Augustus Caesar was the first emperor of Rome who succeeded Julius Caesar. He ended the civil war, brought peace to the empire through establishing a centralized government, and initiated an era known as the Pax Romana. One consequence of Augustus' tax system was that it led Joseph and Mary to travel to Bethlehem for the census, where Jesus was born. Augustus died on August 19, 14 AD, leaving Rome in better condition than when he found it.
