Hypothesis
If hatching viability is affected by the amount of motor oil in the environment of the
brine shrimp eggs, then when the amount of motor oil is increased the hatching
viability will decrease.
Experimental Design
The independent variable was the amount of motor oil in 2% salt solution because it
is the variable that was being tested and purposefully manipulated. The dependent
variable was the hatching viability of the brine shrimp tested (which was calculated
by adding the number of brine shrimp swimming at 24 hours to the number of brine
shrimp swimming at 48 hours, and then divided by the total number of eggs initially
placed in the petri dish). The control group was a petri dish of brine shrimp in 30 ml
of 2% salt solution with no motor oil. The constants, or variables that need to be
controlled, were the salinity percentage of the salt solution (2%), the amount of salt
solution in each petri dish (30 ml), the total time the brine shrimp were left in the
petri dishes (48 hours), and the frequency of when the brine shrimp were checked

morality and reinforce his ultimate triumph. Before Lapham s financial ruin, he is the
only character with fault. Yet as his world crumbles, so does the credibility and
innocence of his wife, two daughters, and former partner, Mr. Rogers. At the same
time, the very catalyst of Lapham s ruin exonerates him. This allows Howells to
reinforce Lapham s ultimate rise in the novel, despite his financial and social failures.
Mrs. Lapham is the stout morality behind her husband s affairs, Penelope and Irene
are both good and innocent girls, and Mr. Rogers is the victimized partner. With his
lending money to Rogers, Lapham s one speck (123) is removed, and his rise to

Morpheus contacts Neo, a computer hacker, who chosen to assist in destroying the
matrix and save humanity. He offers Neo a chance to see reality or return to the
world he has known all his life, a world where Neo experienced dreams that never
occurred, the matrix?world.
To do this, Neo must choose between a red pill, which will show him reality, and a
blue pill, which sends him back to the world he has always known. With this scene,
the Wachowski brothers use imagery to portray decisions people must make on a
daily basis, choose right from wrong. As Morpheus hands Neo the pills, his
reflection off his own sunglasses, is two images, both of Morpheus stretching out
his arm, but in one he is holding the red pill, and in the other a blue pill. Before
making his decision, Morpheus asks Neo if he has ever had a dream that he
thought was real, and if so, how could he really tell the dream from reality. Neo does
not answer, but takes the red pill, and sees the world, according to Morpheus.

Aboriginal people represent less than 3% of the total population in BC. Yet, they
account for more than 9% of all suicides in BC (Chandler). The numbers of suicides
amongst aboriginal youth are even more alarming nearly one fourth of all youth
suicides in BC are committed by aboriginals and more than half of all aboriginal
suicides are committed by youth (Chandler). The fact that indigenous communities in
Canada have the highest rate of suicideof any culturally identifiable group in the
world implies that these alarming statistics may not solely be a result of aboriginal
communities belonging to a minority cultural group. I will attempt to build a
speculative hypothesis behind the significantly high suicide rates amongst aboriginal
This theory predicts that there are two components to suicide. First off, perception
of burdening others and feeling socially alienated combine to result in the desire to
die. However, an individual will not act on this desire unless he/she has developed a
capability to do so. Capability to commit suicide is developed through habituation
from overexposure which perhaps desensitizes the individual to experiences that are
painful. This may be vital in allowing the individual to overcome innate instincts for
survival and prepare him/her to act on the desire to die. Aboriginal people in Canada
have undergone tremendous acculturation and marginalization (failing to acquire and
value Aboriginal values and identity, while also failing to identify with the cultural
values of the larger society) which may be responsible in making them perceive
themselves as a burden to others and feel socially alienated. Such feelings, based on
the interpersonal psychological theory, might instil the desire to die. Habituation and
as a result, desensitization to the fear and pain associated with a suicidal experience,
could be occurring due to high rates of suicide in one s community. Thus, the
interpersonal psychological theory provides some insight into aboriginal suicide.
