My Little Pony Art Of World War II
This soldier s statements carry merit as there were a number of World War 2 military planes
adorned with images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck ready for battle. Even in the Brony
fandom there exists a large a cache of military inspired My Little Pony art located on websites like
DeviantArt portraying ponies militarygarb. There has even been an Air Force squadron which
adopted a redesigned My Little Pony logo as their unit patch. Other soldiers defend their position
as a Brony by expressing the need for people to have a need to get away from the stresses of life.
They feel as though there is a distinction between the service they provide and activities they
engage in during duty hours:
Even if the main interest in MLP was escapism, all media is essentially escapism, whether it s the
rich rapper, the football star, or the action movie hero. Everyone to some extent lives vicariously
through the entertainment they consume. At least this show let s [sic] the audience escape to a
world where integrity, loyalty, and kindness is exalted, rather than violence, cynicism, and overt
sexuality.
Part of what this soldier sees in Schlicter s argument is the interpretation of the off duty hours
activities. Engaging in a media text like My Little Pony does not take away from the job they do.
It is simply a portion of their life that only appears contradictory because it competes with the
image of military soldier presented in mainstream media and this soldier feels the message

Robert Frost Research Paper
Simply said, Robert Frost was an intriguing man. In the span of his career, he was awarded four
pulitzer prizes and recited a poem at John F. Kennedy s inauguration. Many of his poems had
underlying messages that would influence many people, even today. In short, many of Frost s
poems give life lessons and enlighten the readers on the subjects of nature and life altogether,
making Robert Frostan important poet in American History. Robert Lee Frost, named after the
famous Southern General Robert E. Lee, was brought into this world on March 26, 1874, in San
Francisco, California. He was born to William Frost, Jr. and Isabelle Frost. Growing up he had
only a sister, Jeanie. When Robert Frost was eleven years old, Frost s father died from tuberculosis,

It all started with his first poem, My Butterfly: An Elegy. It was published in The Independent in
1894. In 1906, Frost wrote two poems that really showed his love for the landscape. These were
named The Tuft of Flowers and The Trial By Existence. Frost s first book of poems, A Boy s
Will, was released in 1912. A year later, his second book of poems, North of Boston, was
released. Soon after, the poem The Road Not Taken, inspired and wrote while in England, was
released. Once again, his love for the outdoors shined through. In 1916, his third collection of
poems, called Mountain Interval, was released containing poems written in England. Frost
received his first pulitzer award for his amazing poem collection called New Hampshire (1924).
He also received pulitzer awards for his poem collections Collected Poems (1931), A Further
Range (1937), and A Witness Tree (1943). Frost recited his famous poem, The Gift Outright,
during John F. Kennedy s inauguration. The poem recited our American History and how we
have become who we are today. Robert Frost believed the poems The Most of It and Never Again
Would Birds Song Be The Same were two of his best poems. In his poem collection, A Boy s

Hurricane Sandy Change 2050
October 2012 s Hurricane Sandy shock America by submerging cities underwater, leaving about
149 people dead, over thousands of people homeless, and millions of people without

Barbie and cultural aspects: Diffusion and failure
Originating from the concept that different ethnic groups can have their very own stereotyped
ideals of beauty, in a strategy of expanding the global reach of Barbie line to different cultures,
Mattel came up with multi cultural Barbie, i.e. Barbie with different backgrounds, for instance:
the coloured Barbie was warmly greeted in African, American, Hispanic, and Indian cultures.
However, there was controversy over approaches of Mattel in other markets, of which cultures
traditional Barbie dolls were not compatible with. Drawbacks were clearly seen in Mattel s
business in several overseas markets, to name but a few, ban on Barbie in Malaysia due to its
lack of Asian appearance; Barbie confistication in Iran because of its non Islamic features (Ferrell
2007, 484), which go against their religion in terms of women s image; Barbie rejection in China, a

The Treatment Of Medical Care
Each day, men, women and children are put behind bars suffer from lack of access to medical
health care. Chronic illnesses go untreated, emergencies are ignored, and patients with serious
illnesses fail to receive needed care. A small failure to medical care can turn in to death of an
inmate if left untreated. Prisoners are humans whether inmates or not, with normal health issues or
diseases. Even a common cold is an example of an illness that needs treatment. A lot with what is
wrong with the health care system today, in the United States deals with money. Within prisons, it
is an entire different story. The mission of medical care is to diagnose, comfort and cure. These
goals are not being achieved within the prisonsystem. Care needs to be given to every inmate,
even the most despised and violent one among them all. Prisoners who had healthcare before
becoming incarcerated may have that ignored or taken away from them. International law
provides the rights of everyone, including people who may have gotten their freedom take away.
The United States of America has the world s highest incarceration rate. Americans prison
population has been growing since the war on drugs led to tough on crime laws being
implemented in the 1980s and 1990s. (Engel, 2014) Many people enter prison knowing they will
be out in a few short months, and others for life. It doesn t seem the norm to be treating a patient
while he or she is chained to the bed. However, no matter the circumstance,

particular parts of the world. There may be green houses with special collections too such as
tropical plants, alpine plants or other exotic plants.

Botanic gardens are uniquely placed to help address issues that are relevant to restore ecosystems.
According to Hill (2005: para. 1 line 1) theyprovide knowledge and expertise in plant taxonomy,

John Froehlich Research Paper
r centuries farming had been down with manual labor and animals. Beginning in the early 1800 s
steam powered engines and other mechanical devices began to be used in agriculture and farming.
John Froehlich helped make permanent changes to farming with his invention of the traction
engine .
John Froelich was born in 1849 in Iowa and attended school in Galena, Illinois, and in Iowa. While
in college he became interested in engineering, and farming and agriculture. After he graduated from
college, he built the first petrol powered traction engine that would move both forward and
backward. The tractor , as these machines would come to be known, had a 16 horsepower engine
and could pull an implement forward as well as go backward. The name tractor was derived ... Show

Unlike animals and people, tractors did not get tired, although they did breakdown frequently and
their moving parts were dangerous. Because tractors were much stronger than horses, machines
which had been powered by horses could now be more easily powered with tractors.
Many improvements have been made on the tractor since the model John Froelich invented in
1892. The first tractor had three wheels and was clumsy to move. Eventually tractors would be
made with four wheels which made them easier to drive and more stable when moving. The
invention of the tractor would also lead to the invention of the Caterpillar or crawler which
worked much like the tractor except it used tracks instead of wheels. These machines proved
especially useful in places like the California which had heavier soil. The invention of the tractor
also lead to the invention of powered hydraulics to lift heavy machinery and the power take off
allowing the tractor to be used more efficiently as a power source to other machines while the
tractor was stationary or moving. These improvements and inventions have led to many types of
machines which have made farming more efficient and

Taking a Look at Impressionism
What Impressionism Sought to Achieve By the year 1863 the sentry which allows the visual
messages transmitted by the eye to penetrate to the brain only after a rigorous censorship, had
admitted most aspects of visual truth, but there were two that had not yet officially passed the
censor. They were (1) the colour and vibration of light and (2) the density of air. No one had ever
painted the true colour of sunshine and shadow, and hardly anyone had thought it worthwhile to
suggest that the density of the air is not always constant, that a picture could be painted, for
instance, of a landscape seen through a heavy mist or fog. But both these visual discoveries
were, fundamentally, subheadings of a larger discovery. What the Impressionists did, almost
without knowing it, was to realize the phenomenon of transitoriness. The artist who carries his
canvas out into the open air and attempts to record every nuance of what his eye sees is in a very
different frame of mind from the artist who constructs his picture in his studio from a series of
preparatory sketches or studies. His eye may not be more searching but it becomes conscious of
a different set of visual data. He becomes less and less concerned with the nature of the object
figure or landscape he happens to be painting, and more and more conscious of the appearance of
the object at a particular moment of time. For Monet, at work on a picture of Rouen Cathedral,
what his eyes encountered was not a Gothic

Comparing The Iliad And The Odyssey
This short essay will identify five traditional epic characteristics that are evident in both the Iliad
and the Odyssey.
The first epic characteristic evident in both epics is catalogs and genealogies. For instance, Book
VIII of the Odyssey features a list of participants in the game (115 125) and the Iliad Book II
features a catalog of ships (484 759).
Secondly, both epics start in media res. The Odysseystarts ten years after the Trojan Warand the
Illiad starts nine years after the start of the war.
Thirdly, the Muses are prayed to for inspiration to tell the story, which can be observed in the Iliad
Book I (1 9) and in the Odyssey Book I (1 31).
Fourthly, the main characters also give long formal speeches. For instance, in Book XI of the
Iliad, Hector rallies his men with a long speech after Agamemnon is carried off the field (248 291).
Similarly, there are extended speeches between Telemachus and the suitors, which compile Book II
of the Odyssey.
Finally, there is intervention of gods or machinery in both epics. For Odysseus , Poseidon s divine
intervention kept him from returning home for several years. Similarly, one of many examples of
divine intervention exists fairly in the beginning of the Iliad, when Apollo responds to Chryses
appeal to strike the Greek armies with plague.
In conclusion, five traditional epic characteristics that are evident in both the Iliad and the Odyssey
have been identified in the paragraphs above.

Queen Elizabeth I Of England Or The Golden Age
Queen Elizabeth I of England
Queen Elizabeth I of England is considered to be the most significant monarch in all of English
history. She ruled England for forty four years with a commitment to preserve peace and strength.
Her time as Queen, would come to be known as the Elizabethan Era or the Golden Age.
Born on the seventh of September 1533 to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth was a
healthy and happy baby, however, she was to only spend three years with her birth mother, who
would be executed in 1536 for false charges made by King Henry VIII of incest, adultery,
witchcraft, and conspiracy against the king. Her father was disappointed she wasn t a boy and didn

However, the rivalry did not last very long because Mary was executed in 1587. Elizabeth refused
to have her executed, but after Mary s role in the Babington Plot was revealed, she made the
decision to send her to her death.
Elizabeth found her final years as queen difficult. Ministers would often make decisions without
consulting her first; she was loosing her grip on power. She was in Richmond Palace when her
health started to fail and died in the early hours of March 24th, 1603, making her the oldest
monarch to rule England at that time, proving to England that women can do some extraordinary
things, just as well as men can. Elizabeth was never married and had no children to take on the
throne so King James of Scotland took over the throne.
Elizabeth left England peaceful, strong, rich, powerful, and with a majority transferring to
protestant, but her greatest achievement was the relationships she forged with her subjects.
Queen Elizabeth was truly an incredible leader and has her own unique place in history. Her
loving and kind spirit drew many people in and made her a favorite. Like she said in her golden
speech of 1601, This I account the glory of my crown, that I have reigned with your

Research Study On Data Collection Methods
Data Collection Methods This research study would use paper and pencil method, an achievement
test. The participants would be taking a progress monitoring test. This type of method is
appropriate for the study because it gives accurate data about student s abilities before the start of
the research study. It is also used at the end of the study for the scores can be compared between
each class and initial scores.
Instruments
First off, the students would take a progress monitoring test. The test would be a reading progress
monitoring test to determine where the students are at before the research experiment and again at
the end of the experiment. The test is called R CBM. The R CBM is a one minute test that requires
the student to read aloud. The test consists of three passages. The student will read three one
minute passages and the median score is taken. Based on the students reading level, and grade level
is how the teacher will know what the student will read. Special education teachers are given
district progress monitoring binders that contain different passages for reading levels and grade
levels. The type of data would be interval data. The type of data would be interval because it
measures cognitive ability. A progress monitoring test would be like an achievement test because it
measures a student s current proficiency. It provides information about what the student has learned.
Procedure of Test
The researcher would tell the two special education teachers to

Fermentation Of Yeast Lab Report
The objective of this study is to show the process of fermentation of yeast and the cellular
respiration rate that is found in the mitochondria. The first part of the experiment tested
fermentation of yeast through the production of CO2 under certain circumstances. Four different
food sources were used: glucose, sucrose, starch, and H2O. The temperature varied from 37oC to
4oC and measured on a 5 minute interval. We predicted that the glucose on the highest temperature
would produce the most CO2 bubbles. In the alcohol fermentation process glucose is initially used,
we predicted that the increase in glucose would produce the most CO2. The second part of the
experiment, cellular respirationwas measured from mitochondria found in isolated lima beans. This
was done to examine the citric acid cycle that takes place in the mitochondria. Within the citric acid
cycle, succinate must be converted to fumarate. The experiment tested the reaction rate of the
succinate with the varying mixtures that contained DPIP, a buffer, succinate and the mitochondrial
suspension. These mixtures were placed inside the spectrometer where transmittance was measured.
We predicted that solution 3 would have the lowest rate of reaction. This is because solution 3
contained the most succinate as well as an considerable amount of the mitochondrial suspension in
the same solution.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sucrose followed but took a longer period of time to create the CO2 . On the other hand,
starch remained stagnant in all three temperatures creating little to no bubbles at all. Table 1

most bubbles observed to the least follows: glucose (37oC, 25oC, and 4oC), sucrose (25oC, 4oC,

Theme Of Revelation By Flannery O Connor
Flannery O Connor was a Southern Gothic writer who grew up in Georgia in the mid 20th
century. She is known for her short stories and admired for reflecting her background along with
her religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic into her writing. She was affected by lupus at age 26 and
only lived for another 13 years afterwards. Her later stories more heavily reflected her beliefs and
her faith, one of which being Revelation, published the year she died in 1964. It is about a
stereotypical southern woman, Mrs. Turpin, who identifies others by their social class and is
caught off guard when a young educated daughter can no longer ignore her bigotry and attacks her
with a textbook. Throughout the rest of the story, Mrs. Turpin is in conflict with... Show more

Turpin s self image. The first of which is the dramatic irony of O Connor giving the reader insight
into the two sides of the main character. She sees herself as a, respectable, hard working, church
going woman, and as the reader we are able to see a very different side (194). This contrast gives
the reader their first insight into the theme of self image. Later on in the waiting room when
Mary Grace hurls the book across the room, we see the theme develop through more irony. The
book was titled Human Development, exactly what Mrs. Turpin needed to develop spiritually. At
home, when in bed with Claud, we see the first instance in which she worries about what others
think about her as a consequence of her actions. She wanted to tell him... she did not wish to put
the image of herself as a wart hog from hell into his mind (194 195). It s ironic because as her
husband, he should be someone she can come to with problems, but instead, she takes them to the
farm help, which just makes her feel worse and further frustrates her. The last and most significant
piece of irony that finalizes Mrs. Turpin s transformation comes in her religious image at the end of
the story. Those that she categorized at, the bottom of the heap, were transcending into heaven
before herself and her husband (181). This is the ultimate wake up call for her and her
understanding of God, judgment, and self perception. This development of irony happens parallel to
Mrs. Turpin s developing self perception and judgmental behavior. The irony within the religious
image seen at the end, further clears up her faith and spiritual understanding to restore her

Stylistics By Robert Frost
STYLISTIC ANALYSIS IN POEM ENTITLED
STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING
BY ROBERT
I. Introduction
The word stylistics is derived from style. Stylistics is a branch of Linguistics which deals
with different styles. It refers to the study of appropriate use of words or language in a sentence
or writing. Widdowson (1975, p 3) defines stylistics as the study of literary discourse from a
linguistic orientation‖. He added by saying that stylistics is the link between literary criticism and
linguistics. And has (as yet at least) no independent branch of its own. He also says that stylistics
involves both literary criticism and linguistics, as its morphological construction suggests: the

Robert Frost in his poem is being observed in this study.
Materials and Methods
I.1 Materials
The material was taken in Robert Frost s poem entitled Stopping by Woods on a Snowy
Evening . Robert Frost (1874 1964) Robert Frost, an American poet, was born in San Francisco,
California. He is a well known modern poet. He is generally regarded as a poet, teacher, and a
man of wisdom. He had a profound knowledge of literature, history, science and philosophy.
Frost is a philosophical poet from the start.
His aim was not writing poems for charming rustic but philosophical anxiety, stoical sadness
which were obvious in his later work. Philosophical poetry deals with questions about life, death
and man #39;s destiny in the universe. Frost also raises such questions though his answers are vague
and often equivocal (Khan, Raffique and Saddique, 2014). quot;Stopping by Woods on a Snowy

Billy Pilgrim s Struggle with PTSD in Vonnegut s...
In order to illustrate the devastating affects of war, Kurt Vonnegut afflicted Billy Pilgrim with Post

Slaughterhouse Five negative examples to illustrate the horrible and devastating examples of war.
The examples from the book are parallel to real life experiences of war veterans, including

chapters, Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time. Billy has gone to sleep a senile widower and
awakened on his wedding day (Vonnegut 23). Throughout the book we are taken on a spastic
and wild journey from one moment in Pilgrim s life to another. For instance, Pilgrim is walking
through the horribly cold, bleak and depressing German landscape with The Three Musketeers
and ends up being dragged by Weary most of the way. As soon as the two scouts ditch him and
Weary and it seems their ordeal couldn t get any worse, Pilgrim time travels to a moment in
which he has just won the Presidency of The Lion s Club and proceeds to gives an impressive
speech. (Vonnegut 48 50). This sort of behavior, completely dissociating oneself from the
horrible situation at hand, is typical of PTSD. Pilgrim wanted to escape completely from the
cold and depressing hell he was in and be back in happiness, where he had just won a successful
campaign for the Presidency of his club. This is what happens throughout the book and it is simply
another example of Pilgrim s widespread and horribly debilitating case of PTSD.
Yet another incident that points out Pilgrim s PTSD is one in which he experiences the symptoms
described as, ... veterans complained of palpitations, chest pain, headache, dimness of vision and

Type of Mass Media
Type of mass media Mass media are media, which can be used to communicate and interact with a

inseparable part of our lives. Entertainment and media always go hand in hand, but in addition to
the entertainment, mass media also remain to be an effective medium for communication,

The AFLCIO and Organized Labor Regeneration
The AFLCIO and Organized Labor Regeneration While researching this paper I came across a
very interesting article. In the November 2000 issue of Reason magazine, Michael McMenamin
leads with the following paragraph: Organized labor was a one century phenomenon. Look it
up. Union members were only 9.5% of the private sector work force in 1999, down from a peak
of 37% 40 years earlier. The last time union membership was so low was in 1902, when the
union members were 9.3% of the private sector work force #8230; The current union leaders, led
by AFL CIO president John Sweeney, have no realistic plans to change course. They are presiding
over the final, terminal stage of organized labor. And they like things just the way they are.... Show

According to the Gallup organization, approval for organized labor has never fallen below 55%
(which happened in 1979 and 1981) and had actually risen to 65% by 1999. Gallup also placed
organized labor alongside big business and big government and asked people which one was the
biggest threat to the country. In 1965 organized labor was a close second to big government.
Labor received 29% to big governments 35%. Organized labor as a threat steadily declined and
by 1999 only 8% of the people viewed it as the biggest threat behind big business at 24% and big
government at 65%. (Cornfield 1999) The declining view of big labor as a threat could explain the
rising approval ratings. Those who think that the unions have fallen far enough that they are no
longer a threat could offer an approval even though they may personally disapprove of them. It is
analogous to attitude towards small communist countries such as Korea and Cuba. While many do
not approve of the way in which the countries operate, they no longer view them as a viable threat
to the democratic nations. While the public opinion towards unions has softened in the recent years,
unions still face a monumental task in trying to regain, or even maintain membership levels. In
order to maintain their current proportion of the workforce, unions must organize 300,000 workers
a year. In order to even begin to approach the

The Positivism Criminology s Theory Of Human Evolution
The Positivism criminology developed in early XIX century together and was based on belief in
science as a higher form of knowledge. The main features are determinisms, which assume that
criminal behaviour can be conditioned by certain factors, not controlled by man. Second is
individualism, specifically oriented on offender, not on criminal act itself. In contrary to classic
theory, positivism believes that crimecommitted by human is not the result of decision making (free
will), but combination of different factors, like biology, psychology and sociology. Positivist had
significant part in changing Criminal Justice System, they encouraged validity of treatment and
reformations programs as way of improvement. The major influence on biological positivism had
English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809 82) and his publications On the Orgin of Species (1859),
which enclose theory of human evolution. According to Darwin, humans come from animals and
as them are subject to laws of nature rather than free will Burke, (2009, p.63). The worth
mentioning here is atavism the nation that some individuals are born with features of more
primitive forms of humanity...less suited to human civilization; more prone to aggression, with less

Oedipus By William Shakespeare s Oedipus
1.(Question 1) The situation in Thebes is that they have a plague. Oedipus wants to discover the
murderer of Laius in order to end the suffering of his people.
2.(Question 2) Oedipus is a man of action, but he is also a man of temper. Oedipus bullies Tiresias
into answering him. It is at this point that Tiresias reveals that Oedipus has killed the previous king,
Laius. A pattern emerges regarding Oedipus behavior. He has a temper, but is also used to having
his way. At one point Oedipus becomes extremely angry and accuses Tiresias of acting in collusion
with his brother in law, Creon, to take the throne from Oedipus.
3.(Question 3) Oedipus doesn t accept the story because he has already accused Tiresias of being
personally disloyal, stubborn, unpatriotic, and disrespectful to Thebes and that he is partly
responsible for the death of Laius. Tiresias has several times accused Oedipus of having an
uncontrollable temper. This temper may help explain why Oedipus rejects Tiresias s revelations
about Oedipus himself.
4.(Question 6) Oedipus begins to think that he is the murderer when he learns the location of the
crime scene. Tiresias tells Oedipus that he is the murderer, the cause of all the suffering in Thebes.
Tiresias half explains that Oedipus has done more evil than he can even imagine. Jocasta then tells

is what keeps drawing people back every day to their televisions to watch these shows?
Viewers unfamiliar with the genre might think that they are all the same; however, the
personalities and various style of judging is what makes each stand out from the other. Judge
Judy is known for her no non sense style of rulings, while Judge Marilyn Milian (The People s

Portrayal Of Women In Hamlet
Women are truly the backbones of society. They continue to bloom and flourish, helping to
further grow and expand communities and the world, but are often cast to the shadows because
of stereotypes placed on them dating from centuries ago. It is no secret that Shakespearean plays
set basis for these stereotypes, but because of the world views on women s rights in Shakespeare
s time, his female characters were allowed to break free from the confines of society. In
Shakespeare s most famous play, Hamlet, the two leading ladies, Ophelia and Gertrude, break free
from the standard by showcasing various acts of defiance, choosing their own paths and

Although it may not be clear to the naked eye, the women in Hamlet display certain acts of

of obedience and wit through two separate scenes. She first portrays these rebellious characteristics
when she first tells her father of the relationship she has with Hamlet. Many people would argue
that this does not show any of Ophelia s stray from the norm and some may argue that this scene

In 1994 the country of Rwanda experienced genocide that killed thousands of people. This genocide
was mostly against the Tutsi but also men, women and children of Hutu decent that were found to

not matter their ethnicity, social and economic class, sexual orientation and identity and or marital

Women were more likely to be kept as sexual slaves than men so a lot more survived the

Because a lot of the men were either dead or in prison, women and girls had to make decisions if

Variola rex (Smallpox)
Smallpox is a virus that was first founded in ancient times. The virus?s proper name is Variola rex,
and it has various different forms as well as various symptoms. Among these forms are typical
smallpox, hemorrhagic smallpox, and malignant smallpox, all of which usually always cause death
in their victims. Some of the typical symptoms of smallpox include red vesicles and pustules all
over, bleeding from all orifices of the body, swelling in the face, throat, and eyes, difficulty eating
and swallowing, delirium, malaise, deterioration of the bone marrow, lymph nodes and mucus

In the introductory stages of the rash the small bumps are filled with a clear fluid and are known
as vesicles, but as the virus progresses the vesicles become hard and scab over. The fluid inside
the vesicles turns into puss and the large bumps then become known as pustules. The rash
becomes fully developed between 12 and 14 days after the symptoms of the disease appear. As the
disease follows its course, symptoms become more and more severe and uncomfortable for the
patient. Red spots on the patient begin to turn black, while others turn white, the individual
experiences strong delirium, hemorrhages of blood at the anus, mouth, and nose, raw flesh from the
stripping of the skin, and fistulous ulcers in the ligaments, body, limbs, and joints. Smallpox is also
associated with the unbelievable amount of swelling and protuberance in the throat and eyes, which
obstruct vision as well as the ability to swallow and perform similar functions. The virus also
causes the rotting of the ligaments and bones.
Because the smallpox virus attacks the mucus membranes, bone marrow, and lymph nodes of the
body, most patients obtain the gruesome disfigurement of the face and nose and limbs.( Bollet
1987). The previous stage of the smallpox infection is known as the second stage, which is most

of the work is derived from the fact that Pollan is willing and able as an individual, on a very

Westward Expansion and the American Dream
The experiences a nation undergoes often shape its national identity and define who they are as a
country. Throughout the course of its history, America has developed a national identity which is
the American Dream. The American Dream is defined as the qualities that make up America and
most of its people they include; opportunity, success, determination, and ingenuity. Many events in
American s history highlight the idea of the American dream between the period of its creation and
the 1900 s, but few have succeeded to exhibit all the qualities that make up this idea. One specific

This event soon came to be known as the California Gold Rush. The 49ers of the California Gold
Rush can be known as major exercisers of the American Dream by highlighting success and
determination. The event itself best displays the quality of opportunity.
Many of the people were taking an enormous risk by selling their farms and houses and leaving in
search of something that they could never obtain. These people all had the common goal of seizing
the opportunity to become rich and lead a better life. According to Ronald James writer for the
Nevada Encyclopedia,
For most, the idea of striking it rich by discovering a valuable claim yielded to the ambition of
earning a good wage and, if the opportunity presented itself, of raising a family in a wholesome
community. Many still dreamt of sudden wealth, and gambling with stocks became the most
common outlet for this hope.
James demonstrates how the 49ers seized the opportunity to strike it rich in hopes of leading a
healthy and opulent life. The 49ers mused on the small chance they had to strike it rich that served
as a major component that piloted their determination. This highlights the American Dream because
the 49ers of the California gold rush used determination to obtain the opportunity they had sought
out for. Those who came to the new land were willing to live off of almost nothing on a day to day

Example Of Moral Philosophy
Moral Philosophy is the rational study of the meaning and justification of moral claims. A moral
claim evaluates the rightness or wrongness of an action or a person s character . For example,
stealing is wrong claims that the act of stealing is wrong, while people should not be dishonest
claims a character trait (i.e. dishonesty) is wrong (Gert and Gert).
Descriptively, morality refers to certain codes of conduct put forward by a society or a group (such

code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be put forward by all rational persons. (

from history.com describes the Columbine incident by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. They killed
twelve students and a teacher with semiautomatic guns. Then when the SWAT team arrived at the
school at around 3:00 PM, the dead bodies of the gunmen were found in the school. The gunmen
committed suicide at around noon and twenty three injured students were evacuated out of the
school and into the hospital. Following the incident, an investigation was done on the motives of
the shooters. It was suspected that the gunmen primarily targeted athletes, minorities and
Christians. It was reported that a student Cassie Bernall was shot to death because she said she
believed in god when asked by one of the gunmen. However, it was later determined that the
shooters randomly chose their targets and had intended on bombing the cafeteria to potentially take

Essay about Scene Analysis of David Lynch s Film, Blue Velvet
Blue Velvet: Scene Analysis
The opening scene in David Lynch s Blue Velvet portrays the theme of the entire film. During this
sequence he uses a pattern of showing the audience pleasant images, and then disturbing images to
contrast the two.
The first shot of the roses over the picket fence and the title track Blue Velvet establishes the setting
(Lumberton) as a typical suburban town. The camera starts on a bright blue sky with birds chirping
and flying by and then tilts down to bright red roses over a bright white fence (red, white and blue
symbolizes the American dream maybe?). Both the visual and audible aspects of this shot gives a
pleasant feeling of safety and serenity.
The next shot is of a bright red fire truck slowly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next shot is an establishing shot of a house in the neighborhood. It cuts to a man watering
his lawn with a hose and then to a woman inside watching a crime film (ironic that crime is a
theme of this film) on the television and drinking coffee. It cuts back to the man outside and to
the spigot and snake like hose. The hose is leaking and the man struggles to untangle the hose
from the branch. It cuts back and forth between the hose and branch and then back to the man as
he grabs his neck and collapses to the ground. As he lays there having a stroke (maybe?) on the
ground with the hose in his hand, a dog playfully bites the stream and a baby eating a popsicle
walks up. It zooms in on the dog twice and the frame rate is lowered. This in a way symbolizes
how ignorance is bliss. The dog and the baby have no idea what has happened to the man, just like
the people in the town have no idea what happens behind closed doors.
After the dog it cuts to a close up of the grass in begins to zoom in, closer and closer. The score
becomes non existent and the churning noise begins and becomes louder as the grass gets closer.
The camera moves through the grass and the disturbing sound of bones breaking becomes
prominent. The lighting becomes darker and darker and the beetles are revealed. The beetles are
shot with very low key lighting

Improving An Employee s Stress Level Is Through Supervision
Alternatively, one of the most common methods used to manage an employee s stress level is
through supervision. As previously stated, social workers who work within the child welfare
system can use daily debriefing based on the critical incidents that occur with this population.
For example, from personal experience of being a supervisor over case managers working with
children, supervision was crucial not only for myself but for the caseworkers. The caseworkers
were able to release their emotions, concerns, and possible fears when dealing with their clients
and their family. Huss (2012) shows how employees use supervision to cope and discuss stressful
situations, however, it is explained how supervision is beginning to suddenly decrease. Huss
(2012) describes how supervision is beginning to decrease, which can be due to the possible lack
of supervisory positions or funding. This is an example of why the current practices, i.e. EPA,
supervision, and OD, need to change within organizations. Based on personal experience, in order
to help manage an employees stress, an organization needs to ensure that their staff has the tools
needed to work efficiently and effectively. Organizations must be aware of the stress that can be
caused by the policies, regulations and conflicting demands of the external and internal factors that
influence an employee s work (Dextras Gautier, Marchand, Haines, 2012). Furthermore,
organizational SMIs encompass the leadership of administration,

Essay Comparing A Streetcar Named Desire And Long Day s...
A Streetcar Named Desire and Long Day s Journey into Night possess many similarities as well
different features. The first and most obvious difference is that A Streetcar Named Desire is a
motion picture, while Long Day s Journey into Night is a manuscript. The reason I mentioned
this fact is because with the motion picture you are capable of seeing the emotions, witnessing
the violence; although action can always be misconstrued. Long Day s Journey into Night you
have to read the emotions, and make assumptions instead of experiencing them personally;
however they are clear and direct. Blanche and Mary have similar bad nerves to each other;
although I would like to say it is due to their addictions. Mary is a morphine addict who attempts
to hide it from her family because she would like them to believe she is still in... Show more content

Mary lies about her morphine abuse because she have not quite come to terms that she once
again is abusing morphine herself. Unlike, Blanche she is not creating a new reality to escape
her former one, she just have not fully grasp the fact she did not kicked the addiction yet. Now,
in the terms of husbands James was an actor who is financially responsible, even though he is
not to please with Mary actions all the time he is nothing more than a loving husband, who I
could not imagine that would lift a finger to harm Mary or any of her family members. Stella s
husband Stanley, gambles with his friends and caused harm her when she was defending her
sister, clearly he does not love Stella the same way James love Mary. Edmund went to the
sanatorium because he had the case of consumption and it was the cheapest option to help him get
better. However, Blanche was sent to a mental facility because she mentally broke down due to the
circumstances of financial problems, alcoholism and of course the

Advertisement Is Not A Recent Human Attempt
Advertisement is not a recent human attempt; it existed throughout the revolutions of humankind.
In ancient civilizations, stone carving, wall printing, and oral noticing were the most common
form of advertising. Egyptian Pharaohs used carved iron plates for public notices.
Archaeologists in Thebes, Egypt discovered a 3000 year old public advertisement that offered a
reward for runaway slave. Old Greeks employed wall paintings for theater play ads, and papyrus
sheets to advertise lost and found items. Romans in the first century A.D, used oral announcements
to publicize the arrival of caravan supplies. Also, according to archaeological discovery in
Pompeii, Italy, Romans employed written ads to promote property rentals (1). However,
advertisement as a profitable industry did not start till the influx of mass media like printing, radio,
and television emerged. By the invention of big plasma cable TVs equipped with child oriented
programs, and the Internet, commercial ads that target children grew ubiquitously unlimited.
Though some advertisements can be supportive, fast food advertisements that target children
should be prohibited as they cause unhealthy habit to children and induce parent child conflicts.
Foremost fast food advertisers employ several strategies to influence children. First fast food
advertisers use cartoon images embodied with brand to make their product more attractive to
children. For example, McDonalds in 1990 run a commercial ad of Fry Kids (2) to

What do you know about Mexico city? In this short essay I m going to show you how big
Mexico City is and how beautiful mexico city can be. In my opinion Mexico City is very
beautiful and there is much to learn. Did you know that the biggest building in mexico city is 807
ft tall? The building s name is the Torre Reforma. Well, you learned something new. In this essay I
hope you learn more about Mexico City and you become more interested in Mexico City.
Some of the reasons why I think that people should learn more about this topic is there is many
things to learn about and most people don t know much about it. Most probably don t know that
mexico city has over 1,121 museums just in Mexico City. In my opinion most people probably don
t know that. When people start hearing or reading cool facts about Mexico City I would think they
would want to know more. Another big reason that people should learn about Mexico City more is
because wouldn t it be nice to learn about another city and culture. When most people learn about
something I feel like you would want to learn about another culture. Those were some of the
reasons why you should learn about Mexico city. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

trouble. Curfews establish a structure for teens, most crimes happen at night when nobody is
around. Criminal activity or high risk activity is more likely to occur later in the evening when
parental supervision is not there. Having a curfewseems unfair but what many teenagers fail to
realize is that curfews are beneficial to their overall well being. A study shows that states that have

Essay On Gender Inequality
Amnesty International
5 Penn Plaza, 16th Floor
New York, NY 1001
Dear Advocacy Representative, As many of us know throughout history there have been many
inequalities that the world has been faced with; whether it is race, gender, or ethnic background. I
am writing you, the representatives for Equal Rights to discuss an urgent concern of American
women in the workplace. Although gender inequality is decreasing, it still exists and makes a lot of
people suffer its consequences every day. Gender inequality is unfair rights between male and
female based on different gender roles which leads to unequal treatment. Gender inequality has been
widely known in human history but not until the beginning of the 20th century has the change of ...

This historic rise came about in 2005 and, since then, the pay gap has remained roughly
unchanged. Women as a whole experience the gender pay gap but there is also a racial pay gap. A
woman makes 77 cents for every dollar a Caucasian man makes.
Last year when looking at median hourly pay, black workers earned $18.49 an hour. White
workers earned an average of $25.22 an hour. Caucasian women make about 75 cents to every
dollar a caucasian man makes. Asian women make an average of 85 cents to every dollar a
caucasian man makes. For black, Latina, and Native women, that number is significantly lower.
On average, Latina and black women who are low wage earners and work full time live below the
poverty line. White men who are low wage earners and work full time live above the poverty line.
According to the map from National Women s Law Center women lose $418,800 over a 40 year
career. That number is more than double from latina and black women. It will take years for the
gap to be resolved. In the U.S the gender wage gap is lower than it is in any country although there
has not being improvements since the 1990s. However, the contribution of men to household and
childcare has grown significantly in recent years, it is still far below women s contributions.
In today s society, women make up almost half of the workforce; in four out of ten families,
women are the equal, if not main, breadwinners as

The Current State of the U.S. Economy Essay
The Current State of the U.S. Economy
The United States economy is racing ahead at dangerous speeds, and it may be too late to prevent
the return of widespread inflation. Ideally the economy should move ahead gradually and grow at
a steady manageable rate. Mae West once stated Too much of a good thing can be wonderful and it
seems the U.S. Treasury Secretary agrees. The Secretary announced that due to our increasing
surplus and booming economy, instead of having an outsized tax cut, we should use the surplus to
further pay down the national debt. A tax cut, though most Americans would favor it initially,
would prove counter productive. Cutting taxes would over stimulate an already raging economy,
and enhance the possibilities of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The federal reserve has raised interest rates five times in less then twelve months, and the
pervious raises are just barely beginning to take effect. The previous raises averaged around a
quarter percentage point, and since these raises failed to slow the economy, Greenspan, unable to
take anymore chances doubled the previous with a promise of more to come. The interest rates
are expected to reach 7.0% by June, the most severally effected by these constant raises are
shareholders. Because of these immediate effects market economists are largely against the
interest rate hikes. Their position is that the average inflation rate over the past three years has
been at around 2% close to the markets expected inflation rate of 1.9%. The economy is on a
sixteen year run, continually moving forward. The historical data is there however; the consumer
price index was at 1.6% over the past twelve months and the March year over year rate was at 3.7%
The market economists do not stop there due to the vast improvements in productivity, largely due
to increased technology and the internet, some market economists argue that Greenspan should
leave the economy as is. Ideally the growth rate of the economy should be set by the growth rate of
the labor force and productivity, and if the two were similar, inflation would not be a factor. The
economy

Hemingway s Big Two-Hearted River
When reading Hemingway s short story Big Two Hearted River without proper knowledge and
context of Nick Adam s story after Indian Camp, various questions arise about Nick s motivations
for going out into the woods, heading to the swamp, and his psychological state. In this paper, I
intend to analyze Nick s motivations and psychological state before and during Big Two Hearted
Riverin reference to the question of whether or not this story can stand on its own and the effect
of the caesarian delivery and war in Fossalta on Nick s psyche. I believe this story cannot stand
on its own because it is the last story in Hemingway s series about Nick Adams. By writing Big
Two Hearted River as its last story, Hemingway intended that it be... Show more content on

Without the prior knowledge of the effect of Indian Camp on Nick s psyche, one could easily
declare the events and his thoughts in Big Two Hearted River as normal, per the passage of time
and his assumed maturity. But, as certain imagery that evokes war in Big Two Hearted River
suggests, Nick also suppressed the events of Fossalta. The first scene in this story has him
walking through the fire destroyed town of Seney (Hemingway 209). He is carrying a pack and
a fishing rod just as a soldier would wear a pack and carry a gun, and, as he was a soldier, it can
be inferred that he saw similar scenes of destruction before (210). Phrases evoking war were also
used by the narrator, such as when Nick left the burned town behind in the heat, as if the town
was in the heat of battle with gunfire (210). Likewise, the imagery of the blackened grasshoppers
also evokes war. Nick realize[s] that they had all turned black from living in the burned over
land, (the same land that is similar to scenes of war) just as he was psychologically blackened by
the war because of his injuries (212). He also wondered how long they would stay that way,
implying his questioning of when he would recover and hope that he could (Hannum 107,

  • 2. My Little Pony Art Of World War II This soldier s statements carry merit as there were a number of World War 2 military planes adorned with images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck ready for battle. Even in the Brony fandom there exists a large a cache of military inspired My Little Pony art located on websites like DeviantArt portraying ponies militarygarb. There has even been an Air Force squadron which adopted a redesigned My Little Pony logo as their unit patch. Other soldiers defend their position as a Brony by expressing the need for people to have a need to get away from the stresses of life. They feel as though there is a distinction between the service they provide and activities they engage in during duty hours: Even if the main interest in MLP was escapism, all media is essentially escapism, whether it s the rich rapper, the football star, or the action movie hero. Everyone to some extent lives vicariously through the entertainment they consume. At least this show let s [sic] the audience escape to a world where integrity, loyalty, and kindness is exalted, rather than violence, cynicism, and overt sexuality. Part of what this soldier sees in Schlicter s argument is the interpretation of the off duty hours activities. Engaging in a media text like My Little Pony does not take away from the job they do. It is simply a portion of their life that only appears contradictory because it competes with the image of military soldier presented in mainstream media and this soldier feels the message ... Chronic illnesses go untreated, emergencies are ignored, and patients with serious illnesses fail to receive needed care. A small failure to medical care can turn in to death of an inmate if left untreated. Prisoners are humans whether inmates or not, with normal health issues or diseases. Even a common cold is an example of an illness that needs treatment. A lot with what is wrong with the health care system today, in the United States deals with money. Within prisons, it is an entire different story. The mission of medical care is to diagnose, comfort and cure. These goals are not being achieved within the prisonsystem. Care needs to be given to every inmate, even the most despised and violent one among them all. Prisoners who had healthcare before becoming incarcerated may have that ignored or taken away from them. Beginning in the early 1800 s steam powered engines and other mechanical devices began to be used in agriculture and farming. John Froehlich helped make permanent changes to farming with his invention of the traction engine . John Froelich was born in 1849 in Iowa and attended school in Galena, Illinois, and in Iowa. While in college he became interested in engineering, and farming and agriculture. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike animals and people, tractors did not get tired, although they did breakdown frequently and their moving parts were dangerous. Because tractors were much stronger than horses, machines which had been powered by horses could now be more easily powered with tractors. Many improvements have been made on the tractor since the model John Froelich invented in 1892. The first tractor had three wheels and was clumsy to move. Eventually tractors would be made with four wheels which made them easier to drive and more stable when moving. The invention of the tractor would also lead to the invention of the Caterpillar or crawler which worked much like the tractor except it used tracks instead of wheels. These machines proved especially useful in places like the California which had heavier soil. The invention of the tractor also lead to the invention of powered hydraulics to lift heavy machinery and the power take off allowing the tractor to be used more efficiently as a power source to other machines while the tractor was stationary or moving. • 9. Taking a Look at Impressionism What Impressionism Sought to Achieve By the year 1863 the sentry which allows the visual messages transmitted by the eye to penetrate to the brain only after a rigorous censorship, had admitted most aspects of visual truth, but there were two that had not yet officially passed the censor. They were (1) the colour and vibration of light and (2) the density of air. No one had ever painted the true colour of sunshine and shadow, and hardly anyone had thought it worthwhile to suggest that the density of the air is not always constant, that a picture could be painted, for instance, of a landscape seen through a heavy mist or fog. But both these visual discoveries were, fundamentally, subheadings of a larger discovery. What the Impressionists did, almost without knowing it, was to realize the phenomenon of transitoriness. The artist who carries his canvas out into the open air and attempts to record every nuance of what his eye sees is in a very different frame of mind from the artist who constructs his picture in his studio from a series of preparatory sketches or studies. His eye may not be more searching but it becomes conscious of a different set of visual data. He becomes less and less concerned with the nature of the object figure or landscape he happens to be painting, and more and more conscious of the appearance of the object at a particular moment of time. For Monet, at work on a picture of Rouen Cathedral, what his eyes encountered was not a Gothic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Comparing The Iliad And The Odyssey This short essay will identify five traditional epic characteristics that are evident in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The first epic characteristic evident in both epics is catalogs and genealogies. For instance, Book VIII of the Odyssey features a list of participants in the game (115 125) and the Iliad Book II features a catalog of ships (484 759). Secondly, both epics start in media res. The Odysseystarts ten years after the Trojan Warand the Illiad starts nine years after the start of the war. Thirdly, the Muses are prayed to for inspiration to tell the story, which can be observed in the Iliad Book I (1 9) and in the Odyssey Book I (1 31). Fourthly, the main characters also give long formal speeches. For instance, in Book XI of the Iliad, Hector rallies his men with a long speech after Agamemnon is carried off the field (248 291). Similarly, there are extended speeches between Telemachus and the suitors, which compile Book II of the Odyssey. Finally, there is intervention of gods or machinery in both epics. For Odysseus , Poseidon s divine intervention kept him from returning home for several years. Similarly, one of many examples of divine intervention exists fairly in the beginning of the Iliad, when Apollo responds to Chryses appeal to strike the Greek armies with plague. In conclusion, five traditional epic characteristics that are evident in both the Iliad and the Odyssey have been identified in the paragraphs above. 2. Scholars claim Homeric ... She ruled England for forty four years with a commitment to preserve peace and strength. Her time as Queen, would come to be known as the Elizabethan Era or the Golden Age. Born on the seventh of September 1533 to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth was a healthy and happy baby, however, she was to only spend three years with her birth mother, who would be executed in 1536 for false charges made by King Henry VIII of incest, adultery, witchcraft, and conspiracy against the king. Elizabeth refused to have her executed, but after Mary s role in the Babington Plot was revealed, she made the decision to send her to her death. Elizabeth found her final years as queen difficult. Ministers would often make decisions without consulting her first; she was loosing her grip on power. She was in Richmond Palace when her health started to fail and died in the early hours of March 24th, 1603, making her the oldest monarch to rule England at that time, proving to England that women can do some extraordinary things, just as well as men can. Elizabeth was never married and had no children to take on the throne so King James of Scotland took over the throne. Elizabeth left England peaceful, strong, rich, powerful, and with a majority transferring to protestant, but her greatest achievement was the relationships she forged with her subjects. Knowing that I am going to go to college in just two years I have the pressure to get involved in the community and as expected my most listened to radio station decided to play. I was shocked and surprised, as many people, that there was no physical outcome from what I was getting myself into, but I stepped outside of my comfort zone and played a different radio station. This type of method is appropriate for the study because it gives accurate data about student s abilities before the start of the research study. It is also used at the end of the study for the scores can be compared between each class and initial scores. Instruments First off, the students would take a progress monitoring test. The test would be a reading progress monitoring test to determine where the students are at before the research experiment and again at the end of the experiment. The test is called R CBM. The R CBM is a one minute test that requires the student to read aloud. The test consists of three passages. The student will read three one minute passages and the median score is taken. Based on the students reading level, and grade level is how the teacher will know what the student will read. Special education teachers are given district progress monitoring binders that contain different passages for reading levels and grade levels. The type of data would be interval data. • 15. Fermentation Of Yeast Lab Report The objective of this study is to show the process of fermentation of yeast and the cellular respiration rate that is found in the mitochondria. The first part of the experiment tested fermentation of yeast through the production of CO2 under certain circumstances. Four different food sources were used: glucose, sucrose, starch, and H2O. The temperature varied from 37oC to 4oC and measured on a 5 minute interval. We predicted that the glucose on the highest temperature would produce the most CO2 bubbles. In the alcohol fermentation process glucose is initially used, we predicted that the increase in glucose would produce the most CO2. The second part of the experiment, cellular respirationwas measured from mitochondria found in isolated lima beans. This was done to examine the citric acid cycle that takes place in the mitochondria. Within the citric acid cycle, succinate must be converted to fumarate. • 17. Theme Of Revelation By Flannery O Connor Flannery O Connor was a Southern Gothic writer who grew up in Georgia in the mid 20th century. She is known for her short stories and admired for reflecting her background along with her religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic into her writing. She was affected by lupus at age 26 and only lived for another 13 years afterwards. Her later stories more heavily reflected her beliefs and her faith, one of which being Revelation, published the year she died in 1964. It is about a stereotypical southern woman, Mrs. Turpin, who identifies others by their social class and is caught off guard when a young educated daughter can no longer ignore her bigotry and attacks her with a textbook. The first of which is the dramatic irony of O Connor giving the reader insight into the two sides of the main character. She sees herself as a, respectable, hard working, church going woman, and as the reader we are able to see a very different side (194). This contrast gives the reader their first insight into the theme of self image. Later on in the waiting room when Mary Grace hurls the book across the room, we see the theme develop through more irony. The book was titled Human Development, exactly what Mrs. Turpin needed to develop spiritually. At home, when in bed with Claud, we see the first instance in which she worries about what others think about her as a consequence of her actions. She wanted to tell him... she did not wish to put the image of herself as a wart hog from hell into his mind (194 195). It s ironic because as her husband, he should be someone she can come to with problems, but instead, she takes them to the farm help, which just makes her feel worse and further frustrates her. The last and most significant piece of irony that finalizes Mrs. Turpin s transformation comes in her religious image at the end of the story. Those that she categorized at, the bottom of the heap, were transcending into heaven before herself and her husband (181). This is the ultimate wake up call for her and her understanding of God, judgment, and self perception. This development of irony happens parallel to Mrs. Turpin s developing self perception and judgmental behavior. The irony within the religious image seen at the end, further clears up her faith and spiritual understanding to restore her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He relates each simile back to the first line of the poem, What happens to a dream deferred? The first simile Hughes writes is in line three, Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun. One may picture a grape, once succulent and full of life, now shriveled up and lifeless. For instance, Pilgrim is walking through the horribly cold, bleak and depressing German landscape with The Three Musketeers and ends up being dragged by Weary most of the way. In 1965 organized labor was a close second to big government. Labor received 29% to big governments 35%. Organized labor as a threat steadily declined and by 1999 only 8% of the people viewed it as the biggest threat behind big business at 24% and big government at 65%. In contrary to classic theory, positivism believes that crimecommitted by human is not the result of decision making (free will), but combination of different factors, like biology, psychology and sociology. Smallpox is also associated with the unbelievable amount of swelling and protuberance in the throat and eyes, which obstruct vision as well as the ability to swallow and perform similar functions. The virus also causes the rotting of the ligaments and bones. Because the smallpox virus attacks the mucus membranes, bone marrow, and lymph nodes of the body, most patients obtain the gruesome disfigurement of the face and nose and limbs.( Bollet 1987). The previous stage of the smallpox infection is known as the second stage, which is most commonly and not surprisingly a phase at which most individuals do not survive. Those that do ... Michael Pollan Omnivore Dilemma Michael Pollan in 2006, published a work that has to some degree changed the way that people eat, or at the very least attempted to change the way that we think about the food we eat. (Shea 54) Pollan demonstrates through fundamentally modern rhetoric the relationship that people, and more specifically American s have with foodand how very distant we are from it. ( History, Old Favorites in B08) To some degree Pollan, others like him and internationally challenging food shortages and even worse food born illnesses and scares are changing the way that food is understood with regard to an international and national food traceability and accountability movement. The ethos of the work is derived from the fact that Pollan is willing and able as an individual, on a very intimate level to trace all these links to a formidable conclusion, as well as his own credential as a consumer and a food writer. (Shea 54) He vividly describes his experiences and what he has learned, so the reader can participate in his exploration of the many worlds of food in the United States. But that s just the beginning. In addition to dairy products from corn fed cows and eggs from corn fed chickens, corn starch, corn oil and corn syrup make up key ingredients in prepared foods. Throughout the course of its history, America has developed a national identity which is the American Dream. The American Dream is defined as the qualities that make up America and most of its people they include; opportunity, success, determination, and ingenuity. Many events in American s history highlight the idea of the American dream between the period of its creation and the 1900 s, but few have succeeded to exhibit all the qualities that make up this idea. The 49ers of the California Gold Rush can be known as major exercisers of the American Dream by highlighting success and determination. The event itself best displays the quality of opportunity. Many of the people were taking an enormous risk by selling their farms and houses and leaving in search of something that they could never obtain. These people all had the common goal of seizing the opportunity to become rich and lead a better life. According to Ronald James writer for the Nevada Encyclopedia, For most, the idea of striking it rich by discovering a valuable claim yielded to the ambition of earning a good wage and, if the opportunity presented itself, of raising a family in a wholesome community. Many still dreamt of sudden wealth, and gambling with stocks became the most common outlet for this hope. James demonstrates how the 49ers seized the opportunity to strike it rich in hopes of leading a healthy and opulent life. The 49ers mused on the small chance they had to strike it rich that served as a major component that piloted their determination. This highlights the American Dream because the 49ers of the California gold rush used determination to obtain the opportunity they had sought out for. They were cheerful, aggressive dark figures (lines 16 and 17). History.com, A E Television Networks, 2009, www.history.com/topics/columbine high school shootings. 27 November 2017 The source from history.com describes the Columbine incident by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. They killed twelve students and a teacher with semiautomatic guns. Then when the SWAT team arrived at the school at around 3:00 PM, the dead bodies of the gunmen were found in the school. The gunmen committed suicide at around noon and twenty three injured students were evacuated out of the school and into the hospital. Following the incident, an investigation was done on the motives of the shooters. It was suspected that the gunmen primarily targeted athletes, minorities and Christians. It was reported that a student Cassie Bernall was shot to death because she said she believed in god when asked by one of the gunmen. However, it was later determined that the shooters randomly chose their targets and had intended on bombing the cafeteria to potentially take hundreds of lives. Thankfully, the bombs never went off. It was discovered the Klebold and Harris regularly played DOOM, which was the most violent video gameat the time. The debate on whether video games influenced the individuals who performed these horrendous acts kick started with the Columbine massacre. During this sequence he uses a pattern of showing the audience pleasant images, and then disturbing images to contrast the two. The first shot of the roses over the picket fence and the title track Blue Velvet establishes the setting (Lumberton) as a typical suburban town. The camera starts on a bright blue sky with birds chirping and flying by and then tilts down to bright red roses over a bright white fence (red, white and blue symbolizes the American dream maybe?). It cuts to a man watering his lawn with a hose and then to a woman inside watching a crime film (ironic that crime is a theme of this film) on the television and drinking coffee. It cuts back to the man outside and to the spigot and snake like hose. The hose is leaking and the man struggles to untangle the hose from the branch. It cuts back and forth between the hose and branch and then back to the man as he grabs his neck and collapses to the ground. As he lays there having a stroke (maybe?) on the ground with the hose in his hand, a dog playfully bites the stream and a baby eating a popsicle walks up. It zooms in on the dog twice and the frame rate is lowered. This in a way symbolizes how ignorance is bliss. The dog and the baby have no idea what has happened to the man, just like the people in the town have no idea what happens behind closed doors. After the dog it cuts to a close up of the grass in begins to zoom in, closer and closer. The score becomes non existent and the churning noise begins and becomes louder as the grass gets closer. The camera moves through the grass and the disturbing sound of bones breaking becomes prominent. The lighting becomes darker and darker and the beetles are revealed. • 44. Improving An Employee s Stress Level Is Through Supervision Alternatively, one of the most common methods used to manage an employee s stress level is through supervision. As previously stated, social workers who work within the child welfare system can use daily debriefing based on the critical incidents that occur with this population. For example, from personal experience of being a supervisor over case managers working with children, supervision was crucial not only for myself but for the caseworkers. The caseworkers were able to release their emotions, concerns, and possible fears when dealing with their clients and their family. Huss (2012) shows how employees use supervision to cope and discuss stressful situations, however, it is explained how supervision is beginning to suddenly decrease. Huss (2012) describes how supervision is beginning to decrease, which can be due to the possible lack of supervisory positions or funding. This is an example of why the current practices, i.e. EPA, supervision, and OD, need to change within organizations. Based on personal experience, in order to help manage an employees stress, an organization needs to ensure that their staff has the tools needed to work efficiently and effectively. Organizations must be aware of the stress that can be caused by the policies, regulations and conflicting demands of the external and internal factors that influence an employee s work (Dextras Gautier, Marchand, Haines, 2012). The reason I mentioned this fact is because with the motion picture you are capable of seeing the emotions, witnessing the violence; although action can always be misconstrued. In ancient civilizations, stone carving, wall printing, and oral noticing were the most common form of advertising. Egyptian Pharaohs used carved iron plates for public notices. Archaeologists in Thebes, Egypt discovered a 3000 year old public advertisement that offered a reward for runaway slave. Old Greeks employed wall paintings for theater play ads, and papyrus sheets to advertise lost and found items. Romans in the first century A.D, used oral announcements to publicize the arrival of caravan supplies. Also, according to archaeological discovery in Pompeii, Italy, Romans employed written ads to promote property rentals (1). However, advertisement as a profitable industry did not start till the influx of mass media like printing, radio, and television emerged. By the invention of big plasma cable TVs equipped with child oriented programs, and the Internet, commercial ads that target children grew ubiquitously unlimited. Though some advertisements can be supportive, fast food advertisements that target children should be prohibited as they cause unhealthy habit to children and induce parent child conflicts. Foremost fast food advertisers employ several strategies to influence children. First fast food advertisers use cartoon images embodied with brand to make their product more attractive to children. The Secretary announced that due to our increasing surplus and booming economy, instead of having an outsized tax cut, we should use the surplus to further pay down the national debt. The interest rates are expected to reach 7.0% by June, the most severally effected by these constant raises are shareholders. But, as certain imagery that evokes war in Big Two Hearted River suggests, Nick also suppressed the events of Fossalta. The first scene in this story has him walking through the fire destroyed town of Seney (Hemingway 209). He is carrying a pack and a fishing rod just as a soldier would wear a pack and carry a gun, and, as he was a soldier, it can be inferred that he saw similar scenes of destruction before (210). Phrases evoking war were also used by the narrator, such as when Nick left the burned town behind in the heat, as if the town was in the heat of battle with gunfire (210). Likewise, the imagery of the blackened grasshoppers also evokes war.
