On October 21, 2017, I was able to observe Claire Marcus for my Life Span Development class.
This observation allowed me observe the physical and cognitive changes children experience. It
was performed at the Marcus household in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This observation was

Preparing for senior night, my last home volleyball game, I found myself sorting through pictures
of my high school years and noticed a recurring theme: a bittersweet memory, my walking boot.
As silly as it may sound, I have derived much of my identity from this boot. When I meet new
classmates, they ask about the status of my injury. How is your foot? Can you play volleyball
again? I cannot blame them for noticing my bum ankle. For more than a year (on and off), a
bulky, grey piece of plastic masked the lower half of my leg. For a part of this time, I even rode
through the hallways on a rented medical scooter that my friends affectionately dubbed Ricky
Bobby. This boot, the thing that once caused me anxiety is now a symbol of my determination.
Additionally, it opened my eyes to the field I want to spend the next chapter of my life pursuing:
physical therapy. The summer before my junior year, I worked harder than I ever had to train for
my first varsity season. Immediately after an intense run, I would go home and ice my ankle to
relieve the pain that I ignored during the workout itself. Push through; I would tell myself, be
strong! I thought that I was being strong by working through the pain. Sports media always praises
the athletes who played the championship game on a broken foot or a sprained ankle, but you never

Gender in Everyday Life In today s culture, I see gender being a person s master status. In most
aspects of my life, I notice that gender overrides other statuses such as my race or occupation. I
believe gender does this because of the way it is instilled in every social institution. I imagine it is
hard to inquire about my experiences without it coming from a woman s perspective. It s not what it
means to be college educated, but what does it mean to be a college educated woman, and not
what does it mean to be black, but what does it mean to be a black woman. Parenthood is near
impossible to be understood without seeing it through a gender experience. Although gender is
a social construction, it dictates individuals in a way that I cannot imagine any other social
concept could. As I recorded my actions throughout the day, I realized that there are a lot of
them that are dictated by my gender. I recorded over 50 actions and I am sure that I could have
recorded differently depending on the kind of day. I recorded around 10 15 actions just from the
daily aspect of getting ready and clothing. For example, I thought I chose my clothing depending
on how I felt that day, but I realized small things like my choice of underwear was never of my
volition. Depending on the kind of pants I wore, I wanted to avoid a panty line not only for
fashion s sake but because that will affect future interactions with the other sex. With my
experience, I see that men pick the underwear that will suit their comfort level, like if they want

winning book by Brian Selznick. In a successful attempt to create a movie/book feeling, he
replaced 158 pages of words with pictures. This picture, depicted on pages 118 119, caught my
eye because it effectively contributes to the development of the narrative. It relates to Hugo s
father, who is a minor character, but the picture perfectly correlates with the description
provided in the pages. This image is a flashback from Hugo s mind. It shows that Hugo s father,

Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) to get the state unemployment rate from 2003 to 2014. LAUS is
a Federal State cooperative effort that publishes monthly estimates of employment and
unemployment for approximately 7,300 areas, including all states, countries, metropolitan areas,
and cities with a population of 25,000 or more, by residence. Labor force data from the LAUS
program follows the same CPS concepts and definitions used for the national labor force data. In
particular, this study uses the seasonal adjustment monthly state unemployment rate, which
eliminates the influences of weather, holidays, the opening and closing of schools, and other
recurring seasonal events from economic time series. Since the CPS collects data through
interviewing a limited amount of people, it cannot fully represent the labor market of the United
