THE ELEMENTS IN THE
PERIODIC TABLE

2. Scientist who arrange the Periodic Table
◦ Johann Dobereiner- German chemist formed the triads of elements
(calcium, barium, strontium)
◦ John Newlands- English chemist who proposed the Law of Octaves
◦ Lothar Meyer- lived and worked in Germany
◦ Dmitri Mendeleev- lived and work in Russia.
Both teacher, arrange the elements in order of increasing
atomic mass while putting in group those with similar properties and left
blank spaces.

3. Groups- identify the principal families
◦ Group 1- alkali metals
◦ Group 2- alkaline earth metals
◦ Group 17- halogens
◦ Group 18- noble gases
◦ Group 13-16- named base on the 1st element found in their
families.
◦ Group 16- Oxygen Group
◦ Group 3-12- Transition elements.
◦ Lanthanides- inner transition elements
◦ Actinides-

4. ◦ Group 1,2 and 13-18- representative elements/ main group
◦ Metals- left side
◦ Nonmetals- right side
◦ Semi-metals- have the appearance and some properties of
metals but behaves like aa non-metal.
◦ Ex. Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium,
Polonium

5. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL
◦ 1. LUSTER- A glow of light from within
◦ 2. MALLEABILITY- capable of being stretched or bent into different shapes
ex. (hammering a metal)
◦ 3. DUCTILITY- capable of being stretched or bent into different shapes as a
result of tensile stress. Ex. (metal drawn into wires)
◦ 4. CONDUCTIVITY- the ability to move heat or electricity from one place to
another: the power to conduct heat or electricity.
REACTIVITY- The ease and speed which a metal reacts with another substance
