This document discusses permission levels in SharePoint Online. It explains that permission levels define the actions users can take, like creating subsites or deleting content. These levels work with SharePoint groups to assign permissions to sets of users. Sites inherit permissions from their parent site by default. Microsoft provides some default levels that can be customized or new levels can be created. The document also provides information about CloudFronts and their Office 365 managed services.
3. Introduction
After creating SharePoint site, you may want to provide or restrict access
to the site or site contents. For example, you may want to provide access
to everyone, but restrict some from deleting any content.
Permission levels are the actions, a user can define as Create Subsite,
Delete Subsite, View Versions, and many more.
Microsoft already provides a list of default levels but you can also a
create a new one.
4. Permission Level & SPO Groups
Permission levels work together with SharePoint groups. A SharePoint
group is a set of users who all have the same permission level.
By default, each SharePoint site includes certain SharePoint groups and
each SharePoint groups has been assigned a permission level.
Three standard SharePoint groups are – Owners, Visitors & Members.
5. Permission Inheritance
By design, all the sites and site content in a collection inherit the
permissions settings of the root or top-level site. When you assign
unique permissions to sites, libraries, and items, those items no longer
inherit permissions from their parent site.
For Permission Level, to create or make any changes you need to go to
top-level site or root site. Any changes made in the permission level will
be applied throughout the Site Collection.
6. Default Permission Level
By default, MS provides default permission level in SharePoint Online.
Default permission levels allow you to quickly and easily provide
common levels of permissions for one user or groups of users.
You can make changes to any of the default permissions levels,
except Full Control and Limited Access.
7. Permission List
Each Permission level consist of list
of permissions.
Note – It is not recommended to
edit a default permissions level
instead you can create a new one.
For example,
Sometimes you may want that your users’ can
only edit items but not delete anything. So, for
that, you can just go ahead and create a new
permission level. Accordingly you will be able to
choose the list of permissions which you want to
add to that permission level and In this case you
will not select “Delete Items” and will save the
permission level.
