Definition of Health:
•The word, ‘health is derived from the old English word ‘hoelth’ which
means a stage of being sound, and was generally used to infer a
soundness of the body.
• Health is ‘absence of disease’
• health is the level of functional and metabolic efficacy of a living
beings,
• in human it is the general condition of the person in mind, body and
spirit, usually meaning to being free from illness, injury or pain.
According to WHO:
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity

1) Physical health:
it implies perfect functioning of the body
* Energetic, has good posture, weighs normal for age, and height,
has all body organs functioning normally, has bright eyes, has
good texture and shining hair, good sound sleep, has good
appetite, has a clean breath.
* A person is physically healthy.
* if he/she looks alert and responsive

2) Mental Health:
• Mental health is not mere absence of mental illness. A
Mentally healthy person is one who is free from internal
conflict.
• Control on emotions.
• Sensitive to need of others.
• Confidence in one’s own abilities.
• A person is mentally healthy if he or she is relaxed and free
from worries.
3) Social well-being:
* It implies harmony and integration with in the individual
between each individual and other member of the society
and between individuals and the world in which they live.
•Has pleasant manners,
•Fulfill responsibility toward others,
• get along well with people around,

Spiritual:
*A person is said to be spiritually healthy when he possesses sound mind in a
sound body.
•Something transcends Physiology and Psychology.
Emotional
A person is said to be emotionally healthy when he dose not loose temper or
does not develop tension and should have self control.
Vocational:
Capable of earning sufficiently to lead the life successfully.
Positive health:
*A person who is healthy physically, Mentally, and Socially and Spiritually is
said to be in a state of “Positive Health” i.e Highest standard of health.

HYGIENE
• The word Hygiene, is derived from ‘Hygeia’ The Goodness of health,
cleanliness and sanitation. In Greek mythology, she is represented as a
beautiful women holding a bowl in her hand from which a serpent is
drinking. The serpent testifies the art of healing which symbol is retained
even today.
• Hygiene is defined as the science of health and embraces all factors,
which contributes to healthful living. It refers to conditions and practices
that help in maintaining good health and in preventing the spread of the
disease.
•As hygiene and health go hand in hand and are interrelated so it become
vital to be careful about hygiene to keep ourselves to free from disease.
There are various terms used in context with the public health.

What is Personal hygiene?
* Personal hygiene may be described as the principle of maintaining
cleanliness and grooming of the external body.

Sleep hygiene:
Sleep hygiene is the term used to describe good sleep habit.
*keep a consent sleep schedule.
*create a relaxing bedtime routine.
*Exercise regularly.
*Make your sleep environment work for you.
*Limit-napping –or avoid it if you can.
*Limit your caffeine intake.
*Avoid Alcohol and smoking. Eat right, Use a sleep diary.

Dental Hygiene:
*Brushing our teeth regularly.
*visits dentist for regulars checkups and cleanings.
*Eating a healthy diet. i.e, grains, vegetables, and fruits.
*Avoid food that contain lot of sugar, sugar helps plague grow.
*Use of toothpaste that contain fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay and
cavities.
*Avoid chewing tobacco and drinking excessive tea as it can cause
discoloration of the teeth.
*Avoid touching the mouth after touching other material, like keyboards,
Pencil, shoes, and clothes.
Occupational hygiene:
Occupational hygiene is about the prevention of disease caused by work.
Also known as industrial hygiene.

1) Keep your work place clean.
2) Keep your tools, instrument and machinery clean.
3) Keep your office files clean.
4) Never allow dust accumulation.
5) Never shy in cleaning your tables by yourself.
6) Use toilets in proper way.
7) Use more water to avoid smell and stains.
8) Wash your hands and mouth after you use the toilets.
Importance:

Avoidable habits:
Bad habits effect mental, Physical, and social health following are some
bad habits to quit right away:
1) Avoid nail biting as it is unhygienic and leads to dental problem
2) Quite smoking as it cause premature skin ageing, respiratory problems,
lung cancer, yellowing of teeth, and bad breath.
3) Avoid intake of alcohol as it may cause brain problem, cardiomiopathy,
high blood pressure, arrhythmias, stroke, hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis,
cancer etc.
4) Avoid eating junk food.
5) Avoid self medication.
