The independent variable was the amount of motor oil in 2% salt solution because it
is the variable that was being tested and purposefully manipulated. The dependent
variable was the hatching viability of the brine shrimp tested (which was calculated
by adding the number of brine shrimp swimming at 24 hours to the number of brine
shrimp swimming at 48 hours, and then divided by the total number of eggs initially
placed in the petri dish). The control group was a petri dish of brine shrimp in 30 ml

In the Matrix, Morpheus, a leader of the movement to save the world from the matrix,
talks about human beings being born into bondage. A bondage where people see and
live in an imaginary world, believed to be the real world. Where everything they do,
see, and how they react to this imagery, is part of the program. The matrix
controlling a person s action and way of thinking, such as in The Cave.
Morpheus contacts Neo, a computer hacker, who chosen to assist in destroying the
matrix and save humanity. He offers Neo a chance to see reality or return to the
world he has known all his life, a world where Neo experienced dreams that never
occurred, the matrix?world.
To do this, Neo must choose between a red pill, which will show him reality, and a
blue pill, which sends him back to the world he has always known. With this scene,
the Wachowski brothers use imagery to portray decisions people must make on a
daily basis, choose right from wrong. As Morpheus hands Neo the pills, his
reflection off his own sunglasses, is two images, both of Morpheus stretching out
his arm, but in one he is holding the red pill, and in the other a blue pill. Before
making his decision, Morpheus asks Neo if he has ever had a dream that he
thought was real, and if so, how could he really tell the dream from reality. Neo does
not answer, but takes the red pill, and sees the world, according to Morpheus.

amongst aboriginal youth are even more alarming nearly one fourth of all youth
suicides in BC are committed by aboriginals and more than half of all aboriginal
suicides are committed by youth (Chandler). The fact that indigenous communities in

world implies that these alarming statistics may not solely be a result of aboriginal

This theory predicts that there are two components to suicide. First off, perception
of burdening others and feeling socially alienated combine to result in the desire to
die. However, an individual will not act on this desire unless he/she has developed a
capability to do so. Capability to commit suicide is developed through habituation
from overexposure which perhaps desensitizes the individual to experiences that are
painful. This may be vital in allowing the individual to overcome innate instincts for
survival and prepare him/her to act on the desire to die. Aboriginal people in Canada
have undergone tremendous acculturation and marginalization (failing to acquire and
value Aboriginal values and identity, while also failing to identify with the cultural
values of the larger society) which may be responsible in making them perceive
themselves as a burden to others and feel socially alienated. Such feelings, based on
the interpersonal psychological theory, might instil the desire to die. Habituation and
as a result, desensitization to the fear and pain associated with a suicidal experience,
could be occurring due to high rates of suicide in one s community. Thus, the
interpersonal psychological theory provides some insight into aboriginal suicide.

amongst patients
