they are like The Hunger Games because the Games are not just entertainment but also a

She described how the two combined in an unsettling way to create her first ideas for the series.

Essay on Ensemble Music During the Baroque Period
Baroque Period (1600 1750) Ensemble Music During the Baroque period, instrumental music was
written for every conceivable size of ensemble. On the smaller side, the Baroque sonata offers one of
the finest examples of chamber music. Two types of sonata are found during this period: the sonata da
chiesa (church sonata), and the sonata da camera (chamber sonata). The sonata da chiesa was more
somber, while the sonata da camera was, much like the suite, usually comprised of dance forms. The
gigue from Corelli s Sonata for 2 violins and lute is a fine example of the sonata da camera The term

His piano and violin arrangement of the Air from Bach s Suite known as Air on the G String has been,
however, his most enduring achievement. Suite A popular form among composers was the suite, a
series of movements based upon the rhythm and style of a particular dance. The suite could be written
for a solo instrument, for example the harpsichord or violoncello, or small instrumental ensemble, and
usually included the German Allemande, the French Courante, the Sarabande (originally from Spain),
and the English or Irish Gigue (Jig). Many also included the Gavotte, originally a French folk dance
characterized by the raising rather than the sliding of the feet. At times, non dance movements such as
the Prelude were also employed. This series of movements was designed to offer interesting contrasts
in meter, tempo, and texture. Often written for a large orchestra, the dance suite became more popular
in the late Baroque. Examples of this type are Handel s two most popular orchestral suites: Fireworks
Music and Water Music. The Fireworks Music suite was, appropriately, first performed at a large
fireworks display, while the Water Music was written for a party held on the Thames River. Legend
has it that the partygoers rode on one barge floating down the Thames, while Handel and the
musicians played on another barge immediately following. The most famous movement from these
suites is entitled Alla Hornpipe from the

Music And Music
What makes music and dance recognizable by the English spears those are the concepts are not cross
culturally shared? Some societies lack the common names for dance and music either. So as to cover
this gap specific names are used to give a description of both music and dance. This is different from
the other communities whereby the same name may be used to refer to the construction of music,
dancing, singing and also it may be used in rituals and also in the ceremonies too. This does not
change the fact that each and every social group has its own music and the music resembles the
identity of the group as well. In this we will take a look on how observing this will get an explanation
from a cross cultural type of perspective.
There is a suggestion that goes that participation in music and dance has a more further influences

would have an effect on the most of the domains which are cultural in nature. This includes political
organizations, gathering techniques, architecture style, hunting and also cosmology (Reichard GA.

rules set or the texts but the aesthetic motivations remains firm. The foundational schemes which are
in the cultural stage can be understood when named as orientations which are aesthetic in nature.

that which makes us human? Is technology harmful to the preservation of cultural values? Think about
these questions as the effects of technology and material on American culture are explored. In the first

This is how technology is adopted into American culture. Before a new technology is sold to the
public, private companies must consider the perceived benefit, the ease of use, immediacy of benefits,
price, riskiness and return on investmentii. The motivations of private companies to make a profit are
the primary factor considered in whether or not a new technology will be released, regardless of how
much the technology is wanted or needed. There is no formal voting process that takes place for the
public to decide what new technologies will be implemented into society. It all relies on private
companies to sell them if they believe they can make money. The argument can be made though that
the material and technology that consumers buy is them directly voting on what is adopted into
American culture.
4. Arriving at the conclusion; It was explained how the production of technology and material has
affected American culture. There have been numerous advances in technology that promise to make

i. The Most Formative Experience of My Christian Life:
I grew up in Pakistan with a diverse culture around me. Before moving to the U.S., the city I grew up
in was a blend of people who lived there because of their jobs, education and business purposes. I
learned that poverty, marginalization and violence, neither had a religion nor selects people of a
specific faith to attack them. This made me devote myself to the church and its programs to serve all
children of God spreading the good news of Jesus Christ and fighting for social justice against the
systemic evil in the world.
At church, in addition to my participation in the worship services, I volunteered at our church s soup
kitchen, medical camps and elementary school for underprivileged children. These experiences
opened my eyes to the deprivation of love and care in the world and a dire need of God s grace for
people at large so they could receive forgiveness, healing and restoration in their lives.
My spiritual formation took a new turn when in 2013 my parents house was burned down in an arson.
At that time, I was living with my parents. Since, the house was not insured, our local church and our
acquaintances in the neighborhood helped us financially so we could rebuild our house, while a family

Selling to children: The Marketing of Cool , she mentions how products are accepted and interpreted
by children in today s society. However, in Eric Schlosser article, Kid Kustomers , he emphasizes on
the constant antagonizing strategies through ads and televisions shows to target kids. Although Juliet
Schors and Eric Schlosser are both speaking about corporations marketing to children, their articles
differ quite significantly. While they both speak about corporation and their marketing directed to
children, Schor maintains her focus on how society perceived these products as cool or geeky, while
Schlosser focuses his article on the negative way corporations have marketed their products to
underage children. In Schlosser s article, Kid Kustomers , the author focuses on many disturbing facts
as the marketing technique for tobacco products used to target children. It was really astounding to see
that in the early 90 s these commercials of tobacco use was made kid friendly through the use of the
cartoon camel. The image itself became so popular that they were compared to the images of Mickey
Mouse. The author state, all of America s six year olds could identify

Mattel Mattel Strategic Plan
Customer focused strategic planning not always prevent issues from occurring like with Mattel, the
company is still suffering from the seriousness of product recall issues (Ferrell Hartline, 2014).
Despite Mattel s best efforts not all manufacturing companies overseas are keeping up with Mattel s
high standards (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). China s manufacturing companies say that Mattel is not
providing quality toy plans (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). Regardless of who is right or wrong, the
responsibility falls on Mattel, the name on the toy (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). Mattel is responsible for
holding their manufacturing companies to high standards (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). Unfortunately, not
every product produced is going to succeed when it comes to the safety of children (Ferrell Hartline,
2014). However, the responsibility lies on Mattel to test all products before and after manufacturing
(Ferrell Hartline, 2014). Skipping on cost can end up costing an organization in the long run with
recalls (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). The power is in the hands of the consumer to read up on these toys for
safety before buying (Ferrell Hartline, 2014). The consumer is also responsible for only buying age
appropriate toys for their children (Ferrell Hartline, 2014).
Mattel s tactical plan is to provide safe, affordable, toys that turn a financial profit (Mukherjee Pandit,
2009). Next, Mattel wants to adhere to consumers needs and wants by providing safe, age appropriate
toys

Summary Of Disney And His Worlds
For the critical book review, I have chosen to read Disney and His Worlds by Alan Bryman. Within the
book Bryman gives an extensive background of Walt Disney and how his park, Disneyland, came to
be. Although this book wasn t an enormous read, since the book was only 194 pages of text, I still had
trouble sitting down and trying to finish the book. I felt that the book had much of the same
information that I am being taught in class and what I m reading in the other assigned textbooks.
Disney and His Worlds was an interesting read overall, and I did enjoy reading the bits of information
that I did not know already. One of the first pieces of information that I learned about Walt Disney is
that not everything he did was perfect. I already knew that he didn t start off with a lot of money and
that he had to borrow a giant sum to help get Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs off the ground.
Within the book, Bryman explains that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a success with the
public and that Walt had make back more than enough money. What I didn t realize was that all of his
movies were not a huge success. For example, Bryman states that, ...both Fantasia and Pinnochio
performed poorly at the box office...and the response to Bambi was disappointing (pg 9 11). I find it
fascinating that Walt s first movie did extremely well, but most of the others flopped. I had not
realized sooner that Walt did not have consistent success after he produced Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs.

Research Paper On West Indies Cricket
West Indies cricket, the envy of the world for decades past because of its exiting and brilliant batsmen,
fast and furious fast bowlers, and its acrobatic fielders, and undisputed champions of the world for 19
years up to 1995, is now at rock bottom and looks like getting deeper and deeper.
In fact, based on the events of this week, and after all that have gone on in the past 15 or 20 years, a
good bet is that the West Indies days are numbered.
Top Eight Teams
Although it is common knowledge that the West Indies have lost 80 of 132 Test matches while
winning only 14 against the top eight teams since losing 5 0 to England in 2000 and 5 0 to Australia in
2000 1, and have failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy while Bangladesh have done ... Show

The West Indies players, however, would be comfortable if they were to be, as they are now,
subsidised by the cricket world from the money earned by the money spinners elsewhere in the world.
Is it right for the non West Indies player to run around in the sun day after day for days at a time and
then sit down and twiddle his thumbs, with nothing to do or eat, just looking on from the outside?
No, it is not right, it was never right, and it can never be right.
The West Indies Cricket Board has made many mistakes in their time, but this is not one. This is one
to produce for West Indies cricket. This is one to ensure that what is happening now never happens
again. This is one for West Indies cricket.
According To Merit
West Indies cricket is not the West Indies team alone. It is the West Indies teams and West Indies
cricketers, all West Indian cricketers. And every penny belongs to the West Indies to be added up,
divided up fairly and equitably, and to be distributed to the players according to merit and on value to

Black Tailed Prairie Dogs Case Study
Discussion on Black Tailed Prairie Dogs LRS Black tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus)
demonstrated an improved long term reproductive success until a disproportionate ratio of helpers to
breeders (exceeding amount of helpers to breeders) became injurious to the coterie. In addition, we
observed an increased aggression (25% increase) in coteries with more helpers present than smaller
ones. Lastly, we found that there was more communication within coteries that contained an average
helper pool size than in smaller and larger helper pool size coteries. These factors may have created
the results that we observe, such as less competition and how much helpers aid breeders. Less
Competition Our results suggest the improved long term reproductive success is due to the number of
helpers remaining relatively small. We suppose that having fewer helpers lowers the need for
completion and increases communication among individuals within the coteries between individuals.
Competition creates among individuals for resources and causes evolution, yet competition can be
harmful where too much exists. In brown capuchin monkeys, larger ... Show more content on

This indicates that when the helper to breeder ratio becomes too high, the coterie becomes too
competitive, thus lowering the black tailed prairie dogs long term reproductive success. From our
observations, prairie dogs seemed more disgruntled when there were more helpers, which may have
been instrumental in lowering the long term reproductive success. This disgruntled behavior, which is
a 25% increase in aggression, includes increased biting of other adults in addition to continual
collisions with other members within the coterie. There are two possibilities for this increased
aggression: used in a way to regulate how much helpers help or caused by year

Social Media And Its Impact On Society Essay
Take a minute to think about the world today. Everyone, surrounded by different social media sites:
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and more, is being influenced one way or another and some
without even realizing it. Throughout my lifetime I have seen a gradual increase in the amount of
social media sites, the use of magazines, and the audiences of television shows and movies. All are
experiencing a steady growth that is inflicting a negative outcome on society. With so many different
influences from one form of media to the next, it is difficult to control what sites are posting as well as
realizing what they are capable of doing to the human race, specifically to all the women in today s
society. From newspapers, magazines, and electronics, society surrounds itself in a web of negativity
and traps the human mind into thinking this is the way we are supposed to live. In 1928, the first
television broadcast came out. Then in 1991, the world wide population was exposed to the newest
and greatest invention of mankind, the internet (The Next Web). Newspapers and magazines are the
oldest forms of media yet are still prevalent in the world today. In history, newspapers were used
solely to inform readers on what important news was occurring in the world during that time as well
as give information about job openings, businesses and weather. Magazines were not as popular but
still were used by many over the years. As time went on, there was a gradual increase in the usage

The Fall Of Hyperion Essay
In other words, Apollo has to suffer first in order to obtain knowledge enormous , that is, the
knowledge to sympathize with those who suffer, and he thus gains wisdom as it is the outcome of his
godhead. He comes to the world as the incarnation of imagination which will turn him into the god of
poetry. Significantly, his golden melody delivers both pain and pleasure to the universe. He is just
opposite of Hyperion, who is in the fear for an unknown fate, and he is tortured by fearless and aching
ignorance (III, 107) but he doesn t follow the causes of his sorrow. With his powerful sympathetic
imagination, he reads the history of the fallen gods on the face of the goddess of memory, whose pain

Moneta the Greek Mnemosyne is goddess of Memory is also one of the fallen Titans. She is the most
powerful female figure in Keats s poetry, and also extremely expressive. She is also an ideal poet who
has ability to contain and tolerate suffering and still teach others its lessons. She also classifies the
people as a humanitarian poets and dreamers. The humanitarian poets are those to whom the miseries
of the world / Are misery, and will not let them rest (I, 147 48). The humanitarian poets are the highest
type because they keep sympathy with their fellows but the poet narrator is a dreamer, a dreaming
thing (I, 168). He does not control his emotions or feelings and does not work for his fellows so he is
called an escapist. He also has excessive feelings but cannot feel for joy and human suffering. For
Keats, a poet needs to be humanitarian and can sympathize with people. The poet achieves greatness
because of his ability to share the world s sorrows, to participate the reality of human being and
comfort man in his anguish.
Due to his knowledge of suffering he is able to sympathize with the fallen Titans pain and sorrow. In
Hyperion Apollo reads Mnemosyne s face and learns the meaning of suffering and in The Fall the poet
learns the quality of sympathy from Moneta s face. When Moneta tells how Saturn and Thea have
suffered from the defeat, the poet greatly sympathizes with them and he even has a death wish and

The Spinal Cord and Spinal Cord Injury
INTRODUCTION The spinal cord is a major channel in the body where motor and sensory
information travels from the brain to the body. It has white matter that surrounds a central gray matter.
The gray matter is where most of the neuronal cells are located. Injury to the spinal cord will affect the
conduction of information across any part of the spinal cord where the damage is located (Maynard et
al., 1997). This will often result in permanent disability of a certain muscle or region of the body
(Meletis et al., 2008) and a loss of tissue where the damage is located (Peng et al., 2009). As of now,
there is no treatment for spinal cord injury expect for steroids. All steroids can do is provide protect of

It is thought that during damage to the spinal cord, high levels of ATP are released that can activate the
P2X7 receptor. In pure cultures, P2X7 receptor antagonist are thought to provide protect against the
effects of P2X7. This is due to blocking the receptors instead of trying to stop the inflammatory
effects. Because the antagonists can selectivly mediate the activation of P2X7, it is the perfect
candidate for the therapeutic treatment of spinal cord injurys (Domercq et al., 2009).
Stem Cell Research Stem cells are located in the spinal cord and they are hard to identify
(Konstantinos et al., 2008). Human embryonic stem cells have advantages that other cell types do not
contain. They have a large capacity for differentiation and for expansion. They also help in
remyelination. However, studies have shown that human embryonic stem cell derived oligodendrocyte
progenitor cells can help in neuroprotection, homeostatic maintenance, suppressing inflammation, and
promoting the regeneration of axons. (Sharp et al., 2010). Most of the neural stem cell potential is in
ependymal cells (Meletis et al., 2008). Transplanting these oligodendrocyte progenitor cells just one
week after the injury showed widespread oligodendrocyte remyelination throughout the white matter
(Keirstead et al., 2005). Most spinal cord injuries in humans

Mead Halls In Beowulf
In Beowulf, many parts of the story have realistic and true qualities, one of those qualities is the
quality of how and where they lived. In the pre medieval era, mead halls were commonplace in the
European continent, now they are a thing of the past. Mead halls were very important in ancient times.
Lords ruled from them, and enemies would to try to loot from them. Mead halls in the Anglo Saxon
culture were used for many reasons, among them, bragging rights. Mead halls conveyed a message of
power and strength that are still heard today, not by the factions and kingdoms themselves, but by the
written documents and accounts recorded by Christian monks and scholars of the past. Mead halls
were very important in ancient times. Mead halls served as homes for the more powerful nobles, their
families, and quite possibly their soldiers. Mead halls served as the government building for each
settlement, and was seen as the seat of power for the lord who possessed it. Mead halls were generally
not alone as portrayed in Beowulf, but instead surrounded by a village, for the village would generate

Peasants would normally sprawl out all over the countryside growing crops, but were normally
vulnerable to raids from other countries or rebels, so they exchanged part of their crops and tribute for
protection from a lord. The Lord, having gained food and currency from the villages, would stockpile
and use some of the food, and sell the rest for more currency, currency that could fund new building
projects such as an upgrade to or a new mead hall for his subjects. The lord would also have to pay his
soldiers to keep from mutinying, and to remain loyal to him, he would also feed his armies with the
food harvested from the peasants, and buy food with the tribute given to him. Mead halls were widely
used, but the Anglo Saxon utilized them the

Physical Appearance In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
In today s society, people are constantly being judged based on their physical appearance; lacking
aesthetics in any way may lead to rejection. In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Shelley created
characters that experienced what was going on in society during her day and what is still present in
society today. One of the characters s in Frankenstein was abandoned and left with no one due to his
undesirable physical appearance. In today s society, this is similar to what people with deformities
often experience. Due to the inferior mentality, race, and class in society in which Mary Shelley lived,
the creature s unappealing physical appearance played an immense role in the abandonment he
experienced; to this day, physical appearance still plays a huge role in society.

However, the disease is not what causes the physical deformities; it is actually the treatment segment,
chemotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs are powerful medications that attack rapidly growing cancer cells.
Unfortunately, these drugs also attack other rapidly growing cells in your body including those in your
hair roots (Mayo Clinic). Chemotherapy induces hair loss in women more often than men (WebMD).
Along with Cancer and chemotherapy, Dwarfism can also cause deformities to a person s physical
appearance. Dwarfism is a short stature that results from a genetic or medical condition. It can
generally be defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches (Mayo Clinic). Whenever someone with
dwarfism is out in public they probably tend to feel a sense of not fitting in due to their size and the
way they look. They are judged on their physical appearance much like the creature in Frankenstein

  • 2. American Chemical Corporation Case Summary Introduction: 1) This report considers the potential purchase of the sodium chlorate producing plant in Collinsville, Alabama by Dixon Corporation from American Chemical Corporation in October 1979. The reason for this stems from the fact that American Chemical Corporation was attempting at the time to buy a controlling stake in Universal Paper Corporation, but the management of Universal contested this on the basis that it would be anti competitive, given that they were both producers of sodium chlorate. The US government supported Universal in this belief and in order to prevent court action American had to agree to divest its sodium chlorate producing plant in Collinsville, Alabama. As of October of 1979 Dixon has agreed to ... Now that we have determined that NPV is to be our evaluation method for the plant we need to calculate a discount rate (or hurdle rate) for the plant based on its risk profile. Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) 11) In calculating a discount rate for this firm we need to ask Is it to be cost of debt, cost of equity, or a weighted average of the two in a cost of capital? The financing for this project is 100% debt so the initial thought is to use cost of debt as the discount rate. However we believe this to not be the correct approach. Debt as at October 30, 1979 (prior to the proposed acquisition) was $1,000,00) while Stockholder s Equity was $14,718,000. So equity makes up a substantial amount of the ... Across different cultures and even ethnicities, the definitions of masculinity tend to differ, hence the plurality of masculinity. For example, the stereotype of the Latino male centers on machismo , the display of strong and aggressive masculinity (Masculinities 1: Ethnic Identities and Men s Ways of Being), whereas African American s masculinities developed a masculine gender identity known as the cool pose, which enhanced their social competence, pride, dignity, self esteem, and respect (Masculinities 1). Some of those characteristics include, Love, understanding, vulnerability, respect, loyalty, and concern (Merten). Interestingly, these traits are all qualities one would look for in a best friend. In reality, men seem not to focus on the aspects, in which women desire, but the socially constructed aspects, sought out for men s approval. • 4. Armada Portrait Analysis Elizabeth I, queen of England, was very strategic in the way she presented herself to the public. In my short story, The Queen s Decision, Elizabeth s public and private selves are evident and occasionally contrast with each other, especially during the decision to execute Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. Publicly, the Tudor queen had a strong aversion to beheading Mary Stuart, but her personal insights depict hostility to the fellow queen. Elizabeth sitting on a throne made of silk from Asia, in reference to England s colonial power. The Armada portrait was a public display to spread a positive image of the queen as propaganda and to showcase the Tudor queen s strength. Similar to Elizabeth s Armada portrait in which she places her hand on the globe (particularly North America), Elizabeth is placed directly on colonized land (Asian silk), portraying England s power over other nations. In this instance, Elizabeth s publicly demonstrates her power and her physical embodiment of England in a subtle, meaningful way. Furthermore, Elizabeth is dressed in a gold and white gown with pearls lining the bodice, inspired by the Armada portrait again. Dubbed as the virgin queen, white and pearls are both indicative of virginity and chastity, with gold being symbolic of wealth. Also, pearls are linked with the moon, an entity that is difficult to reach and having immense influence over others, similar to Elizabeth herself. Having pearls line the bodice, where the heart and stomach designate the inward seat of passion, emotion, secret thoughts, affections, or feelings, (OED) illustrates Elizabeth s ability to restrain her biological urges. Elizabeth s natural body intersects with the body politic, in that her natural body is utilized to present a political ideal of her being in control. William Cecil mentions Mary s plots against Elizabeth, notably the three major plots she is suspected of committing during her imprisonment in England. The Ridofli Plot, The Throgmorton Plot and the Babington Plot are the three times Mary attempted to kill Elizabeth, with her involvement in the Babington Plot leading to her execution. Asking questions, finding out how something works, or how something is made. When I was in grade school, I don t remember having any science classes. I do remember doing different experiments at home with my parents though. The one thing that I loved to do was mix baking soda with vinegar and watching its reaction. This was a lot of fun for me because it was very interesting to try and understand why both items that are used with food and cooking, when mixed together would do something so cool. When I got older and into middle school/high school, was when all of the cool science classes started. We learned about the different elements on the periodic table and we got to take a tour of the science lab and all of the fundamentals within it. The teacher showed us all of the different measuring tools and containers, the ways to be safe in the lab like eye goggles and all of the emergency wash stations. We also got to see a glass cabinet of a bunch of preserved animals. He explained that the animals were in formaldehyde and also told us some of the stories behind the animals. While Britain kept control over Palestine, remaining states such as Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria gained independence. The Balfour declaration essentially triggered a Zionist movement and encouraged Jews to migrate to Israel altering the demographics of Palestine, as Arabs had previously been the majority population. As conflict between the Arab and Jewish population started emerging, the Irgun emerged as a Jewish guerrilla force. Eventually the British withdrew after World War 2 in 1948 and left Israel more land than agreed on under the UN plan and this enforced the repositioning of thousands of Palestinians. In response, the Arab nations rejected the state of Israel and its claims over Palestine and conflict was physically ignited in the 1956 Israel invasion of Sinai. • 8. Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave England. They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop, land of milk/honey(4). Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. The Old Testament Israelites, references specifically the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton himself tells the Puritans that they are God s chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites inspire the Puritans to get away. The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was to the Rolling Stones a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2). In consequence of increases in technology and science, modern society has redefined its acceptable and moral behavioral standards within a social setting, whereas, the Catholic Church stands firm in its doctrines despite social and moral movements in the twentieth century. Upon these grounds I propose that it is reasonable and necessary to draw parallels between Protestant and Catholic religious services as a start to narrow the gap between Catholics and Protestants. It is in this acknowledgment of apparent similarities in worship that Protestants and Catholics would be able to appreciate each other for what they believe both religiously and socially. • 11. The Four Literary Forms Of The New Testament According to our text, the New Testament is comprised of four primary literary forms: Gospels, History, Letters and Apocalyptic (Harris, 2014). The Gospels was made up of four books written by four separate authors who tell of Jesus from four individual viewpoints based upon their understanding of who Jesus was, yet it does not cover the lifespan of Jesus, only certain accounts. Therefore, it is not considered historical or a biography but is defined as sui generis . The historical counts of the life of Christ is noted in the book of Acts. This book tells of the history of the early church but by all accounts doesn t use traditional criteria most often noted in historical writings. The Epistles are known as letters. These letters were thought to be written by Paul and his followers. The letters were often written to the various churches rather than people or individuals. They were also written to address issues, concerns or to offer praise for specific acts or behaviors. Thus, letters or epistles addressing sin were more of the rebuking nature to bring correction and accountability in the effort to restore the parishioners to appropriate, God fearing behaviors. Whereas, other letters may be to praise churches for exemplifying model behaviors that could be used for strong witnessing. The latter form is known as the apocalyptic writings. This form tends to deal with the End Times and was suspected to have been written during the time of church persecution. The book of Revelation in particular, was written around the 1st century when Christians were said to have been killed for their faith. It is during this time that the question was raised regarding God s role and whether or not he would win. It was stated emphatically that God would win and would redeem his people.ReferenceHarris, S. L., (2014). The New Testament: A Student s Introduction (8th ed.). Dubuque:McGraw Hill Education. In general, terrorists motivated by a religious component are often associated with apocalyptic like goals. Hoffman notes that these apocalyptic goals, are in nature more violent when compared to the often more tangible political based goals of many secular groups. The association between religiously motivated terrorist groups and apocalyptic like goals is well known throughout academia. Jessica Stern s book, Terror in the Name of God further references this connection. She is particularly careful not to equate these general end of time beliefs to one religion in particular. Instead she notes how such beliefs often span across multiple religions by noting their presence in various sacred texts across all three of the major Abrahamic faiths. She further ties back to Hoffman s work when discussing how apocalyptic like goals often allow for more violence and destruction when compared to other terrorist objectives (such as forming a new government, or expelling a foreign nation from perceived territory). While Hoffman notes the specific constituency that secular terrorists must appeal to, Stern ties the lack of a needed supportive constituency back to religious terrorist goals. The Importance Of Guidance Counsellors Counselling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals (Spurgeon, 2012). A study in Biology Dusty Vincer, Advisor by Shruti Gajbhiye During the recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill, millions of gallons of oil were dispersed in the Gulf of Mexico in the same area known as the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone. The hypoxic zone along the Gulf Coast contains less than the normal amount of dissolved oxygen, at two parts per million. The little to no oxygen is theorized to be caused by excess nutrients from the Mississippi River along with the stratification of the Gulf waters. The excess nutrients create a growth of primary consumers and when decomposing at the bottom, uses the oxygen. The layering of the water does not allow for the water to mix the top and bottom layers, leaving a lack of oxygen at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone and an oxygen plenty top layer. • 28. The World of Musical Theatre Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of telling stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks (5th century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been said that Sophocles composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek theatre, a Greek Chorus was used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the plot of the show, but no musical solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the conscious of the audience or as a sounding board for the main characters. Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century BC Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and traveling performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama s became popular in the 12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such as The Play of Herod and The Play of Daniel. By the time of Renaissance, the Religious Dramas have developed into an Italian tradition called commedia dell arte where clowns improvise their ways through familiar stories. It was also the start of several attempts by jealous relatives to take his life. Amazingly enough, William survived his arduous youth, although some people, who tried to protect him, did not. His enemies killed three guardians and tutors. A friend of his even inadvertently saved his life. The two were both sleeping in a very dark room, when the murderer entered. All he could see was the vague outline of a child, whom he then killed. The killer, however, had murdered William s friend, instead, allowing his uncle to whisk him away to safety (Costain,24). He therefore lived through several homicide attempts that could easily have changed the history of England. Perhaps what William is most known for, however, is the Battle of Hastings. This entire incident began with a promise given to him in 1051 by King Edward stating that William could succeed him as King of England. However, on his deathbed, Edward and Earl Godwin made up for past grievances, and Edward proceeded to promise the English throne to Earl Godwin s son, Harold. William, angered that his promise of the throne was not obliged, decided he would take England by force. The suite could be written for a solo instrument, for example the harpsichord or violoncello, or small instrumental ensemble, and usually included the German Allemande, the French Courante, the Sarabande (originally from Spain), and the English or Irish Gigue (Jig). Many also included the Gavotte, originally a French folk dance characterized by the raising rather than the sliding of the feet. At times, non dance movements such as the Prelude were also employed. This series of movements was designed to offer interesting contrasts in meter, tempo, and texture. Often written for a large orchestra, the dance suite became more popular in the late Baroque. This is different from the other communities whereby the same name may be used to refer to the construction of music, dancing, singing and also it may be used in rituals and also in the ceremonies too. This does not change the fact that each and every social group has its own music and the music resembles the identity of the group as well. Black Tailed Prairie Dogs Case Study Discussion on Black Tailed Prairie Dogs LRS Black tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) demonstrated an improved long term reproductive success until a disproportionate ratio of helpers to breeders (exceeding amount of helpers to breeders) became injurious to the coterie. In addition, we observed an increased aggression (25% increase) in coteries with more helpers present than smaller ones. Lastly, we found that there was more communication within coteries that contained an average helper pool size than in smaller and larger helper pool size coteries. These factors may have created the results that we observe, such as less competition and how much helpers aid breeders. Less Competition Our results suggest the improved long term reproductive success is due to the number of helpers remaining relatively small. We suppose that having fewer helpers lowers the need for completion and increases communication among individuals within the coteries between individuals. Competition creates among individuals for resources and causes evolution, yet competition can be harmful where too much exists. In brown capuchin monkeys, larger ... This indicates that when the helper to breeder ratio becomes too high, the coterie becomes too competitive, thus lowering the black tailed prairie dogs long term reproductive success. From our observations, prairie dogs seemed more disgruntled when there were more helpers, which may have been instrumental in lowering the long term reproductive success. This disgruntled behavior, which is a 25% increase in aggression, includes increased biting of other adults in addition to continual collisions with other members within the coterie. There are two possibilities for this increased aggression: used in a way to regulate how much helpers help or caused by year ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Social Media And Its Impact On Society Essay Take a minute to think about the world today. Everyone, surrounded by different social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and more, is being influenced one way or another and some without even realizing it. Throughout my lifetime I have seen a gradual increase in the amount of social media sites, the use of magazines, and the audiences of television shows and movies. All are experiencing a steady growth that is inflicting a negative outcome on society. With so many different influences from one form of media to the next, it is difficult to control what sites are posting as well as realizing what they are capable of doing to the human race, specifically to all the women in today s society. From newspapers, magazines, and electronics, society surrounds itself in a web of negativity and traps the human mind into thinking this is the way we are supposed to live. In 1928, the first television broadcast came out. Then in 1991, the world wide population was exposed to the newest and greatest invention of mankind, the internet (The Next Web). Newspapers and magazines are the oldest forms of media yet are still prevalent in the world today. In history, newspapers were used solely to inform readers on what important news was occurring in the world during that time as well as give information about job openings, businesses and weather. Magazines were not as popular but still were used by many over the years. As time went on, there was a gradual increase in the usage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The Fall Of Hyperion Essay In other words, Apollo has to suffer first in order to obtain knowledge enormous , that is, the knowledge to sympathize with those who suffer, and he thus gains wisdom as it is the outcome of his godhead. He comes to the world as the incarnation of imagination which will turn him into the god of poetry. Significantly, his golden melody delivers both pain and pleasure to the universe. He is just opposite of Hyperion, who is in the fear for an unknown fate, and he is tortured by fearless and aching ignorance (III, 107) but he doesn t follow the causes of his sorrow. He does not control his emotions or feelings and does not work for his fellows so he is called an escapist. He also has excessive feelings but cannot feel for joy and human suffering. For Keats, a poet needs to be humanitarian and can sympathize with people. The poet achieves greatness because of his ability to share the world s sorrows, to participate the reality of human being and comfort man in his anguish. • 48. The Spinal Cord and Spinal Cord Injury INTRODUCTION The spinal cord is a major channel in the body where motor and sensory information travels from the brain to the body. It has white matter that surrounds a central gray matter. The gray matter is where most of the neuronal cells are located. Injury to the spinal cord will affect the conduction of information across any part of the spinal cord where the damage is located (Maynard et al., 1997). This will often result in permanent disability of a certain muscle or region of the body (Meletis et al., 2008) and a loss of tissue where the damage is located (Peng et al., 2009). As of now, there is no treatment for spinal cord injury expect for steroids. All steroids can do is provide protect of the spinal cord from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is thought that during damage to the spinal cord, high levels of ATP are released that can activate the P2X7 receptor. In pure cultures, P2X7 receptor antagonist are thought to provide protect against the effects of P2X7. This is due to blocking the receptors instead of trying to stop the inflammatory effects. Because the antagonists can selectivly mediate the activation of P2X7, it is the perfect candidate for the therapeutic treatment of spinal cord injurys (Domercq et al., 2009). Stem Cell Research Stem cells are located in the spinal cord and they are hard to identify (Konstantinos et al., 2008). Human embryonic stem cells have advantages that other cell types do not contain. They have a large capacity for differentiation and for expansion. They also help in remyelination. However, studies have shown that human embryonic stem cell derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells can help in neuroprotection, homeostatic maintenance, suppressing inflammation, and promoting the regeneration of axons. (Sharp et al., 2010). Most of the neural stem cell potential is in ependymal cells (Meletis et al., 2008). Transplanting these oligodendrocyte progenitor cells just one week after the injury showed widespread oligodendrocyte remyelination throughout the white matter (Keirstead et al., 2005).
