This document provides an introduction to epidemiology. It defines epidemiology as the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in populations and the application of this study to disease prevention and control. The epidemiological approach is based on asking questions about health events and actions, making comparisons between groups with and without disease exposure to identify differences in host and environmental factors. Disease results from an interaction between an agent, host, and environment factors, known as the epidemiological triad.
