Hygiene is defined as the science of health and includes all factors contributing to healthful living. There are several types of hygiene including social hygiene, which controls environmental factors impacting well-being; industrial/occupational hygiene which prevents illness from work; and school hygiene which promotes optimal health for students. Personal hygiene involves principles of physical and mental cleanliness and health. Factors influencing hygiene practices include personal preferences, social and peer influences, socioeconomic status, health beliefs and motivation, cultural beliefs, and physical conditions. Personal hygiene aims to prevent illness, promote good health, maintain quality of life, and improve mental, social, and spiritual well-being.
